We arrived to see the first Agricultural Show in 3 years but unfortunately it was washed out. However we then had all morning to wander the streets of Clunes taking in the history and sights around the town. It is well worth visiting - a step back in time.

We visited the Clunes Town Hall last night for a theatre performance. We enjoyed looking around the town, particularly at the obelisk and the old cobblestoned gutters and the historic buildings. Upon arriving at the Town Hall we viewed some interpretive panels in the hall and saw the WW1 Roll of Honour. We also commented that the glorious painted ceiling in the hall reminded us of Her Majesty's Theatre in nearby Ballarat. Did the same people create both? We don't know. Maybe you can find out!

Clunes was the site of Victoria's first gold strike in 1851 which led to a gold rush which swept through central Victoria, resulting in a massive population boost for the state and great wealth for many. For a short period Australia was the richest country in the world as a result of the gold rush.
These days the town has beautifully preserved architecture which is considered to be some of the best collection of 19th Century buildings in Australia. Many of the original buildings in Clunes have been preserved from those gold rush days, perfectly illustrated with a visit to the wide and elegant Fraser Street. It is lined with 19th century buildings and shop fronts including the National Hotel (1862), Club Hotel (1870) and Union Bank (1865).
Running parallel to Fraser Street is the main thoroughfare of Bailey Street and it features a number of historic buildings including the old post office (built in 1878), the town hall (1872), courthouse (1872) and several churches.
But it’s not just history buffs that crave Clunes. Literature lovers flock here each May for the largest book event in regional Australia and year-round for its status as one of only 15 internationally recognised Booktowns in the world.
The town is a little sleepy when you stop to have a look around... but I believe that just adds to it's charm.

You only need a couple of hours here as most days virtually everything is closed. Nice walk around the historic city scape. Looks like a film set and it has been used as such several times.

The town went from riches to deserted in a short time, so no one could be bothered to replace or renovate the old buildings, which were built to last anyway. There are so many churches and public buildings, plus old banks and shops. Most are being repurposed.

A town worth visiting, just for the main street and beautiful preserved buildings. A good place to visit, as its a leisurely drive from Melboune, an hour and a half

You step back in time as soon as you lay eyes on the Clunes streetscape. Filled with quaint and old buildings, this town has been lovingly restored and maintained by the wonderful locals. Used for feature films and TV series as a backdrop for period productions, this town is simply charming. Of course it has all the mod cons as well, beautifully hidden behind the Olde World charm of the mid to late 1800’s.

We spent time slowly wandering around the town of Clunes while staying in the area.
Great to just meander from one old historic building to another.
I believe this was where Gold was first found in Victoria, boy these streets could tell some interesting stories.
We were there on a week day so not all the shops were open, it may be best to be there on the weekends. It will be busier then, it was nice to be there when quiet.
Stay for a while , have a feed , enjoy the history and let your mind go back to another era long ago.

Carisbrook Historical Society members made a booking to have a local guide open and show us around the former Clunes Town Hall, Court House and Free Library buildings and over the site of the former Port Phillip Goldming Company. We were most impressed with the locals' energy and commitment to restore these buildings to their former glory and to observe the remnants of the structures and sites of the former enormous mining company.Well worth booking a tour.

Clunes is a quiet town for most of the year. It has a very busy period with book week in May, the monthly farmer's markets and occasional special events. The quieter period makes it ideal to walk around the streets to admire some of the old buildings (by Australian standards). The old post office, free library, former hotels, churches and Town Hall are excellent examples from the historic gold rush era. Be aware that few places are open during the week except for a couple of cafe restaurants, the newsagency and the pub.
