Great guide named Mark who explained the history very well. Booked this by appointment during the off season. I was late for the appointment and they patiently waited. Lots of photos in the museum.

The logging railway/lumber museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the local railroad and lumber industry. The Shay locomotive on display, along with other equipment, is particularly interesting. My great-grandfather was a telegraph operator for the railroad so that display was even more fascinating personally.
An interesting detail from the exhibition is the mention of what are termed 'set-off houses,' which could be considered the earliest form of "mobile homes." Essentially, the railroad transported small houses on flat cars and used cranes to place them next to the tracks for the families of employees. A close replica of a set-off house is on display at the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center in Townsend.
Some of the facts about the logging in the area were worrisome when viewed by today's standards.
The old train station as full of fascinating artifacts that traced the history of the logging/ railroad industry in Townsend. It featured an assortment of vintage railroad and logging equipment. It's intriguing to learn that the Shay locomotive was actually operational in this region and how it was different than standard locomotives of the time. While it's not a vast museum, the admission is unbeatable—it's free!

This was a great place to take young kids they will live the little train that the owners do by remote when they see kids looking at it and the museum was nice also. It is free but you are allowed to leave a donation if you choose. Would go again.

This is a small museum that tells a lot of history. It's not for little kids (nor does it pretend to be) but if you enjoy learning about an area you are visiting you can spend a LOT of time here. The displays are augmented with well done, easy to read information boards that detail the history of how the railroad was built by the logging company early in the days of Townsend and immigrants' harvesting and settling in the Great Smoky Mountains. I spent about 45 minutes there but had I not had somewhere else to be I could easily have spent twice that time reading all the information, looking at the displays, etc. Even if you just need to get out of the car and stretch for a bit, this is a good stop with lots of information.

Lots of history with the exhibits on display outside. The museum itself was closed for the winter so check their website before going.

Fun stop after Tuckaleechee caverns, always cool to see some area history proudly displayed and trains are always awesome. It’s a free small museum with donations welcome and a gift shop. Great photos of the area history there, and a remote control model train to play with!

Boring in the off season. Museum & gift shop are not open in March. There are only 3 things to look at. A train, a steam machine thing and a logger. Pretty boring. My 3 year old was disappointed you cannot go inside of the train, and there is nothing to really 'play' on.

First of all it’s free. It’s also a time capsule of history there about the railroad and the logging industry. It’s well worth a stop if you have the time. Generally a half hour or so is enough before you move on to other activities such as Cades Cove, etc. There were a couple of families with children who seemed to love the old train there. That was nice to see.

This is an interesting logging railway / lumber museum covering the local railroad and lumber industry. Loved the Shay locomotive that was on display and other equipment. I found out that the Shay locomotive actually ran in this area.
The old train station was full of interesting equipment that outlined the history of the logging railroad industry in the Townsend area. It had a nice mix of old railroad and logging equipment that kept my Grandkids interested as well. It's not a large museum, but you cannot beat the price (free). Help support the museum by visiting the gift shop.

The museum is free! Perfect stop with kids. Staff is friendly and can answer any type of kid's questions. The kids can try out the lantern and check out a few trains.
