What an amazing experience! The pilot Shane was very knowledgeable about the land and the historical facts. He had the perfectly timed music playing in the background… like flying through the perfect circle rainbow as we listen to Bruddah Iz’ Somewhere Over the Rainbow 🌈.
We got to see Mauna Lani, Kilauea Bolcanoes. Currently technically not active but still spewing bunch of smoke up in the air. We got to see a whole new perspective of the volcano seeing the whole rim and clearly visible path of the lava flow old and new.
And to see so many tall, gorgeous waterfalls!! Waipio valley is somewhere sacred to Native Hawaiians and no longer accessible to general population. To see it even from the distance was a privilege and an honor. The next valley over we got to fly into was special! To hover in the middle of the big valley to soak in the view of the waterfalls, lush green, and looking out to the ocean was the rarest view of what I imagine heaven to be.
There were so many waterfalls one after the other was the side of the island not easily accessible but by air. The uninterrupted nature is at its best in beauty, freely flowing clean water down the folds of the mountain.
Have you seen a rainbow in complete circle? The pilot told us that the rainbows are made in a circle but on land we don’t see the bottom. Seeing it with this magnetic background was probably once in a lifetime experience.
With the perfect weather condition, it allowed us to explore further and we got to see the whole island. What a treat! We switched helicopter in Hilo, for their rotation for maintenance, so we got to see two types of helicopters too.
We got the whole experience from inside the cockpit and outside camera on video. It’s definitely worth the USB purchase! Sound and conversations are all recorded for you to relive the moments and share with your loved ones.
Thank you Blue Hawaiian Helicopters! It was my best excursion of the trip!!

This tour was fantastic! Our pilot Toshi was extremely knowledgeable! He made us all feel very comfortable, explaining operations and what to expect. He answered all our questions. We were able to see a whale family, which was quite different from the air than from the water! His maneuvers were smooth and gradual so that I never felt uncomfortable during the flight. We descended into volcano craters and canyons - unforgettable!

What makes for a truly memorable and breathtaking helicopter tour of the Big Island? Just ask our pilot Greg. It was his masterful flying and communication that made this by far the best heli tour ever (and I’ve been on quite a few).
As a Professor of Educational Psychology, I know a few things about how to engage learners Pilot Greg deserves an honorary PhD in Education. He was explicit about the rules with clearly-stated explanations about what was required, why, and how to use the various safety equipment. As we flew over the still simmering and smoldering volcano, he explained with pinpoint accuracy the history of the volcanic activity on the island, the series of recent volcanic events, and the current status of Mauna Kea. We saw the earth evolve with lava!
Greg punctuated the learning with chatting with the passengers. Myself, my friend from London, and two lovely nurse anesthetists from New Orleans. He fostered a true sense of group esprit de corps and we all found ourselves is perfect harmony.
The lively conversations never deterred from the sightseeing. Greg knew where to find whales and dolphins. When he spotted a boat on the northern side of the island, he explained that this was a sure indicator of unusually calm seas.
Eventually we landed in front of a very steep and majestic waterfall. As we walked about the small grassy/rocky area, the comradery was even more wonderful. Greg shared a bit about his family and the four passengers spoke about familiar themes that engaged the whole group. We took group shots and Greg shot a selfie of all of us.
Was the 2+ hour flight expensive? Absolutely. But it was replete with wonderful memories and new friendships. Make this investment in a lifetime memory.

Stunning once in a lifetime experience on the Big Island. Our guide Greg was sensational at explaining the history, topography and geology while keeping us glued to our seats with the wonders of the island. Seeing the lava flows at Kilauea, winding around the northern valleys and seeing whales along the spectacular shoreline - couldn't recommend this enough. I can't believe he gets to do this every single day!

I was hesitant about this trip because of the cost but it was the experience of a lifetime. From the moment we left the heli-pad lifting toward the sunshine it felt surreal. Seeing the Kilauea caldera and the bubbling lava was unique but it was the valleys that left me breathless. Our pilot Hans was a wonderful pilot and knowledgeable about the island and its history and features.

From the moment we entered the base, Blue Hawaiian Helicopters staff welcomed us to their clean, comfortable and well designed facility. From the open air lanai overlooking their fleet of helicopters, we were provided a safety briefing describing the aircraft, it’s safety features, and clear directions as to what we would soon be experiencing.
We shared our helicopter with a delightful couple and our pilot, Greg. We were all provided with headsets that eliminated the aircraft noise while providing us clear communication with each other and the pilot.
Greg was an amazing, informative host, providing a commentary on what we were seeing as we flew. His knowledge of the island’s landmarks and history added great value to our flight. He made a connection with each of us in conversation, demonstrating empathy and humour as he involved us in the experience.
In every respect, this helicopter tour was an enjoyable, memorable experience.

This was our first helicopter ride and it was very cool. The big island is beautiful and seeing it from a helicopter was even more fascinating. Our guide was ver knowledgeable and gave interesting facts about the island and the volcanoes. We were there for the Mauna Loa eruption, which was awesome. We had scheduled a ring of fire flight out of Hilo but were told no flight were going out of Hilo due to the Mauna Loa eruption. We were only told this two days before our flight, which was a little frustrating. We had to reschedule some other activities and ended up driving to Kona area from Hilo every day of our stay. The employees worked with us to get on another flight, which was very much appreciated.

I am scheduled for a tour next week. Will there be opportunity to see any lava if it is still flowing? Please let me know what the views the flight includes.

Hi
We are coming to the big island in this August, how long ago should we book the helicopter tour in advance? Is there any change due to the recent volcano activity? Thanks!

you should try to book at least a week ahead of time, but remember all is dependent on weather conditions, volcanic conditions.
Is there a big difference between the Eco-star and A-star helicopters?

I like to compare the two aircrafts to rental cars. The A-star is going to be your compact car, takes 5 people and has bench seats. The Eco-star feels more like an SUV, takes 6-7 people and has 1st class seats + more windows to view out of. I like to fly Eco when I get the chance.

Hi, I am travelling to Maui at the end of next month and I was hoping to head to the Big Island for a day to see the active volcano. My boyfriend is a Geology Major and would love to see the lava, I was wondering if it would be likely that we could see it? Also if we book now but are unable to fly because of air restrictions if we get our money back? Thanks :)

Aloha Hayley,
The current lava activity changes by the hour, and is the remarkable act of mother nature. Our pilots do their best to search out any activity while providing information on the history of the Kilauea Volcano, and the Pu’u O’o Vent. Volcanic activity is ever changing, and can be in the form of a skylight, fresh orange/red surface flow, to silver cooling flow, to a darker black cooled flow. Some of these flows can date back to the 1800’s or later. That’s the beauty of this tour, it’s not only a hunt for lava but an aerial view of how the islands of Hawai’i were formed.
Blue Hawaiian Helicopters will also issue a full refund if weather elements restrict our ability to fly. Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) have not presently restricted our regular routes of flight, but if restricted to the point we cannot operate a tour, a full refund will be issued.

Wondering if the helicopter tour is any good right now with the somewhat dense fog and smoke from the increased volcano activity . Also wondering about safety of this tour at this time. Do we even get to be anywhere near the volcano? Or do we get to fly over the Leilani estate area where the new
Fissures are opening ?

Aloha,
Our tours of Big Island continue to showcase the beauty and majesty of the Volcanoes National Park and the Waterfalls of the Kohala. Conditions within the National Park change hourly, and our Pilots always endeavor to provide the best viewing aspects which showcase the Kilauea eruption.
The FAA continuously institutes and updates Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) as volcanic activity changes. These airspace restrictions require all flights to maintain a safe distance laterally and vertically due to the unpredictability of force, and the magnitude that lava can burst from the surface.
Blue Hawaiian is also very sensitive to the current situation in Leilani Estates. Unlike a surface break which dispenses lava in the controlled viewing environment of the Volcanoes National Park, this current eruption is occurring in the neighborhood streets of our family and friends. First responders, property destruction, and loss of livelihood within the local community is not something we feel is appropriate to showcase on our tour.

We are staying on Oahu and would like to do a day trip to the big island. I would like to book a morning tour with you but am wondering if you partner with anyone so that we could do an afternoon hike in the National Park? We won't have transportation so I am trying to figure it all out. We plan to visit in Nov of 2018

Hi, you need to call Blue Hawaiian Helicopters direct if you want to book a tour, but be mindful that helicopter tours especially to volcano will be dependent on the weather. Best to reach them one week before you come.

I know there are flights (on planes) from Honolulu to the Big Island. Blue Hawaiian is about 25 minutes from the Kona airport, which means you may have to rent a car to get to their location. You may want to call and see what they suggest, but taking a plane, renting a car, and taking the helicopter tour will be a pricey adventure! Hope this helps!
