The Brazos Valley African American Museum (BVAAM) in Bryan, Texas, is a great resource on black history in the Brazos Valley. In addition to permanent exhibits, from time to time the BVAAM has special exhibits related to black culture and history. On Saturday, April 13, 2019, we attended the “Emotions” Art Exhibition Opening Reception featuring the work of Dillion Lute, known as “Roscoe the Artist,” a self taught painter who discovered his talent when he purchased a paint set and canvas for his son and continued to paint with the set afterwards. This exhibit was well worth attending.

As a contributing member of the Brazos Valley African American Museum (BVAAM) in Bryan, Texas, I recently received an invitation to attend a Primitive Folk Art Exhibition on October 20, 2018, featuring the art of Dorothy Shelby. This exhibit will be at the BVAAM until December 27, 2018. Following the program, during which Dorothy Shelby discussed her paintings and what inspired them, we viewed many of her paintings. I was pleased I attended this event. In addition to special exhibits, the BVAAM has a permanent collection that provides some insights into the history of African Americans in the Brazos Valley. The BVAAM is an important cultural resource.

I toured a couple of yrs ago and was amazed at all the historical items at the museum. It is near downtown Bryan with easy access. Very much worth the visit for at least an hour or more. Take your little ones with you.

This is a hidden gem. The Pruitts started this wonderful addition to the Bryan community some years ago. Museum is doing better and better over time. Good special exhibits. Deserves community support.

This is a nice museum. So much information about the Brazos Valley long ago. There is a very informative permanent exhibit area and a rotating exhibit area. There is also an area on one wall with historical stories from residents of Brazos Valley who are over 90 years old. I really liked this concept but some of the framed stories are too high to read. My son and I will return regularly to see the rotating exhibits. The docents are very friendly.

Really enjoy the history here, nevertheless, not much has changed since the opening years ago. Hopefully they will be able to get in more traveling exhibits.

While not large, the Brazos Valley African American Museum provides an excellent overview of black history, culture, and leadership in the Brazos Valley. Members of the staff with whom I had contact, and especially Wayne Sadberry, were friendly and helpful. This is a wonderful museum that adds to the understanding of the development of the Brazos Valley.

Attended one day of a film series during Black History month and found it really interesting as well as informative during a talk session following the film.

The museum is small, but has quality materials. I liked the wall with photos and stories from some very senior local folks. They also have a few rotating exhibits and public events. I highly recommend it to anyone who grew up in Bryan or is interested in its history. The best part was the passionate director, Mr. Sadberry.
