It is difficult to get directly to what remains of the original kastro, that is to say a tower (under repair) and high stone walls, as there are so many streets in all directions. Beautiful carved marble door and window frames...the cathedral is small with the marble facade and bell tower. Lots of stairs.

Very nice Venetian style castle, worth the climb (also a lovely set of churches of various denominations and little meandering streets and archways surround it).

The Kastro is an impressive looking brown rock walled castle looking from below at the Temple of Apollo. However, when you climb up the hill on the narrow alleys, there is really not that much to see. My wife and I tried to go at it from a couple of different alleyways but did not successfully arrive at a place that allowed us to see much.

C'est très beau et très intéressant. C'est pas compliqué à trouver, c'est en haut , vous la verrez quand vous arrivez en ferry. Vous vous perdrez certainement au début mais comme c'est petit c'est pas grave vous retrouverez vitre chemin

My wife and myself are currently holidaying in Naxos and one Attraction I was looking to see was Naxos Castle.
A straightforward enough task one would have thought but, in practice, there is a total absence of any signage and the Penny begins to drop there is no Castle to see!! As such, I wasn’t very impressed although the surrounding area (ie where the Castle previously existed) is pleasant enough - just as well as my overall marking would have been even lower!

Before going up the steps to the Kastro it makes sense to have a look at it from the Temple of Apollo. There one will see above the whitewashed houses of the Bourgos part of Naxos' old town a ring of massive palace-style buildings, that are not painted white. All these stone mansions around the top of the hill are connected to each other, leaving only three not very big gates to enter the 'castle'.
The urban planning here is very typical for Venice, thus being more in the style of a fortified village, with the outer houses forming the defensive wall as we can well see also at the Kastro of Sifnos, Folegandros, Sikinos, Kimolos or Antiparos. Only that here in the former capital of the 'Ducato dell'Archipelago', founded in the 13th century by Marco Sanudo, all is much grander.
Once inside the castle area, which is much more quiet than the Bourgos further down, there are the usual narrow alleys, sometimes partly covered, and small squares. To be seen here are the Roman Catholic Cathedral at the Mitropolis Square, where there is also the ruin of the Sanudo Tower. In better state and under renovation, when I passed by, is the Crispi-Glezos Tower by the port gate. Above the doors and gates of the palaces are often the coat-of-arms of various families of Venetian descent.
The Jesuits had a school for boys up here, which later - under the Salesians - became a School of Commerce (1891-1927), which had been attended also by novelist Nikos Kazantzakis. It now houses the Archaeological Museum. Opposite it is was the former Ursulines School for girls, closed in 1973. In there one will find now the handicraft shop 'Apodo' ('from here') and the 'Cafe 'Avaton 1739' (referring in its name to the year the girl's school had been founded) with a a terrace offering fantastic views.

Bello questo castello sopra una rocca, passeggiando all'interno delle mura del castello si trovano negozietti di artigianato, caffetterie, il museo archeologico, e anche un ristorante da cui si gode un ottimo paesaggio sulla città
