This protected area was wonderful to visit, enjoy the beauty and learn a bit about Kauai. Was able to read and learn from a couple of informational displays. An easy walk from out hotel. More information is available at Kaneilouma.org

The site is large, and was very informative. Parking is a bit hard though, as you have to walk from a parking lot down the street.

If you're into history and want to know more about Kauai and it's people: STOP HERE! They do such a great job at this moment of sharing the importance of the totems, location, people, and culture of the island. I was taking a walk in the area and added this, even though it was away from the beach and on a more main road. Definitely walkable if you're staying in the area.

...historic site I kind of stumbled into today. Great information panels explaining the site and general Hawaiian cultural information. Four Hawaiian style tiki totem poles standout and set apart this site from others. I've been on the islands 8 years now and I don't remember ever seeing such an extensive site. This was once a village or town not a just building.

Passed by the totems several times before deciding to stop and check the place out. A very detailed set of interpretive signs give the history of the ancient Hawaiian village, the ruins of which are preserved here.

This is a fascinating set of ruins once aa Ancient Hawaiian Village along the Koloa Heritage Trail. Take the time to read the signs and plaques to learn about the village that was once thriving here.

I know some people have not appreciated this place but the exhibit is much more than a number of educational signs. The signs are terrific by the way and you will learn quite a lot. This site would have been converted condos or other vacation spots if it wasn't for one man's perseverance about the land and his heritage. The four ki are astrological symbols that are equally impressive to those in Stonehenge. The idea that the Hawaiians were able to travel to Tahiti and back (not necessarily in that order) shows how much they knew about celestial navigation.

We have seen this site grow from totally overgrown to the reclaimed historic village. The site was saved by locals from redevelopment for high end vacation houses. Hooray for this effort! Very informative signage has been added since our last visit. Well worth the stop when in the Poipu Beach area.
