The Neue Galerie is a world renowned and well regarded museum based in Manhattan, New York.

In May of 2023, I brought and treated my wife for a visit to the Neue Galerie and we very much enjoyed our time there.

The building that contains the museum is referred to as the William Starr Miller House. Designed by the prominent 20th Century architectural firm, Carrere and Hastings, the house once served as the residence for William Starr Miller, a successful industrialist and real estate operator, and subsequently, owned by Grace Vanderbilt, an American socialite, and the spouse of Cornelius Vanderbilt III, an American inventor, and member of the Vanderbilt Family.

Today, the Miller House is owned and occupied by the Neue Galerie museum. The museum was established by Ronald S. Lauder, a highly successful entrepreneur and philanthropist as a tribute to his friend, Serge Sarbasky an eminent 20th Century art collector and dealer.

Neue Galerie primarily features early 20th Century German & Austrian art. When visiting the museum, both my wife and I enjoyed viewing the paintings by Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoschka.

Our favorite painting was Klimt’s work, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, also called The Lady in Gold. We not only found this to be a stunning painting, but we also admired its incorporation of Byzantine, Egyptian & Greek artistic elements.

If you love early 20th Century German & Austrian art, then you should definitely visit and explore the Neue Galerie

Name of the exhibit is very misleading. Only the first 15 to 20 minutes of the exhibit is Klimt. The rest is showing of some dances which feels like watching an OK dance performance on a big screen TV.

the securities inside are rude. The securities Ignore visitors when they ask them questions or talk to them in demanding tone.

Totally disappointed.

Located in a quiet Upper East Side neighborhood, we were glad to have stumbled upon this museum. One my favorite artists, Gustav Klimit's collection is here. Museum is well laid out. Great book store.

Worth it for Woman In Gold and other exhibits

We were surprised at how much we enjoyed our visit! Seeing Woman in Gold was fantastic, it was so much more beautiful in person. Annoying that you can't take any pictures, however you can take a shot with a WIG replica downstairs by the bathrooms. We really enjoyed seeing the other Klimts, and the gorgeous armor display (I don't know if that is permanent or just visiting). The building was beautiful and I wish we had eaten at the cafe. I understand there is usually a line to eat so plan accordingly.

Visitor-unfriendly museum

The Neue is an “Austrian and German” art museum, but let’s be real: it’s the Klimt “Woman in Gold” painting of Adele Bloch that is the main reason to visit the Neue, and the only reason to pay a steep $25 to see a permanent collection with this masterpiece, a several other impressive Klimts, some Egon Schiele sketches and some jewelry, mantle clocks and ornate table settings. I was fortunate to attend while a special exhibition of items from Museum President and cosmetics billionaire Ron Lauder’s personal collection were on display. These included medieval weapons and suits of armor, Roman statues, German Expressionist works and Casablanca movie memorabilia, and were more interesting than anything from the permanent collection except the Klimts.

Despite paying as much to visit this tiny museum as it costs to visit the mammoth nearby Met and other larger museums, no photos are allowed of ANY works in the collection. No explanation is given for this prohibition, and it also isn’t posted on any signs. Rather, two guards are stationed in every gallery whose primary responsibility appears to be to look for people unknowingly violating the policy taking pictures so they can periodically yell “NO PHOTOS!” Why doesn’t the museum tell visitors about this unusual no photo policy and put up signs instead of doing this gotcha scolding? It is unpleasant to attend a museum where the guards are constantly yelling at a guest who didn’t know the unposted policy, and since the only way to get information about the pieces is a museum phone app, I was constantly taking care to make sure I wasn’t doing anything with the phone app that would look like taking a photo that would get me a scolding, and didn’t enjoy the relentless surveillance of the camera police when most art museums allow photos.

The app itself is pretty good, but only provides substantive information about a handful of works. Many works are hung salon-style or are arranged in cabinets, and laminated gallery guides identify each item by wall/cabinet. Because the information isn’t with the item, I was challenged to look at the guide, then look for the item in a cluttered wall/cabinet with a dozen other pieces.

With the Lauder collection items, there was plenty worth seeing - otherwise this would be a 2-star review. But unless there’s an interesting special exhibition or you just have to see (but not photo) the Klimts, the Neue will be a potentially unpleasant museum experience at an elevated price for what you get.

Spectacular!

What a treasure. Quaint, gorgeous, beautiful! We fell in love w the work of Gustav Klimt while visiting Vienna many years ago. When we learned this gallery houses a large collection of Klimt works (and much, much, more) we decided to visit.

It’s absolutely one of our favorite galleries/ museums ever visited!

We will return, for sure

The museum is in a beautiful building. We froze to death waiting outside. There was even a line for the restaurant (they don't take reservations). I have waited years to visit this museum to see the famous Klimt piece, the Lady In Gold, only to be extremely disappointed to find out you can not take a single photograph (even without flash) in this museum. I have traveled all over the world visiting beautiful museums in Venice, London, Florence, Greece, Vienna, Egypt, Paris, Amsterdam and Rome. Never have I not been allowed to take a single photo. You can even take photos inside all the tombs of ancient Egyptian Kings and Queens. If this painting was still in the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, I could have photographed it there. The only proof you have of ever going to the Neue museum is a photo of the outside, something anyone on the street can walk by and photograph. What an insane policy to have when every major museum in New York City allows for non flash photography. Just so disappointing to wait a life time only to be denied a simple photograph.
