Historic lighthouses of Boston Harbor
The day was excellent and although the seas got a little rough and filled with Spray but it was a most delightful day!
We loved the day .. It was well organized and very well narrated with the Coast Guard Auxiliary person and the Park Ranger who did most of the narration.
The skies were amazing with coastal storms brewing making it even more dramatic seeing Boston Light, Graves Light and the huge ships entering and leaving the Port of Boston ..
A great adventure and seeing the Boston Skyline from the Harbor is breathtaking!

Who knew there was such a large and interesting Fort in Boston Harbor? The welcome Center is great with a 7 minute informative film and also many artifacts from long ago. You can self tour the fort and explore the very interesting spaces. Great views of Boston and the lighthouse. It's a short ride from Hingham, about 15 minutes.

Two parts proved worthwhile. First, while traveling to the four lighthouses, the crew gave us an oral history of the islands and lighthouses. Next was the actual visit to the lighthouses. The ship paused by the major ones but not long enough to enjoy the view. Overall, a worthwhile trip.

Purchased tickets online. Boarding was easy, nice scenic view of Logan and city skyline. Things that could be improved. Tickets should have were to board your ferry since there is more than one. Also, you can't island hop any more which was my whole plan and no where could I find that on their website. Also the cafe was closed, also not on their website so wasn't able to get bottled wayer or lunch. Still had a great time on Spectacle island looking for sea glass and pottery, would have stayed longer if we had enough water or snacks.

Well worth the cost for the spectacular photos you can take and the exhilarating salt spray you will experience! We booked online and showed up at their visitor's center on the Greenway. The park rangers were pleasant and one even found me a postcard when I asked if the booth sold postcards (it did not). A short walk to the pier might be challenging for the handicapped. The boat had inside and outdoor seats and there were two levels. No food or water is sold, so bring your own. The boat was not at capacity so everyone had seats. The narration was excellent once the volume was adjusted. It was a presentation of informative facts about each island and lighthouse with no ridiculous humorous banter. It is a long enough trip at 2 hours but the setting of the sun and the lighthouses were wonderful. I highly recommend this tour to acquaint you with Boston Harbor.

We took the Boston Lighthouse Sunset Cruise recently. Everything about the cruise is great; there is a park ranger on board who gave us narration of the various islands and of course the light houses. It was very informative. We went on a beautiful afternoon with calm seas and clear blue sky.
However, the name of the cruise is a misnomer: the cruise is 5:30-7:30pm, and in July, sunset isn't until after 8pm. The boat reaches the turnaround point (Graves Light) at 6:30pm, which is nowhere near sunset. Even when we return to the pier, it is still pretty light out. So when you take the cruise, just be aware of sunset times and don't expect to see the sun setting behind the lighthouses during the cruise!

Spectacle Island
The good:
-your local library grants a coupon for buy one get one free ferry ride for up to 4 people.
-a pleasant boat ride to and from with scenic views and vantage points you would not otherwise see unless you had a boat.
The bad:
Parking garage : $42 for day, ferry $25 pp, -if you didn’t have any other beach options and wanted to pay $70 for parking and ferry then by all means enjoy your day
Catch the ferry: with parking and other high visit items going on in dock area (aquarium, Faneuil hall, etc) I would try to get there 20-30 min before your ferry.
Food/ drink; beers $8 and lack luster taco bar where minimal meat options on tacos and they run out quickly. Best pack a cooler because this place will run you dry.
Beach: periwinkle rocks everywhere and a place where you would want to enter the water and keep your crocs on the whole time for comfort.
Swimming Length of beach was probably 2 school buses long.
Water was cold, I enjoyed the ice bath by floating.
Hiking: ever want to walk a gravel road for 15min 3/4 mile trail to get to the highest point on the north end. (closest side to city)? Save yourself some time, money and see similar views from ft revere park in Hull.
SavingGrace for Harbor Islands: bring back the island hopper ferry so folks can experience more than 1 island on same day. We had plans for George’s island, but instead of waiting 2 hrs for next ferry and no beach/missed event we went to Spectacle. Would’ve easily took hopper to see more out there.
On way back in to city disappointed; at least take a walk down Faneuil hall to see some shops and street performers. Lifted our spirits
Was interested in camping on an island but after this experience the ride to hingham seems just as lackluster.
Saturday in the books!

Lighthouse Cruise was fantastic. Captain put boat in perfect position to capture some great shots. Crew was friendly and went out of their way to make everything perfect. Timing of cruise allowed for some nice sunset shots.

The whole experience was amazing with not one second of boredom! The guides had so much knowledge of the geography and history and provided us with binoculars to aid in our adventuring! Ending the tour we stopped alongside the airport and were able to see three planes approaching landing as they passed directly over us. Priceless!

I'm planning a day on the islands with a girlfriend. We are both senior citizens and live locally. We like walking casually, sightseeing, eating at a nice fairly quiet restaurant (flexible about that) and having an enjoyable day. We would not spend hours and hours on an island, but might go to the beach for an hour to get the flavor of it. Which islands are the best to include, which do not pose a lot of time constraints for the ferry? Is it wise to limit it to just 2-3 islands? thanks for any help

Because of the ferry schedule it's difficult to plan a short trip. I'd recommend George's island - head out in the morning, explore the fort (a highlight) and back in the afternoon. Unless you have your own boat and can sail directly to Lovell, I would not recommend the beaches on the Harbor islands for swimming. Georges and Spectacle each have nice places to sit and enjoy the view, but they're more like city parks than island getaways.
I personally do not like Spectacle Island - I like shade and don't enjoy baking. Spectacle Island seems to be heated from within - who knows maybe there's some interesting chemistry going on there. The only time I'd recommend going is on the last few ferries of the Season in the Fall. If you can time a visit to match up with the Monarch butterfly migration, then it's worth a visit.

If you take your own vessel, can you visit the islands in the off season?

Maybe.
Best to check with the National Parks service Boston area.
Know that there is a fun, spooky Halloween event on the island with the fortress very soon.

Dear Bostonians
Due to go next week and this sounds great.
Few questions;
1. How much is the Ferry?
2. Where is the Ferry pick up point.
Thanks

But do take advantage of the ferry to Charlestown to see old Ironsides and get a view of Boston Harbor

My family is interested in going to Lovell's Island in August. I've read that the boat to George's Island continues on to Lovell's. Is that true for every trip on the schedule?
Also, any idea when the last boat from Lovell's would leave? Thanks!

So when I looked on the site, it said there were a couple of different islands; when I looked at the ferries it said different ones went at different times so I really don't know which one to go to. I'm hoping to get some time on the beach and do a little hiking. Any advice?

I took the Boston Harbor ferry to George's Island. There's a fort there that is cool and it's fun to walk around that island. From there you can go to other islands. One in particular had a lot of bunnies. Otherwise you can take the ferry to Spectacle Island. That looks like one for the beach more than George's Island. I don't recall other islands having good beaches but I didn't make it to all the others from George's island either. If you want beach, go to Spectacle; but I'm not sure about the hiking there. If you want a cool fort, go to George's and walk around. Hopefully others will know more about beach and hiking. You may have to choose unfortunately. But the one to George's island will have more options simply because you can go to more islands. Have fun and post your impressions for others.

Is there anywhere to stay on the islands. We are coming from England in the summer and wanted a few days somewhere quiet on arrival - we tried mill falls to the north but everything is full. Any ideas of somewhere perhaps less rammed by the tourist hordes? All recommendations gratefully accepted.

You can camp on some of the islands. Otherwise there are no places to stay. Camping is listed on the boston harbor islands website.
