The New York Transit Museum is actually a gallery of a smaller museum in Brooklyn that is interesting. It is a nice way to spend the afternoon before you have to catch a train. It is easy to miss this interesting little museum that is tucked up on the first floor of Grand Central Station.
There was a exhibition going on that day called "Transit Sketches" based on artists perceptions of what travelling on the subways is like from the 1930's to today. It is amazing that not much has changed over the years except for maybe the use of cellphones instead of newspapers. The five artists really captured riding on the New York subway system.
The best part is that the gallery is free and it has a great gift shop. Don't miss this little gem on the first floor of one of the greatest train stations in the world.

The New York Transit Museum's gift shop located off of the main railroad station's concourse currently has a very good collection of artistic subway scene sketches from local artists on display in the temporary space that usually holds the large Lionel trainset during the holidays. Each artist contributed quick sketches and drawings they made while riding the subways & commuter trains (often into Grand Central Terminal). It takes just a few minutes to browse through these; leaving you time to check out the main gift shops many transit-related items.

I enjoyed my visit very much. If you are interested in a museum related to the public transportation, then most certainly you need to do it in the city with the most developed and the best public transportation in North America.
I could feel people who put it together did it with a lot of love for what they do. Everything is authentic (which is not easy to find nowadays), well displayed, easy to navigate, easy to read. I could sit in the old train and imagine being surrounded by passengers from bygone era, the beginning of the 20th Century. Even advertisement boards in subway cars are real too. Very nice.
The museum shop has some very unique items, the selection is better than in their other shop in Grand Central. 10 dollars ticket price is quite reasonable.
There were many families with small kids and strollers. The museum is kids friendly for sure and offers some kids activities.
I highly recommend a visit. 5 very strong stars.

We had visited the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn, and we were happy to see this store in the Grand Central Terminal. We were drawn in by the twinkling lights and the large train garden. It was all about Manhattan. The store offered anything and everything having to do with the transit system here in New York.

This location is an off site shop of the New York Transit Museum. The actual museum is located in downtown Brooklyn. There are displays here from time to time. One of the most popular displays is the holiday train display. It is nice to visit to see the display and pick up a few gifts during the holidays while strolling around Manhattan.

There is not much here in terms of a museum except a few vintage train sets to enjoy, but it’s a small but great place to visit and shop if you’re into trains. I grew up with a Lionel train set, which was the ‘toy of choice’ back in the day, so I always stop in when I’m in NYC to enjoy and check out the displays. But, don’t think that this is a typical museum where you could spend a few hours because it’s not. It’s small, more of a retail store filled with tee shirts and coffee mugs and normally very crowded, so plan for 30 minutes, at best!

Ce musée est vraiment très intéressant. Il raconte de façon ludique toute l’histoire du métro, des bus et tramways à NYC. Il y a beaucoup de documentations, plans, photos, maquettes,... Le quai avec toutes les anciennes rames exposés est le véritable atout du musée permettant de plonger dans le passé. Le New York Transit Muséum convient très bien aux enfants. Il faut compter moins de 20 minutes depuis Time Square si on prend une ligne express pour y aller. La visite est incluse dans le New York Pass.

Le Pass Explorer n'inclut pas ce musée; dommage ... tarifs en fonction de l'âge. On peut faire des photos.. Il y a un bon accueil.
Il faut au moins deux heures voire trois heures pour parcourir le musée car il est très riche en trains, documents... C'est une page d'histoire.
Dommage, j'aurais aimé une animation sonore. Le musée ferme tôt dans l'après-midi ainsi que la boutique . Il faut réserver pour les groupes.
Il y a des ateliers pour les enfants.
