Interesting family history

This is another plantation, but with an extensive and interesting family history attached to it. We spent about 1-1/2 hours on a docent led tour exploring the home. Most of the tour focused on the family and was spent on the lower level of the home. Then the upstairs was pretty much a self-guided tour of the bedrooms. There are terraced gardens, which we didn’t spend much time exploring because it was a warm day and we were hungry. Well worth a visit.

We ended up at Oatland to kill some time, but it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. The site is beautiful. The two mile trail was easily navigated, even in flip flops! Well maintained and a must see when in Savannah.

If you are looking for a 2 hour+ horticultural / architectural / historical outing than I highly recommend a visit to Oatland Plantation in Leesburg VA. Our tour guide Judith - 8th generation American (who’s last name we never knew, but could have been Adams, or Madison, or Jefferson, any of the other Founding Fathers) blended our tour of the extensive gardens with a history of the landscape and each renovated building, its function, as well as its architecture in minute detail. The image she painted left a vivid picture of what life was like on this plantation 200+ years ago. The image was so clear that we fully expected to round a bend or a hedge and come face to face with one of its original owners.

You will not be disappointed!

More than fascinating

We visited Oatlands on a wet Friday afternoon, looking forward to our architectural tour. Judith, our guide, was not daunted by the rain, and we started out with umbrellas. Judith was enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and was able to give us more than just the information about Oatlands' architecture, as she is one of the senior guides and gives all the kinds of tours Oatlands offers. But as an architect herself, she seems to have a special place in her heart for the architecture tour.

Architecture is a good entry into the life and culture of Oatlands, and of George Carter, who built the house and designed the plantation that surrounds it. We learned about the subtle differentiations between doors that the enslaved people used and the doors for the owners and their guests, and about the strikingly different buildings built from the same plans the same year, but by different people. We saw the subtle ways cornices and jutting walls indicated the status of the people who lived at Oatlands.
In all, it was a wonderful tour, and we thank the Oatlands staff for their excellent work.

On a hot Fathers Day

We decided have our picnic on a very hot Fathers Day and take a tour of the mansion, which we found was closed. The garden behind the mansion was nice and worth taking a look. There were hardly any visitors, which was understandable given the weather and folks taking their Dads to restaurants where it is much cooler. Is it worth few hours to half a day? Depends on what you like and what you want to do. It was my first time to see a plantation, and perhaps it was worth it. However, with any plantation, the history may not be sparkling and joyful.

I thoroughly enjoyed my adventure to this historical home. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful too. My favorite part of the tour was exploring the beautifully designed gardens.
