Lugar emblemático de San Diego. Tanto por el día como por la tarde o noche, merece la pena recorrer esta zona de la ciudad. Edificios de la época victoriana y variedad de locales para comer o beber algo. Indicar que no hay posibilidad de aparcar con facilidad en esta zona.

Safe as can be!

I’ve read recent reviews that this area is dangerous. I was there two days and never ever felt unsafe. They have cool shops, great food and I would highly recommend going there!
Homeless stay around Petco Park, so as long as you don’t go over there you have zero worries!
I was alone and never had the first homeless person approach me!
Go enjoy urself it’s a part of San Diego history!

Wow - how far down has this area come? Memories of a vibrant, interesting area of San Diego is now replaced by images of closed store fronts, homeless people everywhere, construction sites, trash. This is not a place I would recommend on. a visit to San Diego.

Unsafe with beggars and drug addicts

Sorry Gaslamp Quarter and San Diego, but I'm writing this review that echos other reviews to tell tourists not to go here. We visited one evening and wished we wouldn't have. We felt unsafe and there was no police presence on foot that we saw for the couple of hours that we were there eating and checking out this area. There were several unsavory people walking around with open containers of liquor harassing people and we had to walk faster to get away from one guy that was yelling at passing people all the while drinking out of his bottle. There were people sitting in front of businesses openly smoking crack out of their little glass pipes with their push rods and lighters just sitting there on the sidewalk. Every few steps you either got a strong smell of what smelled like a pit toilet or an in-your-face smell of marijuana. And yes, I realize marijuana is legal in California however I didn't expect to see people openly smoking it walking down the sidewalk. We stopped in at an ice cream shop to get sundaes and went to sit outside in their fenced in area to eat them and watch people walk by. There was a homeless person sitting right as you walk out of the ice cream shop in plain view of the employees, asking people if they had bought him any food and then another homeless person came into the fenced in area begging for spare change and then went through the garbage can. We ended up leaving our ice cream on the table and left the Gaslamp Quarter all the while noticing homeless people sleeping/passed out on the sidewalk in front of businesses as we made our way down 5th Ave to the trolley station.

Unsafe. Transients Own Streets. Open Drug Use

We used to love going downtown. No longer. Corner after corner after corner occupied mostly by transients. Many are obviously deranged and many are openly injecting or smoking. Mixed in are homeless families and kids. Open defecation. Local efforts to assist these people are often just triage.

Downtown San Diego was a mess in the 70’s and 80’s. A great rebirth occurred but drove many out of low rent buildings onto the streets. Add to that the crazies and druggies who roam at will and downtown has reverted to a cesspool.

Feel bad for all but especially downtown businesses. Covid hammered them but the thousands of transients (over 6,000 in this small area per the UT San Diego) and resulting crime are causing many to leave.

In Gaslamp, don’t be by yourself, know which areas are safe or not, pay for secured parking, and consider carrying defensive devices (pepper spray, stun gun, etc.).

Under no circumstances give money to anyone. It will cause a mob scene. Also, don’t argue. Just say no and move on. You will be cussed at but they seldom will physically confront you. However, it is extremely unnerving to walk through this area during the day and frightening at night.

Awesome spot for bar hopping. There are plenty of bar/ restaurants in the area. Decent choices on food. Service on places we visited were good

Gaslight aria dangerous and unclean.

Unclean. Food bender on the street serving food with no washing facilities and no gloves. San Diego health is extremely pour to allow this kind of service. Most cooks did not ware gloves or hair restraints.
Streets clustered with trash. I felt unsafe. Be await of pick pocket’s and scammers. I would not weir anything valuable. The oder in the street vas revolting. Vomit on the street from people who had to much to drink?

The Gaslamp Quarter has seen better days. I’m not sure if the decline is due to COVID, or if businesses are just moving towards the harbor or other places. Many stores and restaurants have closed and the ones that remain are expensive and crowded.

Day visit not worth it

Derelicts, urine smells and uneasiness. I wanted to go out for a nice meal and shop but its hard to overlook the homeless when you can see and smell them. 😪
