Great whale watching experience!

It was our first time on a whale watching tour, and we enjoyed our trip. Captain Dan is clearly very experienced and we enjoyed his stories.

We saw three humpbacks and some spinner dolphins. For me, hearing one of the whales through an underwater microphone was almost better than seeing them! It was a spiritual experience.

Make sure to get there as early as you can. Our reservation was for 11, but we left closer to 10:30.

Underwhelming experience

We were told to arrive at 10:30 a.m. for the 11 a.m. departure (trip was scheduled for 11-2). We arrived promptly at 10:30, but were last in line to get on the boat which left at about 10:35 rather than 11. The boat was so packed we had to split up and couldn't sit together, let alone go up top or front of the boat to the best seats. The trip was supposed to end at 2 and we were back at the dock at 1:25.

I've been on other whale watching trips, and many snorkeling and diving boat trips, and never have I had a crew be so restrictive about passengers moving around. Captain Dan's crew were so rigid they wouldn't even allow me to trade seats with my husband ("sit down right now!"). When whales were sighted we couldn't see them because we were on the wrong side of the boat and the captain didn't turn it so everyone could have a look. We were treated like children. They were concerned about safety, and the boat being evenly weighted, which I get, but maybe don't pack so many people on one boat so there's more room to move up front or up top to get a better view.

The Captain was very informative and experienced, and was able to find whales for most passengers to see. All in all a disappointing experience.

If you truly want to be educated about whales and have the best chance of finding them, then Captain Dan is for you. He knows whales and has a scripted narrative for you to listen to while searching for the whales. He found several on our trip, and a few that were quite close and we got some fantastic video of them. If I had to nitpick a negative it would be the snacks. We took the 7am trip and were given a gloved hand full of tortilla chips and a handful of M&Ms. Water, lemonade and apple juice for beverages which was perfect. I was just so happy to see the whales and listen to an expert on whales, the snacks were secondary. Go with him!

Wonderful Whale Watching

Captain and crew were very attentive even before the trip making sure we got there on time and knew where to go. It was apparent that they were very knowledgeable, sharing insights and information and stories during the cruise. We felt very safe and the captain seemed to know where to go to find whales.

my favorite part of the trip was the sunrise and the educational information...was nice to have a little refresher course on whales . We did get to see a hand full of whales/dolphins so a little disappointing however who doesnt enjoy sitting back and letting someone else do the driving. Captain and crew were awesome and cant wait to go out again. Having never been to Kona it was all good!

Excellent whale watching experience

Captain Dan's knowledge and also interaction with the other crew members. We saw several humpback whales and Dan tried to locate some pilot whales.

We enjoyed the experience but it didn't seem like he worked really hard to find whales. We saw one from a distance. Maybe my expectations were too high. We did like his stories and the information he and his crew provided about whales.

Very prompt—very organized—very knowledgeable about whales the entire crew was friendly, willingly shared knowledge. Captain definitely had tons of experience a beautiful ride and saw numerous whales

Whales, Dolphins, and sharks!

What a way to spend a Christmas morning! Warm weather, blue waters, and marine mammals! Captain Dan and his crew are very knowledgeable. His narration throughout the trip was a great way to learn about the animals we came upon and also about the Kona area that we could see from the boat. We saw Pilots whales, several Humpbacks, Bottlenose dolphins, Spinner dolphins, and one of my highlights - a oceanic white tip shark! I love the Kona area and look forward to a trip on this whale watch each time!

Not your typical whale watch

Took the tour this past week. First, be prompt. We had a confirmation for a 11:00 tour and the instructions said to be there by 10:30. We arrived at 10:35 and the boat was loaded ready to pull out. Slip is located towards the end of the marina and was a little tricky to find on our first time. Captain Dan has decades of experience with the whales and is passionate about his craft. Even though this was probably his 2,000th tour, he was very informative and cared about our tour. We were out a full 2/1/2 hours and saw about 8 whales. We were chasing a sperm whale sighting from earlier in the day, but were skunked. That would have been amazing to see! Boat is a little older and smaller than other tours and I would recommend bringing water with you. Overall very educational and satisfying trip.
