Dale and Erika run the best kite school around. They are focused completely on you the customer, you become part of their kiting community and they are dedicated to providing you with the best experience with IKO certified team of instructors. They are so committed to your success, offer the best packages and want you to succeed while having fun. I have had the best time learning to kite with SA Kitesurf.

I highly recommend SA Kitesurf Adventure Kiteboarding School. I was up riding in a weekend!
Coming from Seattle they were very flexible with the schedule and warned us in advance when the conditions were predicted to be not good for the first session, I opted to do a back to back afternoon and evening session on Saturday, which they didn’t recommend but I was stubborn because family came to watch. In retrospect it would have been better to move to another day or have at least a longer break between sessions. Because my brain knew what to do (thanks to Dale over the radio in the helmet) just my arms and legs were jelly by the second session. Whereas on the Sunday morning session I wasn’t as tired.
Dale was an awesome instructor. He has a calm reassuring voice like Crocodile Dundee when you’re about to panic. As well as having knowledge and tricks to learning that I had not seen anywhere on YouTube. I came in thinking I wasn’t going to learn more than what I already saw but I was very wrong and the instant situational feedback made me progress so much faster.
The equipment was great. The radio headset were a must when taking a class. I wouldn’t have thought that the zodiac would be as well. However it was because the zodiac made it so we could go way upwind in the deep water for nice long downwind runs where you’re up on the board, as it is whole another level to ride upwind. Without the zodiac you would have to walk upwind with the kite for every run, giving you less time, energy and distance to practice.
The Lyle location with its wide flat waist deep sand bar worked great for the first part of learning to control the kite with one hand while getting your feet on the board and getting the beginning water start. A short crowded beach like Hood River would have been a lot harder and less safe.
The photo option is well worth it too, all attached were taken by Dale.

I have been really scared about taking lessons and being a beginner at the Hood River event site. I choose SA because they launch from Lyle, WA onto a sandbar so you have lots of space to learn without the crowds at the event site. I took a series of lessons with John and can't say enough about him (He's climbed Everest, so if anyone could teach me, it was he!). My main concerns were getting confident and and learning safely. He was insanely patient and had a great sense of humor with me. He pushed me to add skills, but never let me move on without going over safety. i also really appreciated that they are the only kitesurf company out of Lyle that are doing lessons legally at the Lye sandbar by taking students to the sandbar by boat - not across the railroad tracks. The whole crew at SA - Dale, Erica, Ed and Zulu were all invested in my successes each day.

Excellent instruction and I highly recommend Dale and his instructors ! Don’t go anywhere else! Except for Florida or South Africa in the offseason for a session with Dale and SA Kitesurf... hope to see you and Erika again!

Why pick SA Kitesurf? Location, instruction, safety. The Lyle sandbar is big and it’s shallow and not crowded. Safe! Dale, the owner was our instructor. His wife Erika is also great! He takes you to the sandbar by boat thereby not breaking any Wa laws about walking across the RR track. Easy! Inflate, launch, wade out and learn. My wife and I are a bit older and didn’t want to deal with the Hood River crowds or jet skis. The Lyle sandbar is perfect. He worked us through all of the safety aspects of flying the kite. You will feel good about your skills before and after hitting the water. Constant, patient instruction (we needed that). Very easy going. Good, free camping nearby. Easy to get to Hood River or the Dalles if you need some nightlife or groceries.

Had great time with Dale during a nearly 3 hr private lesson. Improved my toe side movement and finally understood the technique for the simple jumps (albeit few of those did not go as planned). Dale notices very well all details, even if you ride at a distance, and gives very practical and useful tips that have an immediate impact on the riding technique. Very impressive. The location is very good, as it has plenty of shallow water space and only a handful of riders as compared with Hood River main riding point. The downside is the lack of basic infrastructure such as changing rooms, etc.
Dale pays a lot of attention to the safety technique and checks on all your practical skills (including body dragging, etc.) prior to letting you ride the kite. My wife had a simultaneous private lesson with Jeremy, who was very scrupulous and attentive to all the details of a beginner (it was her first lesson). Unfortunately, as the wind picked up to over 30 knots, she could not start the practical direction of the kite though. Pity we did not have time for a follow up lesson.

Dale is a great kiteboarding instructor. I'm looking forward to one more refresher lesson this spring before I go out on my own again.
I've heard nothing but good reviews from others who've choosen to get the full SAK experience.

I couldn't have asked for a better experience learning how to kiteboard! I enjoyed the solo lesson, but I had even more fun taking a lesson with 1 other student and learning from each others mistakes. Dale the instructor was very patient, did a great job explaining and demonstrating, and emphasized safety. It is a challenging sport, but totally worth it! I'm so thankful I took a few lessons with Dale!

When I was planning to visit the Portland area, I wanted to see a lot of what the area had to offer, but since I had never been to Northwest, let alone Oregon/Washington or Portland before, I wanted to have someone in the know show me what awesome there was to be had. I wanted something casual and conversational not something "touristy." Something that felt like visiting a friend and having them show you around this place that they loved. When I found SA Kitesurf's Gorge Sampler, it seemed perfect. A gorge tour AND kitesurfing? Sign me up! It was awesome. I felt like I got a nice sampling of the gorges and some hikes, that I got to experience some local flavor and go places I wouldn't have thought to visit on my own. I got to try kitesurfing and I felt like I got to know Dale and Erica and the people on the tour with me. It really did feel like spending a day hanging out with friends while seeing the sites and trying new things. I'd totally visit them again when next I'm in the area. I've got more kitesurfing to learn after all!!
