A rough road wound us up to the small parking area and trailhead. Luckily it was late in the day and there were only a few cars remaining. We had just enough daylight to get up to the top, take a few pics, and back to the car. Maybe a little too late in the season to see the whole array of wild flowers, but there were still many to enjoy in August. A good workout navigating all the switchbacks.

This hike up a trail not far off a route 20 in Skagit County may offer one of the last accessible hikes before winter sets in.
As many of the trailheads become difficult to access owing to snow and ice, a venture up Sauk Mountain may give you that sense of accomplishment, as well as some great views of Glacier Peak, Mount Ranier (top only) and Mount Baker. A few miles east of Concrete you'll find the turnoff on the left for Mount Sauk Road. Take this and the pretty good road (you don't need an SUV -- in fact, does one ever is my usual feeling -- ) will take you about 7.5 miles up to the trailhead. Compared to some of the other roads or "off-roads" to the trailheads in the Cascades, this one is relatively panic-free, but you will need a vehicle with higher clearance (like a Subaru -- Washington state's favorite). Only the last 500 yards of the road have some big gullies and potholes, be careful here.
As to the trail itself, it is a series of switchbacks on the south side of the mountain, clearly visible from the road up, and in about 100 minutes you will reach the saddle by the main peak, good place for a picnic. The views up are wonderful.
From the parking lot to the saddle is a gain of 1200 feet. It is doable.
If you start in the morning, or plan a hike (including driving) to last most of the afternoon, there will be no time issues. Remember the sun will set sooner now.
When we hiked up last week, there was a little snow on some parts of the trail, but you won't fly off into eternity.

This is why WA state is called Switzerland of America! From the parking lot to the top the stunning view never end. We saw wild flowers at the end of August. No problem with bugs. Choose a clear sunny day to do this hike as the view from the top is unbelievable. Mt Baker in front of you, Mt Rainier in the distance, all the Cascade Mountains. It is breathtaking 360 degree view. It is worth all the trouble you go through to get there.

What a great switchback trail. The views start from the time you park. The road up which is 7+ miles is a royal pain, potholes and tight in some spots. But once you get there and do the hike you will realize how worth it it was. The views at the top are unbelievable and as you hike up the switchbacks the views just get better and better as you go up. We didn5 have time to hike down to the lake being we go5 a late start so plan a early start. The parking area is small so get there early. I wo7ld definitely do this h8ke again only in July when 5h3 flowers ar3 in bloom.

The road to the trail head is rough (potholes) and a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. I was blown away by the endless switchbacks that climb up the near vertical slope. They make it easy to gain elevation, but they are not for people who are afraid of heights. A slip off the narrow trail could result in serious injury or death. Reading about several deaths that had occurred in the last two years, almost made me change my mind about attempting this hike, but I'm glad I didn't give in to my fears. The hike is very beautiful for sure-footed hikers.

Did this hike again today. The weather was less than stellar, lots of low clouds, and not warm enough to call summer, but the hike is still outstanding! It is still a bit early for the full glory of the wildflowers on this exposed mountainside, but the ones that were out were colorful and all along the trail. The views of the lush green mountainside are glorious and spectacular with or without the wildflowers. The long pot-hole rich road up to the trail head is a royal pain, but the hike and the scenery at the top are SO worth the struggle to drive up.

The dirt road drive is slow and narrow. Was there Aug 12. Bugs bugs bugs. Biting flies not just in the parking lot, entire trail. BUG SPRAY NECESSARY. challenging hike worth every step, pokes and good shoes necessary.

The drive up is long and windy on a gravel road. Once.at parking lot and trailhead there is a restroom and good views. About 30 switchbacks get you to the summit. Killer views. Note to self ... Next time also plan to go to the mountain lake.

I have hiked tons of National Parks, and in multiple states and countries, and I can say confidently that this trail is one of my favorites. It's incredible! Know going in that Sauk Mt Rd is HORRIBLE. Push through. It's worth it. Giant potholes big enough to take a bath in. Hundreds of them. Just go slow. The trail itself is tough because it's vertical and full of switchbacks on an exposed slope. Push through--it's so worth it! The entire mountain is covered (COVERED!) in wildflowers, and you have views of the river valley, Mt Baker, and the Cascades the entire time. Just about the most rewarding approach I've ever done. At the top, you have the most incredible 360 view. Mountains for DAYS. I've been thinking about it constantly ever since we left Washington. A must-do in the Cascades area, in my opinion.

This hike is beautiful when the wildflowers are out and they definitely were! Multiple colors, varieties--absolutely stunning! The hike itself is a ton of long lazy switchbacks--you really don't sense that you are steadily climbing because the ascent is so easy. We only had intermittent views because there was so much cloud cover, but the views were very worth it when they did momentarily appear.
The drive up to the trail head is another story, a multiple mile slog along a very narrow, rutted dirt road.
