I love, love, loved the architecture, the mosaic tiled floors, the history, the displays, the lighthouse in the children's room, the beautiful painted glass window, the book sale and even the cafe!

Popped in to check out some reference books late on a Saturday morning and was so impressed by the helpful staff. It's been years since I visited this library and I plan to go there again after Covid.

I really loved how charming the lobby was for Christmas. I appreciated how active the library was--I can tell it's a resource for the community. Nice library workers helped me get a card, find check outs. Loads of space, nothing cramped about this location.

The best part about the downtown library is that it's open every day. The mosaic tile floor in the vestiblule is a work of art. The marble stairway is beautiful too as well as the marble stairways just past the lobby. Per the library website: Visitors to the Central Library may take a variety of tours of areas normally unavailable to the public. On Sunday, visitors can tour the rotunda Dome and the Old Board Room. On Saturday, visitors can also view the Green Roof and the 4th floor offices and workrooms that formerly served the Museum.

Another of Milwaukee’s monumental public buildings still active in its original use – in this case, as the central branch of the Milwaukee Public Library network. This building was built in a French/Italian Renaissance Revival style in 1895 by Ferry & Clas, a local architectural firm. You can’t help but feel impressed as you climb the grand staircase and enter through the large doors. Directly above you is a huge domed ceiling; directly below you an ornate mosaic floor made by Italian craftsmen. The marble columns and staircases are equally impressive. After you continue on from this lobby into the main portion of the library, you walk into a contemporary library setting with all the modern amenities you’d expect. This was a good place for me to rest for a bit and charge my phone during a long day of walking and exploring the city. The library is a half-mile west of the river on W Wisconsin Ave, so if you want to visit it, it’s about a 15-minute walk or a 5-min bus ride from downtown. I recommend doing it, though. You can always pair a visit to the library with a visit to the nearby Milwaukee Public Museum.

Nice to look at on the outside. Not as much to look at on the inside. We stayed around 15 minutes. We went for the architecture anyway so we were pleased.

Definitely stop into the library - what a beautiful building! The lobby is gorgeous - looks like a basilica! Wish we could have spent more time there - it is huge.

On my to-do when I visited Milwaukee’s was a visit to the city's central library, which I knew from my travel-scouting was a historic 1890s gem. As it happened, it was just a few blocks away from my hotel, Hilton City Center. And it is AMAZING. Not only in terms of its architecture and its state of preservation (including sensitive remodeling, upgrading, expansion), but as a very fine library serving the city and its people. Besides the spectacular lobby, staircases, etc. the meat and potatoes parts of the library that are used by patrons, as opposed to lobbies and corridors, but those facilities were fantastic in terms of design and usefulness. The library includes a large children's department, a used bookstore / cafe, and historic exhibits. All free!
