We enjoyed boarding the ships and learning about the historical voyages these ships embarked. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to board the submarine and the Californian due to weather but there is plenty of other ships and exhibits to experience.

What a wonderful tour! Steve gave our group an interesting class on naval maritime history as well as a tour of the engine room. Kiki gave our group a wonderful tour San Diego on our swift boat ride. Both Steve and Kiki are passionate about their jobs and it showed in their respective presentations. Well worth the time!!!

Step Aboard and Explore the Fascinating World of Seafaring at Maritime Museum of San Diego! Visitors can access several unique ships including a ferry, submarine, and sailing vessels each with its own story to tell. The museum offers a great learning experience and can take a few hours to fully explore. Conveniently located near the Pier B terminal, we went during the break between doing a back to back cruise. My three year old loved the monsters exhibit.

We toured a submarine, steam ship, and five historic sailing vessels. I think anyone would enjoy the experience at Maritime Museum of San Diego. We spent three hours there. It was well worth the admission price. I highly recommend it.

Pretty nice old ships and lots of history. The upper deck of the Berkeley had some amazing woodwork and stained glass. Was also amazed how small the replica of Cabrillo's ship was. Couldn't imagine sailing that long on something that small.

We've seen these ships docked on the Embarcadero, but never took the time to explore. This time we decided check it out. We discovered it was only $20 ($15 for seniors) to go aboard 7 of the ships so we went for it. There was a variety of vessels, from the huge ferry to a submarine to several sailing ships used for different purposes. There was so much to look at and explore. Each had it's own story and we learned a lot. It took us a few hours to go through all the ships, but it could have easily taken more time if we had done more reading, or less time just quickly hopping on and off ships. Next time we'll probably take the guided tour and have someone tell us about what we're seeing.
I would recommend exploring these ships when in the area. They are walking distance from downtown San Diego, Little Italy, and Seaport Village (all of which I also recommend!). Great activity for all ages.

This was an interesting trip that included admission to the excellent Maritime Museum.
It wasn’t the comfiest of trips as you would expect on a boat like Californian - soft drinks and nibbles were provided but you had to climb down a ladder to the cabin below to get them.
The toilet was also down there - so do take the opportunity of using the one upstairs in the museum before boarding.
There were plenty of opportunities to get involved in the sailing of the ship helping the volunteers who do such a great job running it.
We did enjoy our trip and would recommend it to anyone who wants to get hands on involved.

I walked down to this museum from my hotel while in San Diego on business today. Wow! All of the ships, submarine, and boats on exhibit were excellent. Admission is only $15 for seniors & military (thanks for the military discount!) $20 for general admission. Where else can you explore vessels over a century old for that price? Boats that played a historical role in commerce and settlement of this country. Immersive history is the best way to learn, and this museum lets people touch the boats and climb down into the engine rooms and below deck. It’s not a “stand behind the rope and just take pictures” museum. Most of the boats are kept in a seaworthy condition, and I’d love to come back when I have more time and take a harbor tour.

WOW this maritime museum is 10 X better than the one in San Francisco, With 9 WELL MAINTAIED ships for us to visit; Star of India (LARGE steel sailing ship that plied all the oceans of the world) / HMS Surprise (used in the Johnny Depth movies “ Pirates of the Caribbean, and most noteworthy “Captain and Commander” with Russel Crow) this was the only craft we could not go on as she is getting ready to go into dry dock / Large steam-driven Ferry Berkley, that was used in between Oakland and San Francisco before the Oakland bridge was constructed. The ferry’s insides are immaculate and filled with all sorts of ship models and nautical things --Tom even got down into the engine room to operate the engine on the hydraulic jack with the help of a volunteer X submariner that volunteers to work at the museum.
A most excellent replica of a Spanish galleon / Media (private steam yacht, very similar to the shipwreck Glinda up in lake superior / Vietnam Swift river boat still with her guns / Pilot boat / AND The Navy deep diving research test vehicle SS 555 Submarine Dolphin (bult in 1968 and capable of reaching depths of 3-4 thousand ft.
Most of the ships in the fleet are fully operational (excluding the submarine and ferry) and are taken out on weekends with paying guest manning the stations.
We went out on the 1914 Pilot Boat for a 45-minute cruise in the harbor. Our female tour guide was from Italy and was quite the entertainer.

No. It would be very difficult with a small dog. Space is very, very tight. Lots of ladders.

You can enter the gift shop for free but anything past that on the pier requires a paid admission. From the public walkway the largest tall ship is about a 100 feet away.

Hello there! We recommend between 1.5 and 2 hours to see the whole museum. You can definitely stay longer as there is quite a bit of history here and some "on the water" add-on activities you can do.

There are a few areas that are accessible such as much of the steam ferry Berkeley (which does house a great many exhibits), however, most are actual or replica historic ships which were far from ADA compliant.

Hello,
Thank you for your interest in the Maritime Museum of San Diego. The ferryboat Berkeley is handicap accessible (both the main and upper deck) but all other vessels are not due to historical accuracy and preservation. Because of this we do NOT charge admission for individuals who are wheelchair bound.

I am looking for information specifically on the FOS and what availability usually is to be ON a vessel for the Festival. Also , does the actual sailing portion of FOS happen ONLY on Friday?

Hello and thank you for your interest in our Festival of Sail! There are various sailing opportunities before and during the festival. On September 4th we have our Parade of Sail which is when all the participating ships in the festival sail into the bay and dock here at the Maritime Museum. During our Festival of Sail we have "on-the-water activities" such as cannon battles, midday sails, and sunset sail which are on some of the visiting ships. We also have our Historic Bay Cruise on Pilot and our new Swift Boat Tour. All of these happen each day from September 5th thru September 7th.
