This was a nice scenic tour. The house is lovely and the grounds are beautiful. Our guide seemed nervous but was charming, kind and knowledgeable! The only issue is the only tours available were guided, and that means they are longer. Highlights 1 hr. tour didn’t start for 45 mins, so we took the 1.5 hour tour although it isn’t what we would prefer since it started in 15 mins. But that 1.5 hours doesn’t include the grounds… just the house…with no real opportunities to sit anywhere until near the very end. Sadly this tour means stairs and lots of standing, which is why I prefer self guided when I have bad knees and standing and stairs don’t make them happy at all. But we enjoyed the information and the tour itself. You should leave your things in the car as you will have to put everything in lockers for theft prevention. Probably why there are no self guided tours when we were there. Things are roped so you won’t get crazy close to things but you can see it all.

Gardens are nice, just like the photos (though it’s February, so many things not blooming). Many paths are closed off. The upstairs was closed. The downstairs of the house had many lovely rooms. It made me wonder how the people got so rich to be able to buy them (robber barons? Slave owners? Dunno, but the lady who told us about the Hoggs was very reverential). Still, it is fun to see what creative people can create, like the beautifully carved wood furniture, folding poker table, chair back resembling a harp, and much more. The thing I disliked: Ladies are told to put their purses (regardless how small) in a locker “to protect the furniture.” The rooms are all cordoned off with wide paths through them or disallowing entry. So to imply that a little purse might hit furniture is just a lie. They should just be honest and say “no backpacks, purses, etc.” in the place because some people might steal.

After walking the gardens for over an hour with garden information sheet in our hands and bright magenta stickers worn on our chests, my family and I were harassed by a rude cottage store employee and another equally rude office employee in regard to whether or not we had purchased tickets to tour the site. Shameful and poor customer interaction with my family and me have caused us to not be inclined to PAY to visit the gardens, or house, ever again. Very disappointed with our experience this past Sunday. Perhaps a clinic on how to interact PROFESSIONALLY with the PAYING CUSTOMER would be of tremendous benefit.

The guided house tour by Lisa was great, got to visit multiple rooms and see antique furnishings and artwork. The rooms were set up as they had been used by Ima Hogg over the years. Learned some new things that I hadn’t seen in other home tours.
Gardens were nice, the azaleas weren’t blooming as they bloomed earlier in the year but can imagine how beautiful they would be. It made for a nice stroll viewing some of the statues and fountains.

Pleasant way to sepnd a few hours.
Buy your ticket at the top and then walk or drive down to the Bayou. Cross the very bouncy, swinging wooden bridge for the house and Gardens.
You get to see most of the house (no kitchen or bathrooms) and in comparison to similar houses in Europe you get to really go into each room, not just stand in the door. Nice gardens, green but not much flowers yet (Apr). Still really nice.

There's really not much I can add to the previous reviews, Bayou Bend is just amazing. The collection includes masterpieces of American furniture, paintings, silver, and ceramics and Texas decorative arts. The gardens feature native woodland paths, ravines, water features and southern plantings. I would consider it a must do in Houston.

En el ingreso hay unas damas sentadas que cobran USD 10 por persona y no nos entregaron ni el ticket que solicitamos, ni folletería/información del parque. El recorrido es muy corto y pobre, tanto casa como jardines.

Touring a private home of a player as significant as Ima Hogg (1882-1975)* is an opportunity not to be missed. She was a famous antique collector, a Houston civic leader and philanthropist. Her (and, the emphasis is on HER, because she competed with the biggest of the big collectors and museums all over the world and won more high profile auctions than she lost!) sense of taste, genuine love of the works, and ability to research pieces of merit made her a legend in the antique world. She was also a relentless and tough negotiator when buying pieces directly for individuals and collectors. The American collection is undoubtedly one of the best you will ever see--many major museums would love to have her pieces. The condition of the collection is pristine! From what I have heard from people who knew her, she would NEVER buy junk or "fixer uppers." To her, original condition was EVERYTHING.
We really like the furniture, but the curators have on display her silver and ceramics, which are stunning.
Houston has a lot of fine museums, but is you are limited on time, put this one high on your list! You will be glad you did.
*NOTE: Her father was the governor of the state of Texas and independently wealthy (very, by all accounts). He thought giving his girls strange names was funny! Ima inherited a significant amount of money and used it to build her incredible collection, the house and the gardens.

It was an exciting discovery, a Houston jewel. We learnt why furniture was such a statement for American Colonist: it was the only thing they were allowed to manufacture! Lisa was a joy to be with, my husband and I learnt from her insightful stories for 90 minutes, and we wanted to hear more. Lisa brought Ms Ima Hogg’s challenges and opportunities to life, an American descendant of Scottish immigrants, who used her wealth to preserve the distinctive mark of immigrants to the US. We saw how effective propaganda attracted German immigrants to Texas. The house, the furniture, the gardens are all beautiful and interesting. The stories that Lisa told us were such a bonus. She is a brilliant docent and a lively and well versed person.

I didn't see any dogs in my visit, but you might want to contact the Gardens directly. For safety reasons they might not, there is a bridge you have to cross and only one person at a time and no stopping on the bridge. It is over the bayou beautiful scene buy for our little loved ones don't know. Give them a call and I am sure they will give you an appropriate response.

Yes there are many times brides have photos taken in the garden area. I am not sure about using the house. The gardens are beautiful and photographers use it often.

Bayou Bend admission prices for highlights tours, study tours, and self-guided house tours range from $12.50 to $15 for adults. Admission to only the gardens is $5 for ages 10 and up.
