We were very interested in the Armstrong County Museum, so we drove over after our visit to Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Unfortunately, the sign listed that they were open on Friday afternoons, but the doors were locked. We live in Georgia, so will probably never get to enjoy the museum.

This is one of the best local museums I have seen anywhere in the world. What makes it special is the exhibits were donated by families and they are displayed in the same way. You get a connection with the people who built the area. It was a cold day and we found it by accident and spent 2 hours there, only $2 for seniors. The person on duty knew all about the exhibits and freely explained things.

I visited the Armstrong County Museum in Claude after visiting the Charles Goodnight Historical Center in Goodnight. The Goodnight Home was interesting ($10 to tour) but I was glad I had arranged my visit so I was in the area when the Armstrong County Museum was open-Tues and Sat from noon to four-$2 for seniors-as there was so much more to see at the museum.
Kristy was on duty the day of my visit. She gave me a quick overview then let me tour the museum at my own pace (took about an hour and a half). From the outside you cannot tell how huge the museum is. You learn the history of the JA Ranch from the time it was formed back in the 1870s until the present. In addition there is lots of info on Charles Goodnight, "Father of the Texas Panhandle" who among many other things designed the first chuckwagon and experimented with "cattalo"-a cross between buffalo and Black Angus cattle. There are histories of many of the pioneer families and a reconstructed "old Claude" with many old store fronts. There were many other things to see including beautiful and enlarged photographs of local scenery. I could go on and on but you get the idea I was most impressed.
After touring the museum (I was the only visitor), Kristy took me next door to see the Gem Theater which first opened in 1915. It is still used today and was interesting to see the architecture and decor. Everything was accessible except someone in a wheelchair would need assistance in the Gem Theater as there are some steps and a rather steep incline in seating area.
If your time is limited and you must choose between visiting the Goodnight home or the Museum, I would definitely choose the Museum.

I stopped here on a Tuesday right when they opened at 12PM. I was the only one visiting at the time. It was only $2 (Senior over 55) to get in, otherwise only $3. Lots of information on Charles Goodnight and Chief Quanah Parker along with loads of local history of the area. Displays on all of the founding families and a historic theatre. As far as smaller county museums go (and I have been to a number of them if you check my reviews) this one was a pretty good stop and actually interesting.
Note: There is a lot of information on Charles Goodnight in the museum. I went to the Goodnight Historical Center after visiting the museum and wished I had skipped it. I learned everything I needed to know at the museum here and it was a lot cheaper.

Whether you are interested in Texas Panhandle History, especially the history of Charlie Goodnight, or intrigued by the writings of Larry McMurtry, this museum provides plenty of rewarding displays. Families are delineated with detailed and photographic resources. Not only chronically but in relation to various cultures that blossomed where once only the buffalo roamed.
Listen to Sylvia. Give yourself a couple of hours to view the multiple sections. If you are hungry ask about Mighty's burgers.

This is a wonderfully educational museum! Probably the best small town museum we have ever visited. Historical background is provided on families who settled the Panhandle and the contributions made past and present. We already knew a bit about Charles Goodnight, but we learned so much more about the rich heritage of so many more families and the settling of the Panhandle. What happened in the Panhandle impacted the rest of Texas and beyond. The hostess at the time we visited (Sylvia, I believe) spent a lot of time with us giving us background info and taking us on a tour of the Gem Theatre. Don't miss this Museum and the Gem Theatre if you are in the area.

This historic little theatre is a close, convenient drive from Amarillo. Good times abound with a variety of events from plays, musicals, art and music events.
While there, be sure to visit the Armstrong County Museum which houses an amazing variety of area history. If you're familiar with the Lonesome Dove books/movies, then THIS place is a must see!
The staff at the museum, theatre and the Charles Goodnight Historical Center are very knowledgeable and friendly.
