These spires of the rock formations and just beautiful! It is very exciting to see them along the way. I was here as a teenager and couldn't wait to come back!

Excellent beautiful hike. Recommend good shoes and consider hiking poles--long section of rocky climb.

This was one of our two favorite hikes at Custer State Park, along with the hike up to Black Elk Peak. It’s about 1.9 miles out and back with 488 feet of elevation gain. It’s really not that difficult of a hike; there are a few places where you do have to climb up some rocks in the trail, but there are plenty of footholds and it’s almost like climbing stairs. The trail itself is beautiful and lush, with a little bit of fall color starting at this time of year, and of course the spires around you.
There are parking spaces near the trailhead, at a hairpin curve along Needles Highway, but it does fill up here. If you arrive in the afternoon, finding a parking space is really going to be a matter of luck.
You can combine this trail with the hike up to Black Elk Peak. The end of Cathedral Spires trail is about 1/3 of the way up to Black Elk Peak, so if you have time, consider continuing your hike for another couple of miles.

If you can find a parking space (come early or late in the day) this is a great hike. It starts our very easy, and gets rocky near the end, but if you don't want to do this last part, it is still a great hike. Family friendly.

This was such a pretty spot and not hard hiking. I would definitely do it again and the photography was incredible.

Beautiful safe trail. Do not miss this trail although the up can be moderately steep, the climb is worth the work. I am also afraid of cliffs and heights, yet this trail let the whole family have beautiful fun together. Wear hiking tennis shoes at least, even children.

The needles highway is a gorgeous area and this is probably the best shorter hike. It starts from one of the pullouts along the highway.

Cathedral Spires Trail is a great hike! It's approximately 1.5 miles one-way, and generally considered moderately challenging due to some rocky elevation rise through the middle section. The first part goes up thorugh a wooded valley. At the top you turn into an expansive, open valley surrounded by the large, needle-like rock formations that give the trail its name. It's beautiful. I highly recommend hiking Cathedral Spires Trail!

Strenuous but beautiful hike! About 3 miles total, there and back. Go early in the morning to beat the crowds and enjoy some shade. We were rewarded with mama and baby mountain goats at the top!

We'd like to visit Wind Cave and Custer State Park on the same day. If we got to the trail head lot in the afternoon, are we likely to find a spot? Is there an alternative parking spot or trail head you would recommend to get to the spires? We are coming the last week of July 2021.

We found a spot easily, but we were not there during peak season as you will be.

I am assuming that the trails are marked by #? so we would be able to know by signage the trails you have recommended or we will need a map?

You will need a map. The trails are all called by names on signage on the roadside. But at each trail head or in some free publications there will be a map with the trail names and the number. They will usually tell you the length of the trail as well as the difficulty of the hike.

I know in Yellowstone bears are an issue - are they on Cathedral Spires trail?

We have traveled to the Black Hills many times and have never heard of bears being present or warned about. There are some isolated reports of black bears wandering into the area but those have been rare. We hike throughout the area without fear of bears.

If you are not a strong hiker but want to see some great views, can you go part way on the Cathedral Spires trail and still see? How long does it take to do the whole trail and return (figuring a moderate/slow pace)? Thanks :}

The trail starts out without a lot of elevation change. That takes you to the base of some of the spires. From there the trail makes a short but steeper climb and then flattens out again as you head around the back of the spires. If you are short on time or not a strong of a hiker the doing the first part is quick and easy. The whole trail took about two hours to hike taking our time.
