We found free parking a short distance down California St., right below Poli St. The park entrance was located right next the stately City Hall. A short walk up we reached the visitor welcome center and the start of the looping trail. It’s evident from the well-maintained grounds that the nominal $7 admission fee was well worth it. The meandering switchbacks made the ascent less arduous (we bypassed the steeper stone steps). Along the way, informative signages explained certain hillside plants and esoteric vegetation zones. As the path wound uphill, we welcomed the stone benches to rest our feet. At every turn, we were rewarded with a beautiful view of downtown Ventura, the landmark pier, the distant coastline, yonder Channel Islands, and the hazy line demarcating gray sky and water. We were amused by the sponsored interesting quotes carved on rocks along the trail. Although we didn’t reach the Rotary Plaza (a distance of 3/4 mile from start, with no shelter from wind and sun, as planned, the one-mile round-trip nature hike still felt invigorating and rejuvenating. A well-spent two leisurely hours.

So this isn't what you would call your traditional garden, i've read that there was a huge fire which decimated this area along with others surrounding. This is very prevalent once you hike your way to the top of the mountain.
I wouldn't say this is the best garden to come with children to as there aren't any guardrails on the way up. If you dont have a good quality stroller i would also recommend skipping it as the floor is like a sand mixture that eats bad quality stroller wheels alive.. Trust me it was nearly impossible to push up the hill. The views are great from the top, however the only way down is back the way you went up so keep that in mind.

Plenty of free parking available up on the hill
Bathrooms:
bathrooms require a key from the front cashier and are kept clean considering where its located.

$7.00 for Adults and Children are Free
Overall: A nice hike for individuals or couples without kids and a good way to kill an hour or two if you happen to be in Ventura.

Overall disappointing. There’s only a small number of flowers. There’s a nice hike on a good surface but it’s all uphill. There is a great view of the beaches but one can also drive for free for the view.

The Botanic Gardens in June are nothing but brown, dried out plants. It's not worth $7 to hike uphill in the June heat just to see a view that you can see for free from Serra Cross Park.

For my birthday I went for a walk with my daughter and our dogs up the switchback walkway almost to the top of the garden--it is very steep but there are viewpoint benches to take in the spectacular view out over downtown Ventura and out to the west towards the ocean and the Channel Islands (sometimes obscured by fog/clouds).

This botanical garden has always been a really good place for a stroll or hike, and has been greatly improved since most of it was destroyed by the Thomas fire several years ago. The garden has beautiful color in spring, and great views of the ocean. The trail is steep in a few places, but easy for a family hike.

The staff member was very courteous and I enjoyed the aroma of the plants. The incline is not very steep and offers nice views with the ocean breeze. Not a lot of trees so minimal shade.

The Botanical Gardens were heavily damaged by the fires two years ago. But they are doing a great job at restoring the gardens to their glory. I was traveling with a friend who had issues with climbing heights and the paths in the Garden, while relatively flat, traversed up the side of the hills. So we were not able to see everything. But that means a great reason to come back and see it again. I would bet that if we get some good rain fall in the winter, this place would be off the charts for floral displays. I would highly recommend this place.

I love places like this. It’s not the most established botanical garden ever. Far from it. But it is a great place to get some exercise while enjoying beautiful views for miles. We saw some beautiful flowering plants and enjoyed listening to the birds, and seeing bees and butterflies. It really is quite an uphill hike to see the gardens. There is a path or stairs in parts. We saw people with baby strollers, but be prepared for some real effort to climb to the top. Kids are free and we were happy to support the gardens with a fee of $7.00 each for two adults.

Whos idea was it to put a botanic garden on the side of a mountain? I have given this an average mark looking at it as a botanic garden, I understand the garden was destroyed by fire in 2017 so I get it needs recovery but it is not really at the stage yet where it can be visited as a botanic garden, if I didn't know the circumstances (and they are not displayed) I would have marked it as poor. It looks like lots of money has come in and been spent on fancy boulders and name plaques instead of workmanship on the land. It must be a difficult site to work being so steep but it does need some work.
At the moment I would only recommend visiting if you want a hike for a view rather than a botanical experience

I agree with the above answers but you can also explore the trails, both east and west of Brakey Rd. You can even take a trail up to the private property line north of Brakey Rd. and above the shooting range. Some of those trails are pretty steep and not as well maintained as the main trail. When you get to Brakey Rd., make sure to follow the road back to the Cross for a beautiful panoramic view of the city and the avenue area.
Can you take your puppy if they are in a carrier?

Yes, you can take your dog. All I have seen have been on a leash. I would think a carrier would be fine. Don't forget to take a clean up bag. That's just common courtesy.
