I visited the zoo on Nov. 12 and must disagree with a couple of recently posted negative reviews. I've been visiting Shalom twice a year for over 10 years, and I would never support an animal park that did not take care of its animals properly. I have always found the staff, including the admissions people, very friendly and knowledgeable about the park, have never seen deer stuck in mud up to their knees or cages without water. The comment about the animals reacting to the golf carts could be that they are responding to the grain guests can buy to feed the deer and elk. The zoo is currently building a new black bear exhibit that appears to be 10-15x bigger than their current cage and will contain a pool. (The negative reviews didn't mention the absolutely beautiful brown bear exhibit.) The reviewers failed to mention the extremely large exhibits for the deer, bison, wolves, brown bears, tigers, cougar, llamas and other animals...the exhibits can be measured in acres, not in square feet.
As for the smaller animal exhibits, I have seen continuous improvement each year with giving them larger and more naturalistic exhibits...this year the mink went from a small sterile cage to a 4x larger exhibit with grass, rocks, logs and other natural materials. I do realize that some of the small to mid-size animals (fox, coyote, lynx) are in basic cages and I too would like to see them in larger and more naturalistic exhibits. Part of the problem is the wide use of chain link fencing to build their exhibits, which may be cheap and expedient but doesn't allow the animals to be seen in their natural beauty and makes a poor contrast to the lovely large exhibits of the larger animals. But I am also confident that the zoo's owners will address this as best and as soon as they can...they recently opened up a whole new area of the zoo beyond the bison pasture which might allow for more spacious exhibits for these animals in the near future.
I would suggest to Trip Adviser readers who are considering visiting Shalom Wildlife to read all the reviews (the majority are overwhelmingly positive) and the photos show how green and forested the park is. I think this is a very special place, and yes there is definitely room for improvement, but I plan to continue visiting the park for years to come to view wildlife in a setting you won't find anywhere else and to see the improvements they make each year.

This is the saddest most depressing "zoo". It's not a zoo. It's not a sanctuary. It's an animal hoard of animals who are not taken care of. The staff when you check in is very unpleasant, unhelpful and young with no answers about the facility. Is there a map? I was told I could take a picture of the one on the wall. What kind of turtles are these (asking about the ones kept in the building). Answer from them: some kind of turtle. Thanks. We drove the path and saw one filthy tiny enclosure after another. These animals are distressed. The sounds of the golf carts startled them every time one went by. The cages are so small. Water was not readily available for them and those that HAD water had muddy water. Seeing the deer in muck up to their "knees", hardly able to walk. A badger who had given up on life in cage by himself. Depressed foxes just staring out to nothing. A parrot losing his feathers due to stress. Two black bears with stacked picnic tables as their climb on toys. Eating whatever candy some jerks kid threw in the cage. It broke my heart and I am disgusted that I gave them any money for this. This place needs to be shut down. One after the other, these animals looked as though their spirits were broken. The operators of this facility should be ashamed and shut down. This place is inhumane.

We have been to Shalom so many times and each time is like a new, special experience. And we talk about it for weeks afterward. Wonderful people and outstanding facility. Be sure to follow them on FB. They do an awesome job posting videos, stories, and explanations of the animals; it’s like a personal backstage pass and you will come to love the animals. Shalom is a special place for our family.

The staff are very rude and inconsiderate. They called security on my dad for asking questions about their golf cart rental policy. Very dishonest and clearly do not care about customers.

This place just discussed me. Animals with no shade in tiny cages pacing for your enjoyment. Water green not fresh for your enjoyment. No shade for animals, for your enjoyment. Bears pacing in tiny cages with putrid water, for your enjoyment. Yeah this place is great, we treat our dogs better and if we treated like this place they would take them away. What, what do people think this OK on any level, what is the matter with people who think this place is cool, I don't get it, I really don't. Can't you see the bears in tiny cages, for your enjoyment, would you do this to your dog. After one visit I just wanted to cry for the animals and you give it stars. Jeez humans discust me if they think this place is nice. What the fck.

The overall experience was fun but most of the animal enclosures were small. The deer and Brown Bears had the biggest enclosures. The Black Bears had incredibly small enclosures, they were pacing and looked visibly distressed. The golf carts were very convenient though.

Shalom is a roadside view that cages large wild animals in far to small enclosures. I strongly discourage people from patronizing any roadside zoo. The black bears and the lynx are in alarmingly small pens and show the signs of mental strain in their pacing and panting. Worse, these awful cages are within regulation. The bears were bred at the notorious Yellowstone Bear World—where bears are threatened with beating—then shipped to an animal exhibitor in Illinois, then Animal Entertainment in Wisconsin, then Shalom, all in the matter of five days.
DO NOT contribute to animal suffering by patronizing this and other roadside zoos.

This is different from the average zoo. There is a four mile long gravel road to walk, or rent a golf cart, that goes around the zoo. Most of the animals are in large natural habitats. We were there early and many of them were active and moving about, which was nice.

The place mades me sad, bears in tiny cages with putrid water, no shade for animals in July. This is a horrid place, almost cried. And ya get to pay for this.

Has anyone been here using crutches? I broke my foot and I'm super worried about uneven dirt paths to the golf cart point, and then getting into a golf cart. Can anyone share experience?

$8 for adults. I cannot remember the child rate. And the golf cart if you would like one is $20. Not necessary if you wish to walk. But with the distance makes it more fun.

Are you open Monday labor day? Do you still rent carts for handicap elderly having trouble walking? Do you have any birthday packages fora 6 year old?

They do rent still rent carts. They are open on Monday from 10-5. Maybe by contact them it was meant to send a note on their link contact us!
