A different perspective

We were headed to the Davy Crockett birthplace and happened across this site in Greenville, TN about halfway to the Crockett birthplace. The site includes his house and his tailor shop which is enclosed inside the Visitor Center. There is much detail about his life and politics. Although he was a Democrat trying to follow Lhincoln’s reconstruction plan, the Radical northern Republicans hated him for it, which led to his impeachment. His politics reminded me of Nixonian Republicanism

The home tour was very nice with period furniture and wall paper/pictures, etc. Our tour guide was very prepared and did a excellent presentation.

I visited with my family in June 2023. Tough sell to my teenagers, however when we got the staff was amazing the and they made the short tour fun. We walked the entire grounds and visited his gravesite. Nice, quick, historic stop.

A great stop not far off the interstate. We timed it just right to get the tour at the house, about a 10 minute walk from the visitor center. The ranger at the house was a wealth of knowledge and a good storyteller. I learned a lot more about our 17th President. The information ranged from his early years in poverty to his time as a tailor before moving onto his political aspirations.
The house across from the visitor center is open anytime the center is with informational plaques about the early years, family genealogy, and the restoration process. We ran out of time to watch the movie. Plan to spend about 2 1/2-3 hours to take in all this site has to offer.

Short Visit

A small section of history related to Andrew Johnson. It's about a 15 minute drive from the interstate to downtown Greenville. The visitor center has their own parking lot. Walk across the street to find the visitor center, the tailor shop, etc. You can drive further and visit the national cemetery. The park staff is a skeleton crew, like most of the NPS right now, but he was still friendly and offered suggestions. Cancellation stamps were easy to find and the bathrooms were clean. Really, this is about a 30 minute visit. It doesn't take much time to see this park.

An unexpectadly perfect way to spend half a day

The most interesting morning spent learning about Andrew Johnson. The tour of his residence by the tour guide was fascinating. Best of all it is free! You just have to book a slot on the tour of the house, the visitor centre does not need a booking and it too is very well worth a visit.

One of the best Presidential historic sites I've visited

This is a very nice little historic site. There is a small museum and movie at the visitor center, which are very informative, but the highlight is the homestead tour. The tour was about an hour long and as we walked through the house, the ranger giving the tour was very engaging and told us all about the house and pieces in it, but also about Andrew Johnson, his family, and the history of the period. I learned a number of interesting things on the tour that I hadn't known previously.

Highly Informative and Quality Historical Site

In our goal to visit sites for all Presidents, we felt the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site is one of the more informative and well maintained that we’ve visited. The Ranger giving our tour (Ashley) did a terrific job relating facts about the President and many stories about his life in Greeneville and that of his family. Many of the facts about him have been lost to most or misunderstood. We learned a great deal. His tailor shop inside the museum gives a wonderful depiction of a man who started with nothing but through hard work and diligence, rose to be President. The two homes on the tour are very well maintained. We appreciate the historian’s approach that is taken where facts and data are presented, without reinterpretation based on today’s views. Both positive and negative are clearly shown, but as historical facts. We did not feel there was any bias of one over the other. Very refreshing. We also visited the National cemetery where the President and family are interred along with hundreds of veterans. Very moving. A must visit if you are in the area. Highly recommended.

Great visit

This site is not given its just due. There is plenty to see. There is a guided tour of his home. Be sure to go the burial site. The view is gorgeous. The exhibits are thought provoking. I left questioning my opinions of Johnson.
