The best Plantation I've ever been to. I highly recommend everyone to take the time to visit this Planation. The history and grounds were just incredible. The tour guide, Melissa was so impressive. She knew so much, even about other Plantations. She knows the history and every detail of the house, family generations, history, etc. I truly believe Melissa's heart and soul was in the game, so she brought everything to life and made the tour alive. I can't say enough about her. Go see this Planation.

This is a very old established family property/ home. 13 generations have lived here. the tour is only of the bottom floor. It is a very nice tour. All the bricks of all the buildings were made on site. The home is set on a beautiful property surrounded by the James River. It is a lovely setting. The tour guide was very well informed.

Purchased self-guided $11.00 per person audio tour on-line; we could not afford the $25.00 per person interior first floor guided tour. Upon arrival, we could not get access to audio tour. After 25 minutes changing multiple settings/trouble shooting on my phone to obtain access. Frustrating experience. Ample parking. Restrooms on site. Not sure why these plantations charge so much for guided tours. How does the Berkley Plantation offer an awesome guided educational tour for $16.00 per person?? Manicured grounds. Only thing we found different and interesting was the Dovecote.

A very informative experience. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and the plantation was done very well. The out buildings were also open to view. Highly recommended.

There are many fascinating facts relating to Shirley Plantation. It is the oldest plantation house in Virginia, dating to 1614. It still is inhabited by descendants of the original owner, now the 11th and 12 generations of the Hill and Hill Carter families. It is the oldest family-owned business in North America, dating to 1648. And it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. But when my wife and I visited the house, I was blown away when the tour guide pointed to a cradle in the corner of the living room. "That belonged to Robert E. Lee," she said. Lee's mother was Anne Hill Carter, who married Revolutionary War hero Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee in the mansion's parlor, and the young Lee spent many days as a child and adult at Shirley. Located on State Route 5, on the north bank of the James River, near Charles City and Hopewell, Virginia, along the scenic byway that stretches between Williamsburg and Richmond, Shirley is largely in its original state. The upper floors are occupied by members of the 11th generation of the Hill Carter family while the bottom floor is open for public tours. The three-story "Great House" is constructed in the Georgian style with red brick walls and white trim boards on a square foundation. The house has no actual front door, as both the riverside and courtyard side entrances have a two-story portico with Doric columns supporting a pediment. The house is surrounded by several outbuildings, including a two-story kitchen with living quarters for servants, a two-story laundry with living quarters, a smokehouse, stable, ice house, storehouse and dovecote.

Melissa led our tour of the house yesterday and she did a great job! So many fascinating details about an amazing house that the family still lives in!! The outbuildings were fun to explore. It's a privilege to tour this wonderful historic property.

I debated paying for the guided tour of the great house but it is absolutely worth it. My tour guide (Kathy) knew so much information about the plantation that really made it come alive. Plus that building is definitely the most interesting and you cannot go in without a guided tour. It's a ways outside of town, but highly worth it!

Was excited to tour this plantation and home! Arrived early afternoon to several signs demanding payment (kinda pushy) but the gift shop to pay was locked up tight. Sign said pay online or put cash in the box and they’d be back 20 minutes ago. Noticed children’s bikes/helmets in the yard, dogs in pens and a modern day swinging chair on the upper balcony. There were young kids inside, visible through the windows. Did the employee bring her kids/dogs for the day? Do people live here? If so, how historically accurate could the home be? 10 more minutes go by and still nobody around. Decided to leave. Pretty disappointed.

Hard to call it a museum when it is lived in by the ancestor of the original plantation owner and his family. Lots of areas off limits as a result. I really felt we wasted our time and money.
