Early summer, springtime, you'll see lots of butterflies on the "beach". The lake is bordered by a dam and the view of the Vermont Hillside is amazing.

I have stayed at about eight different Vermont state parks and this is one of my favorites. I think the reason I like it is because it is not a "family" campground like Jamaica or Woodford. This is a small park built on the side of Bald mountain. You can see one site from another but if you pick the right site, it still feels like you are camping in the woods. When I camp, it is just my wife and I and this is how I prefer it.

There are 2 bathrooms, One is just toilets and cold water sinks, the other is toilets, cold water sinks and 50 cent hot showers. The bathrooms are kept very clean by the rangers. Firewood is available onsite for six dollars a bundle.

I see some criticisms that there is not alot to do here. That is mostly true. There is a nice hike available up Bald mountain from within the park. It takes about 45 minutes to the top and there is a nice view.

Here are a couple other ideas:
Walk out the front entrance to the park and take a left down the quaint country dirt road. After about a 10 minute walk there is a covered bridge. If the weather is warm and the water is high enough and moving. Go for a swim under the bridge. If you cross the bridge to the route 30 side there are trails that lead down to the river. Under the bridge you will find a rope that swings out into a deeper hole for swimming.

If you continue past the covered bridge and take a left at the intersection. You will walk for another 10 minutes past some stables and you will arrive at Townshend Dam recreational area. A few years back there was a nice beach here but I think Hurricane Irene ruined it. Im unsure if it has reopened. Regardless, there is a beautiful view and nice playgrounds if you have kids.

If your camping in the summer and its hot, here is one of our favorite things to do: Pack a picnic lunch. Get in your car and drive about five minutes down route 30 back towards Newfane. You will see Dutton Berry farm on your left. Stop in and pick some berries. Depending on when you are there they will have Strawberries, Blueberries or Raspberries. Its alot of fun. You will be hot when your done. Get in your car and drive south about another 15 minutes. You will see alot of cars parked along the river. Stop at one of these sites, go down to the river, have a nice swim to cool off, enjoy your picnic lunch with fresh berries. Its a pretty festive place to be.

Go up to Jamaica State park for the day. Hike along the West river and hike up to the falls.

We arrived for our two night reserved campsite and were warmly greeted by Tiffany. The campground is small but extremely clean and well maintained. We had a campsite with a tent pad; the pad is about the size of a two car garage. The site included a clean fire pit with grate and a large picnic table. Potable water was from a faucet just behind our site.
Campsites are not private; all of your neighbors are visible. This was not an issue as everyone was respectful especially of the quiet hours.
Bathrooms are clean, showers are hot and campfire wood and ice are available for purchase.

NOBODY was swimming. There were 2 guys kayaking. A few people were at one of the picnic sites. They have a couple of bathrooms. We didn't see everything, but we did drive around a bit. Still a nice place to hang out I suppose.

Our family has, literally, gone here for decades. It is wonderful for all ages. About every 2 to 5 years we have a huge family picnic. We reserve a pavilion with an open grill and electricity. There are plenty of tables, both under the pavilion and near by. There are big play structures, horse shoes, volley ball court and swings. The grass and landscaping are beautiful and clean. We always find the restrooms to be very clean and fresh. There is plenty of lake for kayaking and swimming.
It is a beautiful spot for large or small gatherings, and even for sneaking away to read in the shade on a summer day!

This spot is a great place for a family to take a break. it has a swimming area that was damaged with hurricane irene and is due to be cleaned up and open summer 2017. nice spot for cookouts and bbqs with tables, pavilions, bbqs, and restrooms. volleyball net, hiking trails and playgrounds also there. and best thing, no entrance fee!

A friend and I were on our annual Vermont get-a-way recently, and we found this new (for us) place nearby to hike. I've driven past a hundred times but had never stopped before. Access to the park (Townshend State Forest) is off Rt. 30 at the Townshend dam. Directions in my trail guide were not good in helping us find the trail head to Bald Mountain, but we finally did with the help of some local construction workers nearby. The gate and building at camp headquarters were closed. We parked outside the gate and walked in. This is beautiful camping area, with many lots right along the brook cascading-down mountainside. Blue blazers were visible and marked the well-trodden trail clearly. Our round trip hike to the summit of Bald Mountain took about 3 hours round-trip, including stops for resting, and we had lunch at the top with great views of Mt. Monadnock to the east, and Stratton Mountain to the west. It is not "bald" at the 1,680-foot summit at all, but there are clearings nearby which offer these great views. Climb in elevation from camp is about 1,100 feet, some of it on the steep side. Along the way you are joined by the brook on the lower half of the trail. We also had chickadees come visit us, and I was a little freaked by seeing a face (raccoon ?) peering out at me from a small cave under a rock on the way down, after just asking my friend if it ever seemed while hiking in the woods that he was being observed. We were. Lots of cool flora and fauna were spotted along the trail as well, including several mushroom species, and the occasional small toad and salamander. The brook itself is amazing with many small pools and rocky outcrops with lush, green vegetation. Also, we never saw another human along the trail, which was a real bonus for enjoying some quiet solitude.

This park and mountain trail were a great find, and a joy to hike on this warm late summer day. I will go back.

We camp at TSP every Labor Day for the chance to enjoy the great outdoors in an atmosphere of relaxation. "Primitive" camping with no hookups, beautiful trail leading up Bald Mountain, first class park rangers(Gary & his wife Pat), and fellow campers who are kind and considerate make this one of our favorite vacations of the year.
If you're into big rig camping with all the amenities of home this probably isn't going to be the place for you...but if you enjoy peaceful bliss in an outdoor setting you won't be disappointed...
