I stopped briefly in Charlottesville and walked a bit around town. The courthouse square and the old courthouse itself really caught my eye. Very nice and well worth a visit.

Visit while downtown Charlottesville. Beautiful Civil War era sculptures and walkways. Courteous staff and home of many Albemarle County services. Park carefully....drive slowly. You want to take in the churches, fine hotels, offices and delightful shops along the north side of the Downtown Mall. Easy access to US 54 and US 250 by-pass.

Il palazzo è bello e perfettamente tenuto e si trova in una zona affascinante, il color rosso mattone ovunque, tanta storia per questa sede istituzionale del 1800. Statue e monumenti, un cannone sul fronte, non ho potuto visitare l'interno purtroppo. Posizione comodissima a due passi dal centro storico.

Albemarle County Courthouse is in the center of historic Court Square. This building and many surrounding ones are lovely, restored buildings dating back to the early 1800's. An historic delight. Three early US presidents - Jefferson, Monroe and Madison - attended meetings in this building.
We found it while following the Historic Downtown Charlottesville walking tour map. You can pick it up the map at the downtown visitor center. Highly recommended, as it guides you to many historical sites along with short descriptions. Court Square and its surrounding buildings are the highlight of the walking tour.

The buildings located on the courthouse square date from the late colonial period, and provide a look at life in early Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Across from the courthouse is the place where enslaved people were sold at auction.

We enjoyed seeing this historical building and stretching our legs. The building was closed, but we enjoyed the historical significance and were glad we stopped.
