Rick was awesome and extremely knowledgeable. We’ve never done a walking tour before and it was a great first experience! We really appreciate all the time and effort Rick puts in to make his guests feel comfortable. Take a tour with him!

I am very interested in history and have taken guided tours a number of times over the past 40 years or so. Rick is the best. He was our guide for a two hour tour of Harpers Ferry. Every minute was fascinating. He knows all there possibly is to know about the town, its history, and particularly its role in the Civil War. His perspective is different from the superficial explanations that one might get from a less knowledgeable person without the in-depth understanding of the politics and root causes that led to the war, and the critical role of Harpers Ferry in these events. Rick gets the highest rating possible, and I recommend his tour to everyone visiting Harpers Ferry, with any interest in its role in our history.

We were so glad we booked this tour of Harpers Ferry. Rick was very informative during the tour. It ended up just being us four.
He was very friendly and kept our attention the whole 3 & a half hours. He asked some questions that our children were able to answer. We walked away happy with what we had learned. We will come back in October for his ghost tour. Thanks so much.

I am an avid ghost tour participant and this one is by far my favorite. I bought the book “A Ghostly Tour of Harpers Ferry by Shirley Dougherty” that was shown on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour Website. I read this before the tour, and it did not disappoint but when I attended the actual tour then all the stories proceeded to come to life right before your eyes. Harpers Ferry is a quaint town with a lot of history and intrigue.
Our guide was Mr. Rick owner and historian for Harpers Ferry and let me tell you it was AWESOME. We had a mixture of young adults, with some still being in high school, a family from London and everyone was fully engaged in learning about the civil war, John Brown’s raid and all the rich history contained in Harpers Ferry.
Mr. Rick is a great storyteller, full of extensive knowledge of the history of Harper’s Ferry, great singer and all the stories came to life with his retelling. Rick was very informative, and he kept the group interacting and engaged as he was telling the stories. He did a great job blending unexplained events with historical accounts. We were walking through town it was like we were transported back in time with the dress of Rick and how the stories were told. As we were standing/sitting at each place as the story was told you could feel the characters, see the characters, and totally feel the story come alive. It lasted almost 2 hours and it was not enough time for me, I wanted and needed more, but spooky enough that I was also glad to not be staying in town this night.
Make sure you arrive early take in the sights before the tour a lot of great places to visit and learn about the history of Harpers Ferry but wear comfortable shoes and sturdy shoes because you will be doing a lot of walking which makes it that much more fun. I recommend that you try to park at the Amtrac station because there is no real parking in Harpers Ferry. There is a shuttle bus to take you there but at night the bus does not run so you would be stuck.

I took the Harpers Ferry ghost tour for $16.00. The female tour guide was not friendly or personable. She seemed knowledgeable, but wasn't good at telling ghost stories. She said she was a history teacher. Well, she talked like one too. I don't this tour was worth it.

Listening to Rick give this tour takes me back to my college history class days. I felt like I should have been taking notes. But there was a lot to learn about the history of Harpers Ferry, from the first river crossing to the Civil War. The John Brown episode takes up a fairly large part, but its not the only interesting thing that ever happened here. We unfortunately picked one of the hottest days of the year but it was a really worthwhile tour. Rick certainly has his take on what happened in this town and he can back it up with facts.

Rick was an extremely knowledgeable tour guide who is very passionate about the history of this beautiful area. He was open to questions, and did not rush us through a "canned" script. His tour is not for someone wanting a 30 minute overview, as he presents history from many time periods. We appreciated that he started the tour in beautiful St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, where we could escape from the heat, yet also took time to walk us around various parts of Lower Harpers Ferry. My husband walks with a cane, but Rick was very accommodating and made the tour an enjoyable experience for us both. Certainly well worth the price of the tour!

Just returned from a trip to Shenandoah Valley and Harper’s Ferry where my husband and I booked an “Oh Be Joyful” tour with Rick Garland. Despite the cold, rainy day, Rick was undaunted, and meeting in the shelter of Saint Peter’s Church and several other comfortable locations, spent the next 5 hours with us, engaging us with his vast knowledge of political and Civil War history, asking probing questions and encouraging different viewpoints. Rick is a well-read master storyteller who brings history alive, presenting different viewpoints and provoking thoughtful discussion. Recommend that adults bring their kids to see how fun and engaging learning can be.

Three couples took the tour with Rick and had a wonderful time! He was very informative, fun, musical, knowledgeable about current events and past history, and friendly. Rick dressed in period clothing, took on the persona and accents of various historical figures and taught and entertained our group for four hours. We saw all of the interesting aspects of Harpers Ferry and alternated sitting and listening with looking at pictures, walking, and seeing the historical town and beautiful countryside. Rick sang period songs to us, had us join in singing with him, told jokes, and shared numerous interesting historical stories. Through the course of the tour he got to know us also and it was a very enriching experience. A wonderful time was had by all!

Can my husband use amobility scooter the end of july t of things in Harper's ferry while the rest of the family does white water rafting
เขียนเมื่อ 26 มิถุนายน 2018
This will somewhat depend on what kind of mobility scooter your husband has (the size of the wheels, standard model versus the newer ATV style) as well as his degree of need for staying on the scooter at all times, versus being able to walk short distances and up a few steps from time to time.
Historic Lower Town was mostly built in the early 1800's using rough cut stone slabs for sidewalks making them very bumpy and uneven. Most buildings/exhibits/restaurants require at least a couple of steps to enter into and many spaces will be very small, perhaps too small to accommodate a scooter if you can even get the scooter into them.
'The Point,' (the confluence of the two rivers) is very rough gravel and on a fairly good incline/pitch to access.
Part of the commercial area also goes up a fairly steep incline as Harpers Ferry is partly located on the side of a Rock Ledge because George Washington insisted that the 2nd National Gun Factory be located there despite Government Engineers telling him that it is a terrible place to build anything because of it's location between two mighty rivers that will flood you out and the side of a rock ledge.
If the scooter is the more ATV type, then I would say that there would be some places that your husband could go or access, but if he is unable to walk at all, especially up a few steps to enter into exhibit buildings, etc., he will be extremely limited in his access to most sites.
There is some limited parking at the Amtrak Train Station, including some Handicap Parking, which is located in the Historic Lower Town Section, where you could drop him off. I don't think you would want to go to the park's main visitor center as that would then require him to use their 'Shuttle Bus' system which I'm not sure can accommodate a scooter (you would have to check with The National Park for that information).
Well, I hope this somewhat helps. I wish we were more handicap friendly than we are, but George Washington never envisioned any such need when he insisted Harpers Ferry be built upon.
Take care and good luck!

We are planning to arrive at the Harper's Ferry KOA on Saturday afternoon, April 14, after leaving Antietam. Do you have tours on Sundays? Should we plan to arrive early afternoon on Saturday? LOM
เขียนเมื่อ 25 มีนาคม 2018
I reserve most Sunday's for Church & Family and I do already have a Church function planned for Sunday, April 15th. I would be available to conduct a Historical Tour for you on Saturday afternoon, April 14th.
My very comprehensive summary/tour of Harpers Ferry's multi-leveled and multi-faceted history typical lasts 3 to 4 hours so I would like to start at 1 or 2 PM, at the very latest 3 PM, as I will also need some time to break, eat, and then get ready to conduct that night's Ghost Tour, which starts at 8 PM.
There's lot's of info, including parking info, on my website, which you can access from my TripAdvisor page.
Thank you for your message and I will look forward to perhaps hearing back from you!
Sincerely,
Rick Garland
