It's unfortunate that one of Greensboro's most historically preserved buildings is so uninviting. Unfortunately, the influx of homeless has made the station become increasingly uninviting. The bathrooms are for passengers only, and have a coded lock that you have to get from the staff. Unfortunately, there's often no staff at the counter, so you have to wait up to 45 minutes for them to come back and give it to you, and that's only if you have a valid ticket.
Much of the business stalls within the station are now closed with curtained windows, so you can't see inside. It would be nice if the historical society did something with it.
Also, the screen showing train times says it's up to date, but is just an image of all the trains' schedules running on time. Never trust it and always check Amtrak for the actual train schedule.

Where else can you leave your car for 30 days free of charge when traveling on Amtrak? Nowhere ! The depot is well patrolled and no loitering is allowed. This has to be one of Amtrak's best stations. It also has a nice snack bar...albeit a little pricey.

Sadly train travel (at least in this part of the US) is a lost mode of transportation. We enjoy traveling the Eastern corridor via Amtrak. Our travels have taken us to Philadelphia and recently to Northern Virginia. Both times we departed from the Amtrak Greensboro, NC train station. The station was originally built in 1927 as the Greensboro Southern Railway Depot. It is a beautiful building that feels like you are stepping back in time.
Designed by the New York architectural firm of Alfred T. Fellheimer & Steward Wagner, the 1927 Beaux-Arts station features Ionic columns and a three-story arched entry. Inside, the ticketing area has a giant mural displaying the service area of the Southern Railway system in the 1920’s. This station is served by three Amtrak trains: the Crescent, the Carolinian and the Piedmont. It also serves Greensboro Transit Authority and Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation buses and intercity bus companies.

Station was absolutely beautiful . There were plenty of old southern artifacts and paintings on the wall . Piedmont , Carolinian , and Crescent Amtrak service all serve this station .

Located in downtown Greensboro "The Depot" provides bus, taxi and rail connections. We have traveled to Florida and DC on Amtrak - the station's interior has been restored to look like it did in the '40s. The Depot staff are friendly and helpful - there is a nice cafe on premises for those early Amtrak departures as well.

When I arrive at the "Depot" I feel like I am going someplace special! I love the spaciousness of the refurbished building with the prerved 1920's map, marble and tile floors and wooden benches like in the old movies! The Amtrak service on the Piedmont trains is dependable and enjoyable. I ride to Raleigh or Charlotte and always have a good experience.

This former Southern Railway station has been restored to equal or exceed its original 1927 condition. It serves both Amtrak and North Carolina state trains on two different routes as well as some buses. Located an easy walk from downtown Greensboro, it also has a sizable auto parking area. This station is a Greensboro gateway the city can be proud of.

I love this old Southern Railway train depot. I used to use the facility when I was a child and I have always thought it is such a grand place. A must see for history and train buffs!

Built in the 1920s, this 56,000 square feet Beaux Arts style train station is one of the most stately and majestic edifices in Greensboro.
The front of the building boasts a six colonnaded front with Ionic capital columns.
Inside the main waiting area, about eight feet diameter chandeliers suspend from the central hall. Gilded signage on wood paneled walls dot the facilities. There are ample, wooden 42” tall high-backed benches and there is an acoustically controlled waiting area, both of which afford train passengers relative privacy and comfort while waiting.
There are key padded restrooms, which was a disappointment upon arriving at this station, because one wanted to use the restrooms immediately and not wait in a line of four customers to ask for a keypad code to the restroom. However, key padded restrooms turned out to be a huge blessing when leaving this train station because the restrooms were immaculate.
There are escalators to get up to the on average 1000 feet long (.2 miles) of train platforms each, with a corresponding minimum 500 feet long covered area each.
Needless to stay, arriving at this station harkens back to a time when train stations were one of the only and best places to meet and greet visitors and locals. The history plus magnificence of this train station was awe inspiring!
