This was a real challenge. We definitely started too late in the afternoon and with dark clouds up ahead. (I trusted my wife's weather instinct, but should not have in this case). We started the trail going counter clockwise. Completed about 1/4 of the look when lightning started (stupid us!). Made haste back the way we came. I would definnitely try it again some day but would suggest going clockwise. Going down the first long long section even with steel railings was very challenging!

This is a great loop hike. We did it counter clockwise so we had the steep part going down. There are handrails on the really uneven terrain to make it easier. Be prepared for a good bit of steep trail with large rocks to navigate. Not hard, but worth noting. It is a very beautiful trail which runs along the creek for a good portion. Recommended!!!!

We only hiked a portion of Sunday Gulch Trail, and it was very cool. We started with the Sylvan Lake Trail and followed it clockwise from the parking lot. When we met the Sunday Gulch Trail we followed it counterclockwise for approximately a mile down the rocky gulch and back. There are stairs and handrails, but you are mostly scrambling across large rocks or stepping across the stream. It can be slippery. There are some waterfalls and grottos along the trail. We got to the bottom of the descent then returned up the gulch to Sylvan Lake. That part was a bit strenuous, but not too bad. I highly recommend hiking Sunday Gulch Trail. Go counterclockwise if you want to descend through the gulch first rather than have to climb it at the end.

What a beautiful way to commune with nature. This hike takes one deep into the canyon and along the canyon floor as you descend among the spires and rocks.

We hiked this trail going counter-clockwise, that way you do the hard part at the beginning when your legs are still strong, and go down in the hard areas. When we did it, it was wet and there was some ice in the trail, so be extra careful. The trail in itself is great, not your typical trail, lots of rock scrambling, and at the end great views of the canyon. We are in our 60s and were able to do it this way.

We hiked early on a Sunday morning and went counterclockwise going down the boulders. This seemed much easier than climbing up at the end and we were facing beautiful views and colorful trees on the way down.
We were the only hikers on the trail for the first half, then met a moderate number of people coming from the other direction.
We had grippy hiking shoes and enjoyed the iron rails sections very much. The views and trees were spectacular in the fall. As we got closer to the end we were in view of Needles highway and the rocky views. It seemed like a more gradual incline going up that way. One of our favorite hikes!

This is a must must must. Loved this hike. It was hard and exhausting and beautiful Please do this if you go to Custer.

This is a moderate to challenging trail (some very steep and slick areas but with handholds provided) We had heard clockwise was the best way to tackle the loop and I definitely agree with that. One of the best short hikes I've been on.

Great trail. Did it with a 5 and 7 year old. Some parts were tricky and we started counter-clockwise. If I were to do it again I would start clockwise as I feel the rock scrambling and boulders are the main attraction on this. Great hike though

This has to be one of the best hikes my family and I have done. We did the hike counter clockwise and my kids loved hiking down over the huge boulders. We have older kids but as others have said I would not advise this hike for young ones. This hike takes a few hours but it was so well worth it. Be prepared for possible rain. It started to pour about half way through the hike and rained the entire latter half of our hike. We were soaked by the end. There was no indication of rain in the forecast. This hike has amazing views and is so worth it if you are in the area.
