The Virginia countryside is conducive to cultivating grapes for wine 🍷and you’ll find vineyards all across the state. There was just something about #ThirdHill that made us choose this one and I’m so glad we did.
This beautiful vineyard in the #ShenandoahValley is run by a lovely couple - kind and comfortable to be around. They allow you to bring your own food and of course, you take the wine from them. You can opt for a glass or whatever or a flight comprising 4 or 8 wines.
Typically it shuts at 5, but we were told we could clear our checks and sit out on the deck for as long as we chose. We were even taken into the cellar exclusive to privileged members. Now that’s going the extra mile to keep your customers happy

This winery is in a beautiful location and the property is very pretty and tastefully done. Our plan was to have a relaxing Saturday afternoon - sipping a bottle of wine and playing cards. Unfortunately, staff asked us to check out after preparing our wine flight and we were not offered any additional wine or food. (An inside menu mentions a cheese tray). 😞. We have been to many (most) nearby wineries and I honestly would recommend a visit to Cave Ridge instead.

My husband and I were on our way back from a hike and detoured the longer way home so that we could stop at a winery off of 81, because we rarely venture that far out from Northern Virginia for an afternoon visit. The weather was perfect and other couples with puppies approached us, one of which specifically referenced how wonderful it is being out here but that they didn't feel very comfortable, given all the signage on the roads nearby. They thought about escaping DC to continue staying at their beautiful little Airbnb but decided against it with everything that's going on with the election. A father-daughter act was playing jazz as we arrived and the crowd was really getting into it so we bought a bottle of rose and found a comfortable spot with Adirondack chairs underneath an umbrella next to a fire pit, so it seems like the place would probably be nice at night, too. After they finished the set and their break they came back with the song that the lead singer acknowledged was probably inappropriate given the environment but he apparently has been working on it for over 4 years and sometime in the last week he found the inspiration to finish it, "and to hell with it." He proceeded to sing a song about 1864, glorifying the dead of a certain VMI class. We packed up our things and left but not before telling the bar keep the reason for our departure and how much better the music was when it was classy and jazz not this hateful obnoxious... I won't say more. Who knows if this band will be back, or what
action the proprietors will take, but be advised before you make the hike about where it is located and what the locals think.

Third Hill Winery at DeMello Vineyards takes pride in being an inclusive establishment. We invite all to come enjoy our winery. I understand that one song was played about the history of the area that may be offensive. We did not know the content of this song before it was played. This experience will make us more conscientious and aware about the songs our musicians will play. As for the climate and signage in our community, we have no control over that. It pains us that anyone would have a bad experience at our winery and will do anything to amend that.

We have a summer home in Va. and the first place we like to visit is the beautiful
Third Hill at Demello Vinyards! Eddy and Wendy, the owners, are the most friendly
people we know. They treat you like family. They both are hard working and does most of the making of wine, keeping the grounds beautiful and make you feel welcome!
The scenery is amazing! The entertainment is always great fun and relaxing as you are sipping on their amazing wines! Can't wait to get back to Va.!

We had a wonderful afternoon at DeMello Vineyards. The live entertainment was perfect; the main singer had a great voice, sang familiar songs and the volume was just right that we could hear the songs, but still talk to our friends. The people at the vine tasting were very knowledgeable. The vine was good, but we are a little spoiled by having excellent Costco vines at very low prices. it was neat to see the grapes almost ready to be picked. The overall event/experience deserves 5 stars, but I don't go to local vineries expecting superior vines.

When we are in the Shenandoah Valley, we try to hit a different winery every day. Third Hill at DeMello was one of our stops this year, and we are so glad we did. We enjoyed every one of the wines on the tasting, and purchased several bottles. The owners, especially Wendy, were super nice and we enjoyed the conversation and atmosphere as much as the wine. Definitely going back!

Besides the beautiful grounds/tasting room, you can sit with the actual wine maker/owner (Ed DeMello) & enjoy his fine wines. Interesting Ed's an engineer turned wine marker who learn the trade by trial/error. You wouldn't know it from the quality of the wines which were good/excellent. Personally more of a red wine drinker & really enjoyed the Cabernet Franc/Petit Verdot. Overall beautiful place with good wines & friendly dog (Jacks the Jack Russell Terrier) who will greet you at the door.

Yes, it's a vineyard, with many excellent wines. But the grounds are lovely and there is plenty of room for kids to run and play. Live music as well.

I visited third hill this weekend with two friends. We’re all fairly young (22/23) and I got the impression that they were not excited about having us due to our age. I’ve been to a dozen or so wineries in the area so I know what to expect. First of all, when we arrived there were already 6 people at the bar about to start a tasting. The owner was there and he said just to go on the end and join in with them. So we had 9 people total for one tasting? I’ve never done one with more than 4 people. I would have rather waited a few minutes to have our own separate tasting. Another group came in a few minutes after us and the owners wife served them. I hypothesize because of our age we weren’t “worth” doing a tasting on our own. During the tasting, the owner never once looked at my friends and I, he seemed to be only speaking to the other groups there and we were just expected to listen and follow along. Since the tasting was a big group, it took awhile for wines to be poured and tasted so naturally my friends and I broke into side conversations while we waited. At one point we did not notice the owner was about to start explaining the next wine. Instead of nicely grabbing our attention by letting us know, he rudely says to us “are you going to listen?” As if I’m in sixth and talking when my teacher is explaining a lesson. I’m a paying customer, I understand we should have been more aware he was about to speak but that crossed the line. I think he felt bad after that as he interacted with us for the first (and only) time by asking us where we are from.
In general, I thought the wines were pretty good & the location was very lovely. Just disappointed by the hints of age discrimination we faced.

Hi! Thank you for your review. We absolutely don’t discern between young and old, we love serving everyone, if you got that impression, we need to work on our eye contact when we serve. Most groups that come in are eager to step up to the bar and start their tasting instead of waiting, and we assumed you and your group wanted to begin. We have absolutely no problem with a group requesting to wait. Memorial Weekend is a very busy weekend and I myself will handle 3 or more tastings at one time, and to be honest, we love the younger people, they are a lot of fun to interact with. We will endeavor to engage with everyone on our next busy day, hope you’ll give us another chance.

Of the wineries that I have visited, Third Hill was pretty quiet. It was a rainy weekend, though. The winemaker/owner did our tasting for us, so he was able to tell us a lot about the wines and how he had made them. The grounds were nice, and there was a pavilion outside, along with seating inside and on the deck. We enjoyed our tasting, and a pitcher of sangria, along with the picnic lunch we brought along. They offer live music on some weekends as well.
