The visitors center had a short film which gave an overview of the history of the location, which was interesting. Then we went out to explore the buildings. It is drivable, which was good. The barn has a couple of old buggies as well as tools to work the fields. The main house is empty of furniture awaiting restoration. But you can go upstairs to the 2nd floor. The stairs are sturdy. Make sure you go to where the furnishings are stored, as that is interesting to see also. We drove through the sugar mill area and the slave quarters. Due to the cold, windy weather, we didn't get out, but you could see some of the old brick foundations. There are bathrooms on site, and they were clean.

Beautiful ancient trees grow on the grounds and the expanses of green areas are beautiful. The buildings are having some minor renovations, so some of the sites are closed or have limited interest, but overall I had an amazing time here.

The family happen to find this gem while driving through town. So happy we did. The grounds were beautiful, especially the huge old trees. Everything was organized very well. You can walk around looking at everything. The people there were very nice. There was a gentleman there (believe he looks after the grounds) who was very helpful by telling us more of the history and answering questions.

We drove through West Columbia & stopped by. Would advise to check if the main house is open. It was not when were there. The self tour exhibits were interesting. Great place to walk around. Clean restrooms, day use picnic area.

The Varner-Hogg Plantation is a beautiful site along Varner Bayou in West Columbia. It dates back to the Republic of Texas and there is a nice museum in the visitor area. The orientation film and small museum provides a good overview of the plantation, its residents and their place in history.
The plantation produced sugar in the 1800s and oil was discovered in the early 1900s. The Varner, Patton and Hogg (former Governor of Texas James Hogg) families lived on this property. Ima Hogg gifted the plantation to the State of Texas in 1958.
You can walk the grounds to tour the outbuildings, the Patton gravesite and see the remains of the sugar processing buildings . The home is open but is undergoing renovation and all the furniture has been removed.

Having been to a few plantations in my day, it was nice to see one that focused on local history aside from just plantation life. While one can see the different buildings, antiques and equipment used in the fields the big draw here I found was the museum which told the story of the plantation as it passed hands of the multiple owners through the years.
The main building was closed due to renovation but all the supplemental areas more than made up for it. There is plenty to read and see between the visitors center, 2 on site museums, old bathing pond, barn, as well as the remnants of a sugar mill, oil rig, and slave quarters.
There is plenty of ground to cover so expect to be there for some time. Also don't be surprised to see some local wildlife. We encountered an adorable and very friendly baby armadillo. Lastly the folks who run the attraction are incredibly friendly and helpful and have a well stocked gift shop for all your souvenir needs so be sure to stop by and enjoy your visit.

Enjoyed our tour of the site, very well maintained. Restrooms were clean. There is so much Texas history in this area.

The Varner-Hogg Mansion is nice but with all things - read. Many of the furnishings were purchased after the home was lived in by the Patton’s.
The guide was good, but unprepared- said first time doing the tour in six months.
It was great to see once, but unlike Bayou Bend - once is enough.

We needed a restful weekend and this is a beautiful place. We rented the three bedroom cottage which was a delight, set among historic trees. Deer fed right in the yard at night as we watched from the front porch. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. This area has a rich history dating back to the Texas Revolution. West Columbia is a short drive from Houston and well worth the trip.

Before you even get to the house, there is a lot of information in the "gift shop" building. We learned a lot about how a plantation operated and much about what it was like being a slave. It was a comprehensive tour of the plantation and they have a wonderful brochure with a map. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable
and pleasant. I highly recommend it.
