The Booksmith is just like it was way back in the 60s when I was a teenager - only better and so much bigger. Lots of Boston and Brookline things to buy

Wonderful independent bookstore in Coolidge Corner of Brookline. Don't have enormous inventory or variety of books, but do have some interesting and hard-to-find books. The basement is for used books. I found the used book prices to be a bit higher than the average prices that I could find elsewhere, but again, the selections are great and interesting. No place to sit down, but if you want to feel what it was like in an old bookstore and smell the books, then this is one of few independent bookstore still operating in Boston area. This is not a cafe, but simply a bookstore. That's what I liked the most.

My favorite book store! Plenty of new books. Helpful staff. Lots of used books in the lower level. Before COVID, they had book authors speak about their latest book, and sign a copy if you bought one. Lots of creative gifts available to purchase too.

It is nice to be able to report on an old fashioned book store that is thriving. This store-in the heart of Coolidge Corner-offers a wide selection of books, and encourages shoppers to browse at their leisure.

One of the very few small book stores still left in Coolidge Corner. An icon that has been a BROOKLINE for so many years. What a pleasure to shop here. They offer a significant variety of books on various subjects. Not as price conscious as buying on the internet but a great advantage seeing and browsing through the books in order to make your selection. If the book you want is not available they can usually order it for you.
Although books are the main focus, they offer gifts for all ages. Love taking my grandkids there to the little table at the back of the store, encouraging them to grow up being excited by reading. Wonderful was to spend some relaxing time browsing on your own, with family and friends. Tourists can find nice little gifts too. A definite must visit.

This place is a local institution. Great selection of books, plus gifts. Love that this place is a female owned business. Location is near the T. They often have guest authors and sometimes events with the Coolidge Corner Theater. A must visit if your in the neighborhood of Coolidge Corner.

The book store has a great selection of books. What I love the most is that you can find some Boston local decors or accessories there. It's a really lovely place for local book lovers and visitors!

You don't find a bookstore like this often anymore!! Great selection staff was great! Bought books I thought I was never going to find again.

This store was known as Paperback Booksmith when I grew up here in the 1960s & 1970s. Since then, it has grown from its single story structure that sold prerecorded music (though no longer,) as well as books & magazines (but never used,) to now having a basement where used books are now sold. I visit it a few times a month as I live here presently. The only competition to this bookstore within walking distance is the local branch of the Public Library.
Its selection of new-condition books is not quite so comprehensive as is found in, say, a Barnes & Noble chain store nor can it be, but this is balanced by a more diverse selection, however chosen, that gives it that quaint indie charm.
It has a disproportionate-sized section of novelty gift items, including numerous refrigerator magnets, Boston souvenirs, odd greeting cards, and pocket-sized puzzles & games, etc.
The Used Book section is large, uncluttered, and NOT cramped (to boot, it doesn’t have any cat dander or urine odor,) unlike the vast majority of used bookstores I’ve visited in several states over the past few decades. Most used books are priced at $0.50 to $1 over half of the original half price. There is also a $1 book section.

If there's space, the most convenient place is a parking lot at the corner of John and Babcock ($1.25/hour). Failing that, and if there's no street parking, you should head for the large parking lot on Centre St.
