Gary, the campground host, went above and beyond to make sure we had the best experience possible. He even shuttled us back to our van after our kayak down the river. This is a beautiful and very relaxed place to camp.

Picturesque Antietam Creek meanders through the rolling terrain of Sharpsburg and lends its name to the horrific Civil War battle that remains, in terms of casualties, the bloodiest day in American history. Most visitors to the battlefield park will see the creek at the Burnside Bridge. Here, the creek swollen by recent rains, the bottleneck created by the bridge, and the high ground on the opposite side occupied by the Confederates, combined to frustrate General Burnside’s efforts to bring his Corps across the Antietam Creek to effectively engage the Confederate’s right flank.

Antietam Creek is now my favorite place to kayak. It takes us about 4 hours to go from Devil’s Backbone to Burnside Bridge. There are a few challenging areas to maneuver through, which keeps the trip exciting. I wouldn’t take a beginner there unless they have a guide. It’s so peaceful and beautiful, and lots of wildlife! Weekdays are best, weekends can get crowded with tubers.
We’ve seen a Barred Owl (!!), beavers, Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, and numerous birds, deer.
Serenity at it’s best!!

On our visit to Antietam, we took a stroll over the The Lower Bridge to see the creek and the Sycamore tree that remains from the time of the Civil War. Very quiet and heart stirring area.

We went on self guided tours, not much of a crowd person. The people at the different information centers were extremely helpful. We loved our time in West Virginia and Maryland. Our cabin sat up on a hill looking down at Antietam Creek. All of the people were very friendly.

This is a great place to visit if you are a great Civil War enthusiast. The Battlefield is beautiful and is only a short 45 minutes from Harpers Ferry and 90 minutes from Gettysburg. While at Antietam you need to wail across the bridge where General Burnside's troops fought. There are many spots on the battlefield to just sit and contemplate what these brave men did that day. While at the park you need to go to Pry House, not only was this McClellan's headquarters, but is was also a huge Union Field Hospital. The best time to visit Antietam is in the fall when the leave at their peak.

There are several place in the park to see the bridge. I recomend Burnside bridge where you can see both the bridge and a good span of the Creak.

My family loved tubing and kayaking down Antietam creek. Be careful of rocks and fallen trees, but the water is usually clear so no worries about visibility of the obstacles. Also if you fall in the water you can always stand up, just check the water level before you go, 3 to 3 1/2 feet is the best time to go. Also make sure you look at a map before you go, and leave plenty of time before dark, I would say 5-6 hours for the first time. (We finished tubing in about 4 1/2) Go have fun! It’s great!

It is clear that Geography is a major factor in WV, VA, PA, and MD warfare. We noted the importance of the Shenandoah, the Potomac and Antietam waters.
Antietam Creek is a 41.7-mile-long (67.1 km) tributary of the Potomac River located in south central Pennsylvania and western Maryland.
Antietam Creek varies is width and depth. Variance is about 40 feet wide and perhaps four feet deep.
Antietam Creek and the Potomac were two natural landscape features which were of concern to Lee and to McClellan.
Interesting today, we saw several rafters enjoying Antietam Creek.

Several times during the hike through the Antietam Battlefield you come across the Antietam Creek. You can see how difficult it would have been for troops to maneuver through this area.
