A lovely place to visit, with an excellent hiking trail up to Glassy Mountain (1.3 miles one way, about 500’ in elevation gain). Also has a goat barn, which doesn’t impress me, but little kids love it. It is extra nice that dogs are allowed on the hiking trails. Do yourself a favor, and get familiar with Carl Sandburg's works before you visit. A great way to do this is to watch "The Day Carl Sandburg Died" on Youtube.
WARNING! Unlike most National Parks, THIS PLACE IS NOT OPEN EVERY DAY. Tours are timed, and group sizes are limited. Strongly suggest making reservations for the tour. DO NOT ASSUME you can get a walk-in / same day tour.

A very nice place! If you are not familar with Carl Sandburg's work, suggest you watch the documentary "The Day Carl Sandburg Died" before you visit. It will make your visit much more interesting and enjoyable. IMPORTANT NOTE! Turs are limitied to small groups (6 people at a time, I think) and TICKETS ARE REQUIRED. Get the the tickets online before you arrive, or you will very likely be turned away. The place is a working farm and farmhouse, adn can be hard for mobility-impaired folks to get around. The staff will send a van or golf cart to come get you, if need. Don't hesitate to use that service. If you are a hiker, reserve an extra hour or two to hike Glassy Mountain trail, located on the proprty.

We absolutely loved the house and the grounds. Our tour guide, Sandra, was amazing. It was so much fun to visit the goats. Highly recommended a stop at this beautiful place.

A lot has changed since I was last at this historic site. There was a bridge over a beautiful lake which started your trek up to the house but it has been drained and the bridge is under construction. It’s still a decent place to get a little walk through nature and not too difficult to navigate. Being off-season I thought we’d be able to grab a tour of the house but I was told they booked one month in advance. The best part of the whole visit was the volunteers at the goat barn. They were so happy to engage with everybody and you can read a book to a goat or brush them if you are so inclined. All in all since it was free it’s a pleasant way to spend a beautiful day and we witnessed a lot of people walking their dogs on the trails.

I did not tour the home but just walked some of the trails. There are easy walks and some that are a little more challenging but very manageable. Right now the bridge is out for repair and the lake has been drained but the trails are still open. I did see a fox on the trail so just be aware that you are still in nature and you will be fine.

We stopped here for a quick stretch our legs break on a longer drive and it was an excellent choice! My teens and I loved petting the goats and my English teacher heart adored seeing the grounds where Sandburg finished out his life. The house was closed due to Covid, but it’s a beautiful stroll and there are lots of hiking trails too. I do recommend parking at the hiker’s lot for an easier walk up, if you struggle with steeper walks.

We spent a few days hiking the gorgeous property. First off, looping the lake trail was so nice. If this is the only walk/hike you do, you'll love it. Then on another day we hiked Little Glassy Trail. Then on a third day we hiked Big Glassy Mountain. The entire experience was just so beautiful. Can't wait to return when the leaves are changing to see the colors. Even though the color was gone, the woods and trails are just spectacular. Big Glassy Mountain trail is gradually up all the way, but we saw families and people of all ages hike this trail on Thanksgiving Day. The grounds are free and there are goats for kids of all ages. Enjoy.

Nice walk around the grounds, lake. Leaves changing, really pretty. Cannot go into house, we still enjoyed coming here. Would like to come back when the house is open.

We walked the beautiful grounds and paths, however the house was not open due to covid. We saw many dogs and friendly people.

My father-in-law cannot walk very far. Could we drop him off at the house so he does not need to walk up the hill from the parking lot? Also, about how long did you spend when you visited the home and property?

When you arrive there is a call box at the parking lot. Call and they will send someone down to pick you up and bring you to the house. There is also handicap parking up close to the goat barn. It is a short flat walk to the house from that point. Call and they will tell you how yo get to that parking. I believe tours of the house are every half hour. 2 hours is enough for a nice visit if you are not hiking. If hiking add another 1 to 2 hours. Eat in Flat Rock at Honey and Salt or Hubba Hubba, both are fun and good. Enjoy
