Undulating road surface around the reservoir which is marked out at 5 miles. Plenty of toilet facilities around the ‘lake’. Good view of the Miramar area from one end of the path.

Nice and wide paved road around the lake. It’s a nice 5 plus miles that you can walk, runs or ride a bike.
The scenery is calming and the weather in summer was perfect.

Soooo beautiful and scenic!! Parking is hard to get but great place to hike with wide roads. Easy to socially distance while you walk the 5.5 mile loop.

it is very relaxing to hear the birds and watching the blue jays. Also, you can enjoy seeing different colored docks swimming in the lake.

This beautiful Reservoir is conveniently located on Mira Mesa Boulevard right off Freeway 15. It is fed from water flowing from the Colorado River Aqueduct and the California Aqueduct, and serves half a million people in the Scripps Miramar Ranch Community.
The water was clean and clear, and there were tons of birds around when we visited – water birds, ducks, geese, etc. Activities in the area include a completely paved 5-mile hiking path, boating, fishing and picnicking. There were picnic benches and barbecue grills at various intervals along the walking path.
It is a great place for outdoorsy people, hikers, bikers, exercisers, dog walkers, people-watchers and families. The place is large, so we did not feel crowded even with the large amount of people present.
The only challenge would be the parking on busy weekends. We were lucky to get a spot right at the entrance.
Check this scenic place out. You will not be sorry.

Came here to hike the circumference of this beautiful lake which is about 5 miles of paved road and we got quite a workout. A brisk walk took about an hour and a half to cover the entire distant. Just about every point along the lake was scenic. There were distance markers every 1/4 mile so we knew how far we hiked. There were also portable toilets strategically placed along the way. Vehicles were allowed but were limited to 10 mph. Great place to cycle, jog, hike or stroll. There were also places along the lake near the entrance where families can picnic. The parking lot at the entrance seem to be quite a lot of parking spaces. Miramar Reservoir closes at 8 pm.

I enjoy kayaking Lake Miramar. It is usually very peaceful. The only other watercraft on the water are usually fishing kayaks or small motor skiffs with fishers trying to catch something. The launch ramp area is wide concrete, plenty of space.

You'll be surprised by this close-to-the-city reservoir surrounded by a paved road on level ground. The road makes lots of corners and turns as it follows the willows-tails and grasses at the reservoir's edge. The reservoir itself is formed by dam you can walk over at the bottom of large ravine in Scripps Ranch area. The view from the dam, looks down onto much of San Diego.This working water treatment facility is ideally situated for gravity flow.
The walk around the reservoir takes a couple of hours and is under 5 miles. The road itself can be busy, mostly people, running or walking, some baby-carriages, roller and inline skaters, and the occasional vehicle or bike. (10mph speed limit keeps everyone in check.) The reservoir had a few birds, ducks and large geese were at main parking area. Full restrooms and you can rent watercraft there. Also, there's a small concession stand catering to fishermen, bait and lures.
Most of the paved route around the reservoir has a lower packed earth trail running parallel. You'll get more of a feel of being in the country on the trail. Less people choose to take the trail, and for those tired of "pounding the pavement" its a welcome relief. As you walk through either the road or the trail, its interesting to look up. At the tops of hills above, California's chaparral gives way to houses, then estates, and finally condos or apartments.
Though named Miramar Reservoir, the I-15 exit is Mira Mesa Blvd, NOT Miramar Road.
Dogs are allowed on leash.

Walking this 5 mile walk that offers multiple and continuously changing perspectives of habitat natural to the Southern California Pacific coast is a pleasure. Gentle slopes combine with the indentations where reeds and other local fauna thrive. You can also rent a boat to row and try fishing as well.

Can you paddle board, or SUP, on the lake?

Wow, good question, I have never seen anyone paddle boarding before. Since it’s considered a reservoir, I suspect paddle boards and SUPs are probably not allowed - something about a rule I heard a while back that you cannot have bodily contact with the water in reservoirs (paraphrasing) but I would recommend you call their office to be sure. If you do find out the answer pls do share it back on this forum.
