Dear Salsgang, Thank you so much for the fine review. It was Kebo's pleasure to host the Maine State Mid-Amateur tournament. The golf course was set up for some of the finest golfers in Maine, with green speeds up a notch more than normal, and pin placements fair but some tough to get to. The rule of thumb at Kebo even with regular speeds is “Stay below the hole." In 128 years, it is safe to say there had been tens of thousands of 3 putts due to being above the hole at Kebo. Of course, we also think that Kebo is a special place with a whole bunch of history. You walked where some of the greats of golf, politics and business had walked. And with the trade winds, Kebo never gets boring, and very rarely plays the same from day to day. Thanks again for the review, we are pleased that you enjoyed yourself, even when not playing your best golf. Please come back and spend some time getting to know Kebo better. Mr. Ratliff First let me thank you for playing Kebo Valley Golf Club, and second for your review. I am saddened that you did not find everything as you, or we hoped you would find it. We work very hard at keeping Kebo in top shape and enjoyable for our members and guests. I do see where your tee time was at 11:24 on Wednesday August 3, 2016. Looking at the tee sheet it was a fairly busy morning with a good amount of play. To address your points - Our maintenance crew started their day at daybreak, working to get the course ready for golfers starting at 7 a.m. I am sorry, it seems that our crew were working on each of the first 11 holes as you played. Weed-waking is a duty that done later in the day, and the grass removal on the fairways is done after the grass that was mowed earlier in the day has dried. Our player assistants are there to monitor the pace of play, and to assist you the golfer. I also see you played as a twosome that day, and it may have seemed slow if you were behind groups of four. Our player assistant most certainly should have acknowledged you presents, and if needed, informed you of any major holdups. And if you had tried to get his attention, he should have stopped to listen to your needs. The layout of Kebo Valley Golf Club was designed by Herbert Leeds before 1888, Kebo remains mostly untouched, besides a small redesign in 1926 by Donald Ross. In the early days of golf everyone walked, so the distant from greens to tee were much closer than today's standards. With greens and tees designed closer together there will be more connections with other players. Fortunately, there have been very few times we have had any issues due to the design. Today courses are designed to encourage the use of riding carts to help generate revenue, with distance of up to a mile from some greens to tee. Kebo is surrounded by Acadia National Park, so there is no land available to change our layout. However, even if there was, we would not dream of changing the layout of the 8th oldest club in America and the oldest in Maine. I am concerned that your day was so bad you gave us our first rating under 3. A 1 rating is not a rating we have ever received, nor do we want to see again. I have shared your review with our Golf Professional and Superintendent for their rumination. With giving us a rating of 1, I doubt that you would want to play Kebo again.
