We had a lovely visit - all the railway volunteers/staff were so friendly and helpful. The gentleman who checked us in, recommended we spoke to the conductor to ensure as a large party (7) we were sat together. Nothing was too much trouble, and half a carriage was reserved for us.
The children were given lovely activity books to amuse on the journey, which also gave some history. The carriages were decorated, as was the station and we enjoyed a fruit punch and mince pie on board (collect from the cafe first). It was nice and warm on board, good views and we were invited to jump off to see the engine running around at the short stop.
As the last train of the season, we were gifted extra mince pies and as the launch of the countess appeal, and everyone having the chance to whistle the bell was amazing - a real treat and very interesting to hear the history and plans for the future.
The volunteers were chatty and informative, and engaging with our children.
The gift shop reasonably priced with a good selection of railway based goodies and extras.

The whole experience was magical for the children. Santa and his elves spent a good period of time with the children and engaged them on just the right level. The presents were of good quality - not the usual plastic rubbish.
Train journey just the right length and things to see on the way. Overall, an excellent outing pre Christmas.

Christmas Santa Special.....just one word magical. The volunteers make it a wonderfull experience..this years addition of a young lady singing Carol's was great...well done guys ...what an experience folr a little one.

We had a fantastic visit when we went to the SEN Santa experience. All staff were kind, patient and approachable. We arrived a little early and made use of the cafe facilities. We were warned ahead of time the carriages might be cold but we honestly didn’t notice. We were so engrossed in the trip, views and little extras provided. My son received an excellent present and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience!!

Great family experience and the santa coming round the carriage to speak to children individually was brilliant. Our 3 year old can be shy but having santa come to him it worked wonders. Would highly recommend the santa special for young families. The whole experience was organised very well. We will be returning in the future 🙂

Lovely trip. Santa spent ages with each child. Presents were good quality and nice mince pie and mulled with with gluten free goody bag for granddaughter. Carriages were very cold! All staff very friendly

Absolutely lovely trip on the Santa special, with our Grandaughter, we all enjoyed it very much, lovely views on the trip, and all volunteers very friendly. Santa chatted and gave out lovely presents to all children. Highly recommended

The views during the journey are beautiful. Personal visit of Santa with his helper in every Carriage makes it special.

We did the breakfast train which I highly recommend. Nerys' baps are to die for. You'd have to check the website for a straight return journey. It wasn't expensive and was very relaxedd

How far from welshpool railway station is this please as would be traveling on public transport

I would like to combine this with a trip to Powis Castle. When we get off at Welshpool station what is the best way to get to the castle? I've looked and it appears to be a half hour walk - is there a bus from the station to the castle or is there a taxi rank near the station at all?

Hi, there isn't a taxi rank at Raven Square Station, but you could book a taxi to meet you there. Our timetable runs pretty smoothly, so you will know what time the train will arrive at Raven Square. To be sure to tell the taxi it is not the main line station though! I don't know of a bus, but there is an excellent TIC in Welshpool, they might know more.

Hi, thanks for asking. Yes, dogs are welcome, but like other passengers they need a ticket at £3, single or return. They are not allowed in the eating area of the tearoom, unfortunately, except for registered assistance dogs (who also don't need a ticket). Doggy bowls provided outside to keep their thirst at bay!

We went with a friend in a wheelchair and they have a lift to get on and off the train. Worth ringing in advance to let them know as they’ll get it ready. :)

Hi,
We do allow dogs to travel for a small fee (£3.00, or £2.50 if booked in advance via our website). We regret that dogs are unable to go in the seated area in the tearoom at present, but on most days there is a carriage parked in the station as an overflow area where dogs are welcome - heated during colder months. Plenty of outdoor seating for nicer days too.

We plan to ride the railway in June of 2018. Is it possible to ride from Welshpool and spend time in LLanfair before returning? We have not been there and wondered about how the schedule works.

Thanks for the inquiry. Depending on when you travel, the train you arrive on will pause for between 40 minutes and an hour before returning to Welshpool. But all our tickets are rovers, so you are welcome to stay longer and return on a later train - just check the timetable for options. Either way, you will have time to enjoy our tearoom and have a short or a longer wander around the area.
