WW II history that many do not know about

Go to the Topaz museum in town before going to the site - but do go to the site. Great information an brochures to help explain what you will see at the historic site. The rive out to and around the historic site is easily done in a standard sedan.

Don't confuse this site with the Topaz Museum; we got the two confused and ended up here. Agree with most recent review of "Only if you have time." You are in a rugged, desolate territory. I am sorry for the people we "relocated" here; please forgive us.

Only if you have time

If you have the time it is worth seeing the actual site, but the information you want is at the Topaz Museum. Long drive out. Nothing but markers and open area to see. Thankfully the whole place was dismantled so we do not have to look at it.

Experience the desolation

Sad and fascinating history, but outside of experiencing the desolation of the place, there is no reason to spend time out there. Especially in the 100+ summer heat. We read the plaques and drove around the foundations of the buildings. We would have paired this with a visit to the museum back in town, but it was closed due to coronavirus. Having seen it, I have no reason to return.

A Place in History that Should Never Be Forgotten

There may not be much left to see at the sight of the Topaz War Relocation Center, but if you're in the area, it would be worth your time just to drive to the site just to see how desolate, lonely and remote a place it really was for all the Japanese-Americans who were relocated here during WWII. This is some of the most barren land you will find anywhere in the USA. It could not have been easy for those who were forced to stay here.

There are some remains left behind along with a few markers, and a short walk out into the ruins provide a good way to meditate on what it must have been like to live in this place.

When we were here mid-day on a weekday in early July, there was not another car or person in sight, which only added to our experience.

The real deal

Go to the Topaz Museum in Delta first to get a purview. Its a 16 mile drive from Delta to the actual site, the last 5-6 miles on a gravel road. All the things you read about at the museum become tangible when you journey out to this site. You will feel the desolation of the site for a long time.

Shocking, sobering slice of US history.

There is little remaining of the internment camp where a large number of Japanese -American families were uprooted from their homes and shipped to during World War II . But visiting the site brings home the sad truth far more powerfully than reading about in any history book.
These American citizens were confined to this spot by other Americans who feared they would spy for, or aid the enemy, because they were of the same race.
As I said, there is little left of the camp itself, some building foundations, walkways the camp's streets and a remarkable number of nails - left (I guess) from long gone wooden structures.
Signage around the camp tells where buildings once stood and the purpose they filled. Built in and surrounded by alkaline desert, Topaz isn't a place many would choose to live, But a half hour waking its streets is educational and sobering.
The Topaz museum in near-by Delta, would, I'm sure, shine more light on the camp's history but it was unfortunately closed when we visited. We intend to tour it on a future trip.

Not much to see

There is not a lot to see out there, but it should be seen with a guide from the Topaz Museum. You get a better feel for what it was like there during World War 2 when someone tells you about it.

Very clean and alot of true information. Good personal information from actual prisoners. Good video from actual footage original in the Library of Congress. Actual 1/2 barrack. Beautiful shell creations came out of this bleak existence in camp.

Makes you think

There is very little at this sight which is what makes it so interesting considering all that was once there. It really makes you stop and think. Once you get out of your car and walk around there is more there than you first thought. I found this fascinating. We found a rock garden the museum docent mapped for us. There are nails, wood, foundations, cement. It was the type of place that makes you feel something. You can almost feel the sadness but at the same time you can tell the interned people tried to make the best out of a terrible and unfair situation.
