If you’re a science geek at all, or enjoy movies with huge radio telescopes, this is a must-visit. We did the bus tour, which takes you right up to the telescope. No phones allowed, so no photos. If you go, bring a film camera or buy one at their gift shop before the bus tour.
We then did the “High Tech Tour.” It’s a behind-the-scenes tour that required a background check in advance.
They only do this once a month and we happened to be there on the day, so we took advantage of it. It was, how shall I say, very high tech. An engineer or scientist does the tour, and assumes the people on the tour are also engineers or scientists. I’m an engineer, and I understood most of what they talked about, but my brain hurt by the end. Sharon is neither scientist nor engineer, but she says she was still entertained.

We took the SETI tour and for the geek it is a must do tour. You get to get up close and personal with many of the telescopes. It was very eat to get up to the 140m (BIG) telescope and actually see it moving. The tour concludes with a talk by one of their astronomers in a lounge where, I think is their visiting scientist quarters. It was a great talk at an appropriate level of technicality for the general public. It was an afternoon well spent.
Recommendations: Arrive early. There is a great inter active activity area to learn about radio astronomy. However some area need some love, which is hard for a cash strapped organization. Also walk the grounds. There is so much more to beyond the big dishes.
Just a note the regular tour is just a drive by of the telescopes. You do not get to get up close and personal.

Did not take the bus tour. Lots of neat hands on things to do in the exhibit area. Lots of explanation of what they do on site and what it means. And it was free to go in the exhibit area

An interesting learning experience about telescopes of all kinds and their uses and users. The museum is looking a little bit dated, but still well maintained and informative. I recommend the self guided walking tour to see the massive Green Bank Telescope.

There is a large visitor center with lots of really good exhibits. A regularly scheduled bus tour takes visitors around the complex to view the main telescopes at a distance. Your smartphone must be turned off since this is a no-radio area.

Ya know I would have been happy to go again. The first time was fantastic. However, this time Our group that is planning a trip there soon called because of their covid rules, well like everywhere else in this world Covid has brought out the worst in people. So, our group was planning a trip, and one of the adults called in because he is not vaccinated for Covid due to medical reasons. (And yes, he has a note from his doctor). He talked to someone there, and the person was very rude and told him "I am not going to get into this with you; if you are not vaccinated then you cannot come." all that was asked was in they could explain why there is a requirement for this vaccination and not all others. The point is not that it is a requirement; the issue was that the employee there was so rude and VERY unprofessional. I really think that if you are going to have people that work with the public, they need to learn customer service. This employee needs to be fired and never work in public service ever. Typically, I would give a lot of grace, but in this case, there was no need to be this level of mean therefore I cannot justify any grace for this person. All he needed to do is talk and have an adult conversation. But I guess if this is the type of people the Green Bank Observatory is going to hire and be ok with representing them, then I will not go. Which is very sad as my little one LOVES science and space.

I took my husband to Green Bank as part of his birthday trip. He and I really enjoyed the day. We did the bus tour and the SETI tour. It was very interesting and we got to get up close and personal with the Telescpoes and especially the GBT....it is gigantic. the SETI tour allowed us to go inside of some of the older telescopes and get inside the gate with the GBT. Wow what a thrill>>>>>This is the QUIET ZONE so no electronics are allowed on the tours. Our GPS did get us there without any trouble. A must do if you are there in the area.

This is definitely a "do not miss". My husband and I spent a week in West Virginia and this was on our list along with many natural wonders in the state. We took the tour--changed somewhat due to COVID. It began with a presentation in the auditorium then moved outside where we boarded a bus that took us past older telescopes beginning with the Jansky Antenna used in the early 1930s which found cosmic static and the rest is history. We drove past at least eight other telescopes--larger and larger and newer and newer and finally we came to the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope the largest fully steerable telescope in the world that stands at 485 feet above ground level and its dish has a diameter of 300 feet. It is the SETI radiotelescope used to listen for extraterrestrial life. All this is located in the National Radio Quiet Zone. No cameras, cell phones or fitbits allowed. Also notice the scale model of the solar system beginning with the sun in front of the Jansky Lab and ending 1.5 miles away at the Green Bank Telescope. You can also take a self guided walking tour but whichever one you choose, don't miss this.

It is hard to miss the absolutely massive satellite dish as you are driving down the road. We did not even know that this site was there when we planned our vacation. We were driving and saw it on the side of the road. This location has several things to see to include a visitors center, a self-guided tour, and a guided tour. The entire site is in the middle of a “Quiet Zone” that covers a large portion of the area meaning that your radio and cell phone coverage is probably severely limited so bring a map or download the map for the area to your phone. The visitor’s center was at the front of the site. You enter through the gift shop. Entry was about $5/person. They show you a film about the observatory history and the quiet zone. The timeline and history are displayed on the walls near the film auditorium. There is a wonderful science center with several hands-on displays to include a thermal camera, pulsar simulator, 3-d star map, and more. It was fascinating. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. This site also has a small cafeteria that has an excellent boxed lunch deal. We ordered a boxed lunch and the lady that made it brought it out to us when we had moved to another portion of the building. Afterward, you can go outside and get closer to the large telescopes or, if you pay and schedule it, you can get on the guided tour but with no active electronics. Overall, it is an absolutely great place to visit and I highly recommend it to fellow travelers for the site, the staff, and the price.

Interesting stop if you're a science geek. Was disappointed that our stop was on a day that they were closed for tours, but they do provide a map at a kiosk at the visitor center, which you can use for a nice walking tour.

Are battery operated items like a camera that uses film, and a battery operated alarm clock ok to bring for scout weekend?

I assume it is cash only or can we use debit card? Will be there in a few weeks & don't normally carry cash.
We have an ATM on site, take debit or credit, and of course cash is always accepted!
Where do you stay in Green Bank?

I'm a nighttime photographer and am interested in shooting the Big Tel from a distance like in the longer parking lot just up from the visitors center and before the security gates. Is it OK to stop and park around 2 am or overnight and get some long exposures?
A long-exposure shot from the parking lot and/or observation deck is absolutely possible! Just do not go past the security gates or down the hill from the parking lot. If you would like to get a little closer, please contact the Observatory. During the summer, the telescope is at maintenance and we allow photographers to get a little closer - with prior permissions, of course! Please contact the Observatory through their Media office (Media tab on the Web site).
How far away from the GBT do I need to be before I can use my digital camera? It's a canon eos 20d.

When you take the tour, the bus will stop for a photo opportunity when you will be able to use your camera. After that, it’s no photo.

Are disposable cameras allowed?
Sherry M
Green Bank, เวสต์เวอร์จิเนีย
They sure are! In fact, you can even use a disposable camera, or any film camera to take pictures behind the gates in the telescope zone. So, if you want an up-close picture with any telescope, this is the way to do it. Thank you so much for asking!

Why can you not take digital pictures on the bus tour part? That's all I have now days.

Since the interference from the digital camera fouls their data stream, one digital picture taken at the wrong moment could ruin someone's research - not a fun prospect. Taking a digital photo at Green Bank would be similar to allowing visitors of a major optical telescope (Mauna Kea, for example) to shine flashlights on the mirror of the telescope. At least the researchers allow us on the premises - which I think is pretty cool. The fact that Green Bank is a working astronomical telescope adds to the great benefit of the tour.

We are going to stop next Sunday morning on our way to ride the Durbin Rocket at 2:30pm with two grandsons (4 and 8), If we arrive at 10am, will that give us enough time to see everything and take the 11am tour? Do we need reservations for the tour? Thanks.

I don't think you need to make reservations for the tour, which follows a short video in the theater. The museum has many interesting hands-on exhibits. You may find yourselves wishing for more time in order to enjoy all the exhibits to the fullest extent as the roads to Cass are somewhat curvy and may require reduced travel speeds and extended travel time to get there. The museum also has cafe fare, if you were planning to eat lunch there. Suggest calling the museum for specific details.
Hi ,
I am planning a visit , would like to know if half day enough to see the GBO, or should make it an entire day visit ?I was planning on squeezing some driving time for that day.

Hi Nish,
A half day visit would be perfect. Right now, our tours are offered at 11am, 1pm and 3pm everyday except Tuesday and Wednesday. Beginning Memorial Day weekend, tours are offered every day at the top of the hour from 9am-6pm (that's 10 tours a day!). We have beautiful walking trails, a hands-on exhibit hall, gift shop and a wonderful cafe serving fresh house-made pizzas and more. My recommendation is to come explore the exhibit hall, enjoy a lunch out doors at our picnic tables, take a tour and then explore the grounds. Thank you for your interest in visiting!
How much does it cost to get in?
Sherry M
Green Bank, เวสต์เวอร์จิเนีย
Hi!
Entrance to the science center and exhibit hall is free. If you choose to do a tour, tickets are $6/adults, $5/seniors and free for kids 10 & under and Veterans/Active Service Members. In total, the tour takes about an hour and is the most popular way to learn about the GBT and the science we do.
