An interesting, inspiring and impressive museum!

We are an English family living in Yorktown and we are keen to learn the history of this land prior to the English landing here in the 1600s. After watching pocahontas with our son, we thought it essential to take him to the pamunkey museum to learn more about the tribe who came into contact with the English.

The museum was incredible! Ethan Brown, the renowned Pamunkey artist and filmmaker, was there to greet us and show us around the museum. He talked through the various stages of the history of the tribe with a complete understanding of all the artifacts. I was very curious about the different items and asked him too many questions to which he answered all of them!

A fascinating history and display was finished off with an impressive gift shop consisting of art and memorabilia created by the Pamunkey residents.

Overall, a very enjoyable experience. We intend on visiting again when family and friends come to visit.

Thank you again, Ethan. We wish you luck on your art and filmmaking career.

Big lessons come wrapped in small packages

The Pamunkey Museum & Cultural Center is located wayyyy out in the country on the Pamunkey Reservation. It is small in size but has allot to show and tell about the heritage of the Pamunkey tribe. Take time to read the captions. Small gift shop. On the day that we were there, the tall, handsome, modest, mild mannered Ethan was “minding the store.” Ethan knows his history and was very interesting to talk with. I would love to hear him give a presentation on the tribal history. While there, also be sure to include time to visit their fish hatchery, pottery school, church, school house and Chief Powhatan's grave.

Interesting small Museum

The Museum is interesting - rather small, though at the time we went there were plans for another exhibit. The Museum shows the history of this tribe. There was a lot of reading. There is a small gift shop in the same building that has some interesting items available. for purchase. It was interesting to learn about this tribe that I knew nothing about.

A nice day trip to learn of Native American Heritage

We really enjoyed a trip out to the Reservation off of Rt. 30 in King William, Virginia! There they had the most interesting displays and information about the tribes in the area. ..and you must go see Chief Powatan's Grave down by the River!

Lesson in history

Went here during a trip to Virginia for Thanksgiving. This is a small museum covering the Pamunkey tribe, but it was still an excellent stop during our trip. The woman working the museum that day was extremely helpful in answering our questions and was able to provide some additional information that made the visit even better. I learned of the tie to Pocahontas and the tradition of the yearly tribute to the Governor of Virginia.

Very informative museum

The museum is located on the Pamunkey Indian Reservation. Despite its small size, the museum is very informative, the artifacts presented in a chronological order - starting from the Ice Age till nowadays. In the end of the exhibition there is a gift shop, presenting wide range of hand-made jewelry and pottery. Admission for adults is 5 dollars.
Don't miss this place!

Small but informative

This museum is located on the Pamunkey Indian Reservation. The museum itself is quite small but has several displays with dozens of artifacts behind plexiglass, so it's great for children with otherwise grabby hands. :) Some of the presentation elements are a bit dated but still convey interesting information. The staff are members of the tribe and are related to many of the individuals portrayed in historic photos displayed throughout. Be sure to ask questions because you'll get to hear some fascinating stories and details you might otherwise miss. There is a small gift shop where visitors can purchase pottery and crafts made by tribe members. Overall, a nice afternoon diversion if you're in the area! Admission is as follows: Adults - $2.50, Children $1.25, Seniors - $1.75 (cash or check only)
