I love a transport museum! This is particularly atmospheric because it is housed in a former subway station. I hadn't expected there to be so much to see but I was there nearly 3 hours. The first level has displays about the building of the subway system, about buses and trams, various old ticket machines and turnstiles, and some partial vehicles for kids to "drive". On the lower level - the platform - there are many old trains and carriages lined up along the platform, full of interesting old adverts and information about each type of carriage. I can't help preferring the cosy dark green 1917-era trains to the stainless steel 1970s ones! I particularly liked the old photos on display, taken by 2 brothers who documented the construction of the subway tunnels, but also took photos of the streets before they were dug up - such a great social record of early 20th century New York.

We took our 2 year-old grandson to this underground museum on a Sunday morning. He’s at an age when kids are especially fascinated by trains, subways, and buses. Being able to sit in the make-believe bus driver’s seat and move the big steering wheel really made his day! It’s a very educational two-hour tour for adults as well. We gained a valuable lesson on the history of New York’s mass transit system from the hardship constructing the tunnels over a hundred twenty years ago to the role public transportation played in the city’s development. Vintage photos, along with easy to understand signage, took us back through time, highlighting the progress made. Admission: $5for seniors and child 2-17, $10 for adult; what a deal!

Fantastic, this museum was in an old Subway station. The old carriages are amazing. We also rode the holiday train in December run by these guys, who are knowledgeable and helpful. Would definitely go again.

We were not prepared for all the details in this place! It was AMAZING to see the story of the subway being built by looking at all the photos from the early 1900s. There are examples of all the subway cars that have been in use since it opened. The bus system is also well documented and there are route maps on the walls. There are also examples of how the subway turnstiles have evolved over the years. I can't recommend this place enough!!

I went on my first New York Transit Museum walking tour and it was excellent. Entitled, "Transit Walk: Second Avenue's Art and Transit History" it featured a fascinating history of the old elevated train, the IRT 2nd Ave line, amongst other transit lore. The art walk itself was worth the price of admission as we encountered some lovely mosaics and tiles I would never have been able to find on my own. Our wonderful tour guide Kristin maneuvered us through the city and its subways with ease and wit, sprinkling in historical anecdotes that enhanced it all.. I highly recommend this tour!

Went on a recent Saturday. Parents, grandparents and a 2 yr old. Arrived around 11am and already busy. Lots of kids who just love this place. Very interesting for adults to learn the history of the subways. The kids love going through the subway, train and bus cars. Fun for all ages. Our granddaughter loved it!

This former Old City Hall subway station closed in 1945 which was lavished with wonderful architectural details (yes, chandeliers too). The NYC Transit Museum hosts tours of the abandoned station for members only. Best to go on a bright, sunny day so the area can be illuminated by the ceiling's skylight.

I am so glad I found out about the New York Transit Museum before I visited New York as I was able to make plans to visit and really enjoy what it had to offer!

The museum is located in a former subway station and is just behind Brooklyn Town Hall. As it is a subway station you have to use steps to get down onto the concourse and then down onto the platforms. I did not see any lifts to use.

I received a friendly greeting from the staff. I had booked my ticket online and saved it to my phone so when I arrived they simply scanned the image and I was free to explore.

The museum has an extensive number of images and information about the construction of the subway in Manhattan and the other boroughs. It is very interesting and also humbling to see the conditions the workers had to endure and also how some of them died during the construction of the subway.

In addition to information about the subway there is also displays relating to buses and how they have evolved over the years to the modern buses that are running around the city now. Another display they have is about the different tokens that people used and there is an entertaining collection of fake tokens that were used by dishonest passengers.

By far the most interesting part of the museum for me was the collection of Subway cars from the ages. All of them are in perfect condition and it is easy to imagine them rattling along the tunnels and elevated sections. One of the things that made me chuckle was the original adverts that are still in place on the carriages. People say about the past being a different time. When you look at these adverts it truly makes you realise how different attitudes were in the past.

Of course a visit to a museum is not complete without checking out the gift shop. The gift shop at the Transit Museum is impressive and there are a variety of things to buy depending on your age or wallet. Highly recommended!

Riding the subways is a requirement in NYC! And what better way to learn more about it than the NY Transit Museum? It is a fantastic museum that not only provides the history of the subways but they also have historical cars that you can walk through. In addition to the subway system, you can also learn about the trams, buses, etc. I loved the section about the various tokens and meters used over the years. Did you know they use old train cars as artificial reefs? This is a must-see museum, especially if you have little ones! After visiting, you can take a quick bus ride to DUMBO for a nice meal or snack.

Ok. So my daughter wanted to go here. I was indifferent.

So glad I went!! It amazing to me how the low tech construction of the NYC subway system still functions more than a century later.

They have old train cars to see and the story of the system is really interesting.

It starts with decision to build the system and takes you up to today’s system.
