It is this is one of the oldest buildings in Front Royal. We have seen it as a part of our on-foot self-guides tour recommended by the local visitor center. The building has colorful history. Belle Boyd became a Confederate spy before her 18th birthday.

My wife and I visit the Belle Boyd Cottage every time visit Front Royal, Virginia, which is every time we visit the Shenandoah Valley, which is about once every two or three years. Located at 101 Chester Street, near the Warren Rifles Confederate Museum, behind the Ivy Lodge Museum and Gift Shop, it is one of the oldest buildings in this historic town which serves as the gateway to Shenandoah National Park. President Franklin Pierce once stayed in the cottage. So did Gen. Fitzhugh Lee. According to legend, Boyd was staying with relatives in the house during the Civil War when she overheard strategic information being discussed by Union officers and relied the details to Gen. Stonewall Jackson. Also according to legend, the information was useful in Jackson's victory at the battle of Front Royal in 1862. Later, she was arrested six times and imprisoned three times for allegedly serving as a Confederate spy. In recent years, however, other evidence has surfaced to dispute those facts. Some evidence is based on her highly fictionalized narrative of her war experiences she chronicled in a two-volume book titled Belle Boyd in Camp and Prison. But Boyd survived the war, went on to marry three times, had five children and enjoyed an active stage career. Whatever you believe, she was a very interesting personality. And the cottage remains, thanks to the Warren Heritage Society. See for yourself.

Belle Boyd is quite an interesting historical figure. She tried to blackmail Abraham Lincoln and warned Stonewall Jackson of a trap. Our guide Nathan did an outstanding job telling us about Belle and showing us around the cottage. His passion was so contagious we bought a book about Belle!

Not sure how much the story of Belle Boyd, the female confederate spy, might have been embellished but the tour was quite enjoyable. Would definitely recommend this.

Known as the "Belle Boyd Cottage" because of its association with the famous Confederate spy, this is one of the oldest buildings in Front Royal, Virginia. Located at 101 Chester Street, near the Warren Rifles Museum, in a tree-shaded courtyard behind the Fishback Hotel, it was reserved for the proprietor's family and for the most exclusive guests. Among the most notable guests were U.S. President Franklin Pierce and General Fitzhugh Lee. At one time during the Civil War, Belle Boyd was staying with her relatives, who ran the old hotel. When Union officers were quartered in the hotel, the family moved to the little five-room cottage. From there, Belle Boyd overheard strategic information and presented the details to General Stonewall Jackson, who made good used of it during the battle of Front Royal in 1862. She was arrested six times and imprisoned three times. But she survived the war, married three times and had five children. She died of a heart attack at age 56 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, while touring the United States to promote her highly fictionalized narrative of her war experiences in a two-volume book titled Belle Boyd in Camp and Prison.

The cottage was moved to its current location and some of the original interiors were lost, so the feel inside is not completely authentic but still interesting. The Belle Boyd story is the main draw and the tour did a good job of explaining Boyd's activities in Front Royal. Combine this with a tour of the Balthis House next door; it's only $5 for both. Well worth the time and money.

I knew nothing about Belle Boyd when I visited this historic home. She only lived in this house for a little over a year. The house actually belonged to her aunt and uncle and was moved in 1982 from its original location. Belle Boyd was a true rebel and supported the Confederacy. She did lots of questionable things to support the South and was hated by the women of the community. The house is full of period pieces and a few items connected to Boyd. Nathan my guide knew all the stories about Boyd but not much about the pieces inside. Just a little suggestion to work on learning more about the items in the house.

Belle Boyd Cottage is not an earth shaking historical site -- but it is worth a visit. The cottage was home to a female Confederate spy (who sounds like she was quite a character). The cottage is staffed by volunteer docents from the historical society and they take their jobs seriously. I have visited twice, and each time we got a private tour. The docents were a bit different in their focus -- but each wove a great story of the civil war in this part of the Shenandoah Valley and of the life and times of a local spy. In addition to seeing Belle Boyd, you can opt to see a second historic home on your visit that dates to the period that Front Royal was initially settled. Inexpensive, interesting way to pass an hour or so. If you don't have much time, be sure to tell the docent at the beginning of the visit. They will tailor their presentation to your timing. We probably spent an hour and a half looking at the homes and asking questions.

Front Royal Va. Is a treasure trove of finds for those that are driven by history enthusiasm.This is where a female spy resided. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and willing to spend the time to answer all questions.

We went to Front Royal this time, just to see this attraction, because we plan to bring our grandchildren to it next summer. We LOVED seeing this museum. Nelly gave us a fabulous tour of the Belle Boyd Cottage, with an overview of Belle's life before her contribution to Jackson's attack at Front Royal, plus information on her life afterward. She let us look for over an hour, without any sign of impatience. A super, super tour with a super, super guide. Not sure is she is an employee or a volunteer of the Heritage Society, but she was a very engaging and knowledgeable guide.
You get the tickets at the (free) Ivy House Heritage Museum, and then walk around behind Ivy House to see the Boyd Cottage. Plan time also to see the Ivy House.
The Cottage is about 2 or 3 blocks from the Visitor Center / Town parking lot. And a Trolley may run from motels to the visitor center. The trolley appeared to be mainly local public transportation linking certain areas of time with city center / visitor center.
