Philpott has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It is always beautiful! Natural views, clean water and great fun!

Campsite #15 at the Goose Point COE Campground. Whatever else is going on in the world, this will always be worth it. The sites are small, like another reviewer mentioned, but perfect for our tent. Warm bathhouse (it was in the 30s overnight) and clean facilities. Come for the view...

The Goose Point campground, a COE campground, is set on beautiful Philpott Lake. There is a small swim beach and a decent boat launch, and the park and restrooms were clean while we were there.
It seems like to purpose of the campground is to squeeze out every possible inch of rentable space from a strip of ground. Sites are crammed closely together. We stayed in #45, and at least had no one to one side of us as this was the first site on the road going into our loop. Each site is perched on the side of a hill, out of necessity as the terrain is steep and hilly. We saw many big rigs there, and were amazed that they even tried to maneuver around some of the hills and into the small sites.
Our loop had one restroom, 2 stalls each side. The bath house was down a hill, and was shared with another loop. Our site had electric and water.
The staff we encountered on our way in was friendly, and the uniformed gentleman we talked to that evening was very nice and willing to answer questions. We were struck by the lack of information available about the park and the surrounding areas, with brochures and such. I guess we are used to things that are available at state parks. The person working the gate house the next morning was surfing the net when we pulled up to ask a question, and seemed quite annoyed at our intrusion, no smile or willingness to converse.
By talking to other campers, we learned of Rocky Knob and the hiking trails available near the Rocky Knob visitor center (which was closed), about 45 minutes from camp. But we found the trails and had some nice hikes. Also, the town of Floyd isn't far away, and we visited and got takeout for dinner.
We were prepared with all supplies, since some reviews talked about how isolated this park is. However, if you make a left turn out of the park, there are a few small stores and gas stations 15 - 20 minutes down the road.
At Philpott Dam, there are brochures available outside the closed Visitor Center, with information about the lake and some of the sights to see while boating. The view from the VC at the dam is pretty, and there are a few hiking trails around, including a Fit Trail. We would have liked to go kayaking, but it was windy and cool during our stay, not the best kayaking weather, but is worth another visit.

Enjoyed time there with the grandkids, playing and running having fun. We enjoyed the overlook not too far from the visitor center/park office. The lake was as beautiful as we remembered.

Gorgeous views, wonderful picnic area overlooking lake.
Very nice boat dock and snack shop. Trails need work because they’ve got washed out ruts. Helpful visitor center with nice restrooms.
Quiet park setting but probably busier during fall leaves turning.
There are 6 beaches for swimming around the lake.

The wife and I wanted to go somewhere that wasn't far. Turned out to be a great idea at a nice little spot with nice views and friendly people along with staff. At $25 for a site was great but only electric/water hook ups. Dump station was easy to get to and in 5 minutes we were on the road. We will be back.

Cell service was sketchy around the lake so if you really want to unplug, this might be the place for you. The best places for service we found was at the Goose point campground. We visited the Fairstone Falls, Philpott dam overlook, Goose Point campground and Salthouse Branch Campground. Views overlooking the dam were very pretty. Goose point had level campsites along a creek and salthouse branch had some campsites on the lake which were very nice and fairly level. Great place for walking and hiking or spending time on the lake if you have a boat. Beautiful wooded rural areas with great views.

The lake and dam were a motorcycle ride destination.
The Philpott Lake overlook provides a great view of the lake. Spectacular view of the coves and undeveloped shoreline. Rare treat to see condo-free lake shore.
Good seating to relax and enjoy. As we relaxed my first time here friends took and sent pictures to friends.
A small visitor center provides more information about the Corps of Engineers operation. The lake has several marinas, picnic area and boat launch facilities.
Before departing we rode to the bottom of the dam for a look at the height of the dam. The area was cooler than the top due to the release of cold water to the Smith River. An excellent trout stream
Overall the view is worth a trip. Other outdoor activities are available.

We stayed at the Salthouse Branch campground. Very nice, clean and we'll maintained campground with quaint swim areas and gorgeous views of the lake. I seriously want to look into kayaking because of seeing all the boats and canoes. For only $25 a night, you can't beat that!
