As you will see online its about an 8 mile hike from the end of the road in Pahoa to the lava. A bike rental will cut hours off that. You can ride the escape road past vehicle access along the coast all the way to the new delta viewing point. Its 4 miles, mostly downhill. For an extra $10, they will come pick you up at the barrier about half way down, saving you from half the uphill ride back.
We reserved bikes for a 4:30am rental to get there for daybreak. The road is pitch dark, they give you two mini led flashlights each which were not enough, definitely recommend bringing your own led headlamp. We made the coast in time for daybreak, the viewing area is 5 minutes off the road. The delta is maybe a half mile away so you can't see the ocean entry point up close, but at dawn you can see the lava flowing in. Riding downhill took maybe 30 minutes.
We got some great shots of the breakouts flowing downhill, plus the glow of the pool in Kilauea off the clouds during the predawn ride in. Going for sunrise or sunset is highly recommended.
Now to get to the breakout lava flows from the end of the bike path is another story. We were told by the staff that it was maybe a 20 minute hike from the road inland. Not so much. When we went (11/10/17) flow was "diminishing." There were no breakouts along the plain, they were all up mountain. Look for the smoke line, if you see smoke rising that is where the breakout is located. The distance is deceiving, but on the way back I tracked it at about 2 miles inland from the road, about a 2-hour hike each way over hilly broken terrain. Be prepared if you do it, and I suggest using a GPS run tracker on your phone the way in so you don't go off course coming back, as we did. Water is required, about 3 bottles per person for us.
I would NOT recommend trying the inland hike in the dark. The terrain was rough with lots of deep gorges you don't want to fall in. Use a guide if hiking inland at dark, and double the time.
High marks for the friendly staff and nice bikes, although I wish they had been a little more upfront about the time/distance to get to the lava inland. We kept thinking we were off course, but finally confirmed with other hikers. Would do this again, a little better informed this time.

The electric bike was a blast! Speedy quick (assisted) pedal to the lava viewing. Riding in the dark is wonderfully mysterious, and you can see the hills glowing in the distance. Got there before sunrise and had the view nearly to myself. The guys at the tent were friendly, double checked on both ends that I had enough water, and helped make recommendations for the rest of my day.

Watching the lava flow into the ocean at sunrise was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. We were the only ones there and stayed for a couple of hours enjoying the solitude and peace. We called Kaimu the day before our sunrise to make sure someone would be there at 5am to rent us bikes; we arrived at 4:50am and they were there and had electric bikes ready to go for us. It was raining so they also provided ponchos.

We went to Kaimu's Rental to see what our options were for getting out to the lava flow viewing area. We could have walked the entire way...rode bikes...or taken the shuttle. My husband and I opted to use Kaimu's Rental Shuttle instead of riding the bikes. It was a long bike ride and the shuttle would take us half way there and drop us off. We knew we could walk the rest of the way to get to the lava viewing area. We waited for the shuttle to return to the main base to pick us up, but was taking a little too long, so Shelley (who works for Kaimu's Rental)...offered to take us in her car to the drop off point. What a sweet thing for her to do for us! She had also just washed it...so I am afraid that dusty drive undid all her good work. :( She was also a great resource for area information during our short duration drive! Once we arrived at the drop off point...said goodbye to Shelley and we put our backpacks on and walked the remainder 2 miles to the lava flow viewing area. On our return, we just had to call them and let them know we were back at the drop off point and they sent the shuttle back for us. It made for an enjoyable day and lots of great pictures that we took along the way.

We reserved online for a 4am pick up. Definitely recommend it. They have their booth staffed pretty much all day. Someone is there around 3/330am. They one of the only other booths open at that time.
Definitely recommend going in the early am. The crowds are way less. Instead of a ton of people, it was just a few of us getting to enjoy the lava flowing into the ocean at sunrise.
It is a 4 mile trip. It is a little hilly, but not too bad. Just make sure you get a seat adjusted for your. I was my fault but it was a little short which made my leg muscles angry on the way back :)
Also, it is worth checking out airbnb for the “Front Row Seats to the Lava”. It is a cabin you can rent which is just past the bikes. Can walk to the bikes, rent one, enjoy the lava and get back and relax.

Kaimu Rentals equipped us in less than 20 minutes with the right bikes, helmets, complete with 2 flash lights per bike, locks and a first aid bag. Helmets are optional for adults. Many of them are stinky and dusty.
The cost was $20 per adult bike and $15 per child bike. Some of the bikes are getting tired. Take your time to pick ones that are in good condition. Logan was super helpful in the process.

Had a great time with the family riding bikes to the flow. It was a good easy ride and we spent a couple hours just watching the flow of lava go into the ocean

Showed up at 430am and we were helped within 5 minutes. I recommend making sure your gears work and seat is adjusted to the appropriate height. If going while its dark, you are provided with bike flashlights but a headlamp would be brighter and lend itself to greater safety. Chainless bikes are good. My chain came off my chain bike when the gears had trouble. Overall, grateful for the bikes as it they make for an efficient and memorable experience!

We found this place by talking to one of the locals. End of highway 130 which takes you to a breathtaking view of the lava hitting the ocean. Spectacular at sunset accessible by biking or hiking in. We rented bikes from Kaimu rental which is at the location and had great service, perfect bikes and an overall terrific experience. Reina was so helpful and explained everything to us. This is a MUST do and biking in using Kaimu rental bikes is the only way to go. So happy we found this location and the bike rental place.

My wife and I were excitedly looking forward to renting a bike to take to the volcano viewing platform area, and we prepaid for a rental and transport at Kaimu Rental. When we arrived, we were turned away from going to the launch point by a uniformed parks person. They told us that the fumes from the volcano were too strong so they weren't permitting people to go the volcano route. Disappointed, we turned around and left Kaimu a message with the news. They never called us back, and so we wrote asking for a refund of the money that we prepaid, and they haven't gotten back to us for 3 days now. I have filed a dispute with the credit card company. I would think twice before using this company for your bike rental.
