The historical sites. The square is looking good much better than the run down look it previously had going on. There is a lot of history here and needs preserved.

This bustling square is filled with energy year round including cool holiday events. The square has vibrant restaurants and shops.

We walked around while we waited for the rest of our group for lunch. It's a cute small town square. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day out.

There is lots to do on the Independence Square. For a great place to eat, Square Pizza is the best. Then right across the street enjoy Yorgurtini. Catch a movie, and of course over Labor Day, enjoy Santa-Cali-Gon days. Crafts, rides and great food all around.

Imagine the town square late spring 1840's with a hundred covered wagons lined up with mules and oxen stomping feet, impatient to begin their journey on the Oregon trail. See the statue of our famous Independence native, president Harry S. Truman. complete with hat and walking stick in front of our historic county courthouse, with its' center core built in the 1820's.Enter the courthouse and visit the Visiter's center to shop and pick up brochures, maps, and good information from the friendly Independence Volunteer staff. After you plan your visit, stop by the soda fountain, or visit the Swedish shop, or eat at the German restaurant on the side streets off The Square! On Wed and Saturday mornings, wander down to the Farmer's market at Truman Rd.and then go across the street to the old Fire Station where you can pick up your tickets for Truman's house.

If your heading this way, make a day of it! Visit the near by museums (quite a few), eat lunch and or dinner. There is a place called Up Dog to get a variety of THEMED hotdogs. Stop by Clinton's Soda fountain for ice cream or enjoy a flavored "POLLY'S POP" Soda made right there on the square. Go shopping, even watch a movie. If your visiting from out of town, pick up a souvenir or two. Plan ahead a take a guided tour of the area in a covered wagon with Pioneer Trails. Go any time of year but to REALLY enjoy it plan to visit when the weather is perfect for walking, exercise is an added bonus. You can stop by your local Mid Continent Library and check out their FREE museum pass for several museums in the area-good for one museum and 2 people. If you go during the Christmas Holiday you just might hear some carolers and see an old fashioned Holiday WINDOW DISPLAY like the movies. Most often when you travel out of town and stop by the Historic downtown areas or squares the area might be DEAD...not this one! If this sounds like your kind of day, I think this is one stop you WON'T be disappointed in, ESPECIALLY if you enjoy and or interested in learning and hearing about President Harry S. Truman and his life before, duing and after his presidentcy.

During Santa-Cali-Gon Days Festival, Mrs. Palmer gave us the oral history of the Courthouse, Mercantile Store, Harry Truman's Temporary office and (shhhh Brothel). My friend has lived in Independence for 56 years and I live in Happy Rock (Gladstone) both of us learned so much about 'Life': From the French Leave of the creative and talented Sam Shepherd to the short-sightedness of Bess Truman painted over the Black Walnut Walls. Excellent and a Delight to 'pop in' for a bit of History.

The Independence Square is full of unique restaurants and shops. We got to see it in a unique way in July . . . from a wagon ride. We learned a lot of history we'd been unaware of up to that point. Things look much differently from a new perspective.

It really is a square- businesses all around the perimeter. RV parking might present a challenge, depending on what day you are there.
