The visitor center and country store were closed. The roads were clear but it had definitely snowed and temperatures were threatening to remain below freezing. Was this really necessary? Yes, and it was amazing. The frozen waterfall was awesome to behold - just a tad slow to get there. The Pinnacles offered views that are the best around - it was stunning. We just scratched the surface of this gorgeous park but what we saw was amazing leaving us with lifelong memories. Highly highly highly recommend!

Totally worth the $7 admission. Easy hike to see the wild ponies. We are planning to go back in the spring and hopefully see baby ponies.

Beautiful State park! Excellent view, and the wild ponies is the best part!! They offer easy trail and hard one too, the rangers are very friendly and helpful. The sign on trail are very informative and you will never get lost.

One of the most breathtaking parks I have visited. Beautiful mountain vistas and wild ponies roaming on the land. Many hiking trails to choose from. Nice welcome center and gift shop.

This is a gorgeous park, well run and maintained. Hiking is wonderful, from short easy hikes to visit the wild ponies to serious multi-day backpacking trips to Mount rogers and the Appalachian Trail. Note that there is not a whole lot else to do in the area and not much in the way of resupply of groceries etc, so be prepared. One particular recommendation is to attend the free weekly Wednesday evening Virginia, traditional music jam at the 1808 Courthouse in Independence, VA. Great fun!

Fantastisch state park met een gamma aan wandelingen om uit te kiezen, van makkelijk naar heel uitdagend. Dé grote uitdaging bestaat erin om de wilde pony's te vinden die zich vrij in het park bewegen. Wij troffen ze op de wandeling naar Mount Rogers, het hoogste punt van Virginia dat zich net buiten het park bevindt. Degelijke gift shop ook waar ze water en gekoelde dranken verkopen, maar zo goed als geen eten. Best op voorhand boodschappen doen voor de picknick.

Our favorite park of all times. We love sitting and watching the wild ponies. We always find them the hike is fun. Sitting up in the mountain rock with wind blowing feels amazing everyone should give that a try

We wanted to check out this state park based on the reviews. If you are an avid hiker, you will definitely enjoy it, however we are not. We parked at the Rhododendron Trail and used the stinky pit toilet then began clambering up and up and up the rugged, rocky, uneven trail to try to get a glimpse of the wild ponies. We climbed about a mile up to where the staffer at the gate told us they usually are where the AT crosses the trail but never saw them. Then began the hike back down. We drove all around and never saw a single staff member, other than the one at the gate where you pay to come in. With no cell service at all and the absence of staff, it was not at all something we enjoyed.

It was a cool day sunny a mile walk to see the wild ponies. There were two colts and they kept walking toward people to pet them.

We are coming to camp for 3 nights in a few weeks from out of state. We have a Ford transit van (it’s tall) and will be pulling a pop up camper trailer. I’m wondering, how are the mountain roads? Think we’ll have problems on any twisty turny passes? Has me nervous, but my husband is an excellent driver.

Are the tent and cabin sites usually booked a year in advance? It looks like there is no availability all summer, but also having a hard time understanding the booking site on my phone.

We had trouble with the website too and ended up calling directly to the park to get clarification. Hope that helps you. We only booked a few months advance and were fine. Good luck it is worth the visit

I am reading that the hike is 2 miles to see the ponies. Is that in and out? Also, moderate meaning? It seems everyone's definition is different. I really want to see the ponies, but I have some lower back issues. Is the incline extreme? Are there other areas to possibly see them that may be easier to access? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

What trails would be best to take children (5-10 y/o) that would not be too difficult to hike, but would still allow fun outlooks or good spots to see the ponies?

Most of the park trails are moderate or difficult but you shouldn't have to hike much to see the ponies. Generally you can see them near the Massie Gap parking lot and the Rhododendron Trail is short and moderate and a good spot to see them. The best advice is to check with staff when you get to the park because they will normally know where they are hanging out. The ponies may appear tame but are wild and can hurt unsuspecting visitors to think they are domesticated so watch from a distance.

If you take the waterfall hiking trail, there is a pretty deep pool at the base of the falls.
Also, there is a big state park/lake about half an hour drive from the area of Grayson Highlands. It is called “Hungry Mother State Park.”

The ponies are there all year round and usually it would be hard to miss them. However, because of the weather conditions, I recommend June-September.
