When you walk in you will be greeted by Mr. Preston. There will be a book to sign your name & town where you are from. There is a donation jar to help Mr. Preston pay for the lights and water. Mr. Preston added on a nice bathroom. Mr. Preston has done a wonderful job collecting items. Mr.Carey Preston gives an excellent tour of Vernon's Past to Present. Everyone should stop by & check out this wonderful county Jail that is an a Historical Museum. Be sure & purchase the book he had written on Vernon. It makes great gifts to give to family & friends who have left Vernon.

I stopped by to research a topic and had the honor of chatting with the owner, Preston. The museum is made up of his private collection which he shares with the public. He knows all things Vernon. It is very worth your time to visit. A wonderful and rare find. Good for all ages.

A really great museum that tells the history of Vernon and Wilbarger County. The collection is really well put together in a way that tells a story. I was very surprised at the collection and display. Worth a stop, does not take tahat long to see but well worth the time. Easy access off of US 287, US 183, and US 283.

I was skeptical about taking my 8 and 9 year old great grandchildren to this museum, but they enjoyed it as much as I did. He has done a fabulous job of acquiring Vernon history and displaying it in its own era and association. My great grandchildren have ask to go back. I highly recommend visiting this museum. It is an asset to Vernon. Thank you Mr. Cary

This is the old Wilbarger Co. jail....converted into a museum. This is NOT your normal, sterile, "gaze only from afar" type museum. This place is chocked full of really neat things and displays concerning Vernon, Wilbarger Co., and Texas history. The curator, Preston Cary, is extremely passionate about the historical preservation of the artifacts and Wilbarger Co.'s contribution to WW2. Please visit and donate to this great project. Call beforehand as times of operation vary. 940-886-7993

We popped in on a beautiful Saturday afternoon for our first visit to the Wilbarger County Historical Museum. Preston Cary, the curator, greeted us immediately and guided us through this wonderfully arranged tour of all things Vernon. It was just unbelievable the amount of items he has collected over the last 30 some odd years. He has the history of every piece and so many wonderfully one of kind items dating back to the 1800's. This has only been open one year, and can't wait to visit again to see his research department is open.

A wonderful collection of memorabilia from the Vernon area. So nice to hear the stories that go with each 'treasure' from the person who so lovingly gathered these mementos of the past. Take your time and look in each nook and cranny. There is a lot to see and the collection is only a fraction of what has been collected.

We spent several hours with the gentleman who has started and is still expanding this local museum. It is filled with local and regional items and is really worth a few hours if you're in the area. Preston, the owner is just full of local history and enjoys sharing it. The old local prison is upstairs which he showed us. I'm not sure it's really open to the public yet but it let us see it. A fascinating several hours!
