We go here regularly, because the birding is so good.
This April we got in on the beginning of the Spring migration and saw scores of new sighting for us.
The Center has a great boardwalk and some covered viewing platforms.
We saw a Whooping Crane family (in the distance) here last January
And, you may get to see their resident alligator if you are lucky. We saw him right out in the open in April.
This is a must visit place for birders!

It is a fully self-service, but nicely maintained outdoor, bird watching area. Parking is free. There are 2 covered gazebos with a little bit of seating if traveling with smalls or elderly..

Always nice to visit, especially since they completed the restoration from the hurricane. Today, March 4, we saw 4 Whooping Cranes / that was exciting.

My husband went just about every morning while we were visiting Port A. Nice paved paths and boardwalks and lookouts over the marsh.

We visited this location near Corpus Christe out of season to basically check it out for an in-season visit when the birds migrate. There are two boardwalks in an L arrangement that surround a small bay. Naturally you are shooting down and in many cases the birds were too far for the setups that we had. Still, we saw species that we had not seen at the South Padre Island Birding Center on the southern end of the sandbar (Avocets, Long Billed Dowitchers, Ibis, Stilt Sandpiper) and some that we did (Black necked Stilts, Tricolor Herons and White Morph Reddish Egrets) Parking in season looks to be a problem, but a golf cart was ferrying visitors from fare parked cars.

I enjoyed my visit trying out a new camera. A friend I saw out there recommended an app to identify birds called Merlin. Not only were the birds interesting, the local alligator came out and came right up under one of the walkways and stayed close for an hour. Nice place to go.

I’ve been to many bird sanctuary’s in our travels. This one was one of our favorites. So many different species all in one place. Many rare birds. I’d go back anytime. This is also the area where the whooping cranes come in February, although we did not see any it was still a great visit.

For birders and especially birding photographers this place is heaven. The number of birds that we were almost on top of was extraordinary. Pelicans bathing, avocets, stilts, teals, shovelers, dowitchers etc etc. Truly a wonderful place. The boardwalks are accessible and right at the beginning but there's a longer walk into the marsh. Highly recommend.

If you're a bird watcher or just a curious amateur, this is a nice place to satisfy your needs. It is out of the way so you can enjoy the view without feeling like you're in the middle of town. The newly built walkway is an attractive addition. You feel close enough to get a good look at the birds, ducks, butterflies, turtles, minnows, etc but at a safe distance so that you don't disturb the ecosystem.
Depending on what you wanted to see and if you walked the length of the path, this could be a short visit and you could stay a while.

Some variety but not all that attractive. Looks like an afterthought. Excited to spot alligator, but the rest felt anticlimactic.

No dogs are allowed in the birding center. I left mine at the rental house.

There is a fun event at the end of February, "The Whooping Crane Festival", this site doesn't allow links but you can search it.
Also give Aransas Bay Birding Charters a call as they will be able to tell you what birds return when.
We love the Turnbull birding center and unlike others who posted we were so excited to see the gator!! We had been going for years before Hurricane Harvey and never got to see one. The new boardwalk is awesome and we hope they will keep expanding.
There are some other sanctuaries near and in Rockport which is just a short drive so search those as well.

The Whopping Cranes generally arrive in October and stay until March

NO dogs, please. Not at this small locale. Birders are trying to see lifetime listers; you will be ousted. Follow other directions above for dog care. Mustang Island dogs okay.

What are the hours of operation? What are the entry fees?
No entry fee, open 7 days a week and open 24 hours but daytime would be best. They have a small parking lot and a person just walks along a path. No employees or entrance gates. No concessions. Very much open to the public.

We were in Corpus Christi and caught this site on the way back home. It was a nice stop - simple but enjoyable to see wildlife. Cheers!
