Rented e-bikes from Greater Zion E-Bike Rentals in La Verkin. They delivered my bike up here to the trail system. I was hesitant to rent an e-bike at first but it turned out amazing. I was able to handle the trails with no problem and use the assist up the hills. The views from the mesa were amazing overlooking down below.

The mesa top trail was nice. You're up high, away from everything, and have great views of nature and the great scenery. Bring plenty of water if it's hot; you'll be out there alone for a few hours at least and will have only what you carry. The canyon trail ( a side trail) is interesting as it follows the old Hurricane canal, but it is not clearly marked in several areas. I only found my way due to ribbons tied to branches, rocks stacked up or arranged like arrows, and other signs left by previous hikers. One portion of the trail has been fenced off without an obvious way to get down to the canyon floor and then back to the trail; not sure how they really wanted me to negotiate that obstacle. Finally, there is a cliff connector stretch of trail near the Virgin Dam that is mostly ok, but a short stretch of it is not hiker friendly. If you have any fear of heights, you will have to turn back (several miles if you have to turn around) because this short stretch is only passable if you are fresh and have no trouble walking on a very narrow strip of sloped gravel trail with no trail edge and a steep slope down on one side that rolls off a shear cliff to the river hundreds of feet below. Beautiful but not relaxing. Find a different loop or section of trail to follow.

Recently rode this trail system...the single track was flowing and awesome!! The technical sections are short and easily traversed. Highly recommended!

The area is better known as "JEM," a combination of the initials of the people who pioneered these trails. Great rides are available along the Hurricane Rim and along any number of other designated trails. Generally the trails are flowy, but can be kind of coarse (that's a contradiction--I know...). Trail ratings are accurate. With a shuttle, less fit riders may be dropped at the upper trailhead a few miles east of Hurricane on State Road-59 and then descend to the trailhead near the Sheep Bridge near Virgin, Utah. Summers are scorching, so chose the time of year and the time of day wisely. The JEM area is much easier access (passenger car) than Gooseberry Mesa. Enjoy!
