I play this course annually and have seen a real improvement. The fairways, greens and bunkets are in great shape. While the cart paths are a bit bumpy all else is very nice. Most of the holes are interesting and challenging although i tend to alternative from the white to the blue tees since a few holes are a bit short. The staff is really accomodating and i have yet to be hampered by slow play

The Golden Eagle golf course has improved in a remarkable way. The cart paths have been repaired, the bunkers are back in very good shape, the greens run fast and true and the fairways are rug quality. Working with the community, the Tides Inn has brought this masterpiece golf course back to glory. More importantly, the layout and design are one of the best in Virginia. Big hitters will love playing from the “tips”, which are 7500 yards. Others can move up to their appropriate yardage level. This golf course has returned.

I played late afternoon recently. No one was there so it was a quick round. The fairways were generally in good condition but some of the greens have rot patches. The layout is challenging with several water holes. While they use 150 posts in the center of the fairway I found other yardage markers lacking and with no gps on the cart (my gps watch was in another car) it makes the round more challenging then it needs to be, The trees offer alot shade at that time - I didn't see much of the dreaded flies others mention. In general it was a pretty enjoyable round and for $30 w a cart and quick play it was hard to beat

We had 4 groups play Golden Eagle golf course. The course was in very good condition. We played on a Saturday and the cost was $58.
Course can be tough. Bad issue is the forward tee versus the white tee. Too much difference in yardage.

Me and my wife were staying at the Tides Inn (see my separate review) so she reserved me a tee time at the Golden Eagle for Sunday at 7:30. Reviewing the website, I was quite impressed. Unfortunately, the website in no way managed my expectations. If you are anticipating a resort golf experience, prepare yourself for disappointment.
I woke up at The Tides and went to the front desk to ask them if the Golden Eagle served breakfast. They didn't know. First red flag. How does a "resort" not know if its sponsored golf course serves breakfast? Theoretically, they should know every last thing about it. At any rate, they called the golf course to ask. No answer. Second red flag. So I make my way down there ( a couple of miles or so) . The gravel parking lot was wide open and I appeared to be the only one there. I went inside. The golf pro was putting things together for the day. And was the only employee there. Red flag. I asked him if they served breakfast. He pointed to the snack display with granola bars and cheese crackers. So that was my resort breakfast. Second thing I noticed was the tchotchkes being sold in the pro shop (where golf supplies should be). See my photos. It was a whole set-up. This reinforces my argument that Irvington is not a "resort" locale but a sleepy little quaint
tourist attraction. But let me be clear about something: the pro could not have been nicer or more accommodating. He even brought out a fresh pot of coffee. So, as first out, I got into my cart to begin my 18 holes. I did not see one maintenance person the whole time I was there and it the course showed it. Drainage was terrible and the bunkers held water. There had been a big rain the day prior, which ended mid afternoon. About 9:50 the bugs really started getting fierce. If you stood still for even a second, they surrounded you. The cart path is busted. So many potholes, cracks, eruptions and the like, you better hold on tight. I can say I enjoyed playing the course, which does have some picturesque and challenging holes, but this was a municipal golf course experience, not a resort golf course experience.

I played the golf course which has some interesting holes and lots of sand bunkers and also some water carries. It is pretty and quiet so my wife enjoyed riding with me. It was only $65 because we were staying at the Tides Inn. I am an average golfer (23 handicap) and did not find it that difficult from the White Tees. Lunch in the grill room was excellent with homemade chowder and tomato bisque soups with sandwiches on delicious bread. It seems the grill is the place for lunch after church for many of the locals that we met there.

This is an excellent golf course that is affiliated with the Tides Inn. The layout is interesting, the maintenance is very good, and overall you will have an enjoyable day. The pro shop staff is very accommodating and helpful. The classic holes on the course are No. 5 (a cape design), and No. 9 and 18.

We stayed at the nearby Tides Inn, had booked a tee time and were pleasantly surprised at the reasonable fee. What a fun round of golf we had, with plenty of challenge from the many bunkers, a few water carries, some blind shots and occasional elevation changes. The fairways and greens were in really wonderful condition. Our cart's sand bottles were empty, and we felt kind of bad about not being able to fill in our divots. The asphalt cart paths are quite bumpy from tree roots.
The staff there is excellent. It's playable by many levels, maybe not absolute beginners but middling to expert will enjoy.
We enjoyed lunch afterwards at their terrific restaurant. His brisket sandwich and my Rachel both were delicious and came with cold, crisp coleslaw. His also came with the best onion rings - light coating, hot and crunchy. Our hardworking waitress handled the bustling lunch crowd with good humor.
The dining room features a ceiling with really interesting antique, belt driven fans with ornate ironwork.
The staff there is excellent. It's playable by many levels, maybe not absolute beginners but middling to expert will enjoy.

First time on recommendation from fellow golfers. Easy drive, great course (not for beginners). You can tell this is a long standing tradition in Virginia.
Drove by the Tides Inn, but it's closed until March.
The staff is outstanding and lunch was very good!
Will return to get to know the area. If you want to get away from politics - come to the Golden Eagle in Irvington, VA.

The bones of this golf course reveal it was once a magnificent course. It still plays extremely well and is a golfers course. The fairways are velvet, the greens some what small but true, the cart paths need some work in spots. The food in the restaurant is excellent and inexpensive. It remains one of the prettiest courses on the east coast. Green fees are a bargain for what you get. Serious and mid level golfers must play this course.
