Well worth the visit. Completely free. Found the home well preserved and moving. Rangers were helpful. Gift shop folks were also fun.

First of all, let me just say the Rangers at this location were AWESOME! Met three of the four and each one was engaging:) My wife can’t walk far due to using a cane, they drove her up the hill to the home😳 Park is well taken care of:) Nice little gift shop:) Easy parking:) Easy exit location to parking lot:) Lived the home and history:)

What a perfect stop driving from Napa/Sonoma Valleys to San Francisco! We were driving to Danville and decided to visit the estate of John Muir, the man who contributed so much to preservation of our gorgeous National Parks.

His mansion is wonderfully preserved, the premises are vast and meticulously maintained… the plants that John Muir was growing are well marked, the flowers are in full bloom, the alleys are lovely…

We were so lucky to find such an interesting stopover on our way to the Silicon Valley.

Wonderful... friendly staff and rangers, wonderful place to walk around and easy access and parking. Can't beat it really. Interesting to see both the homes on the property even though only Mr. Muir's is accessible. But, the self tour is very interesting to see the home and the lifestyle vs his views on nature. The home was quite interesting loved the open circular flow of the first floor and imagine being a kid with the cool bell tower and various orchards to learn from. Definitely worth the visit.

We were staying with friends in the area and when they mentioned that John Muir had a house, turned National Historical Site, I was thrilled. I just love John Muir and everything he stood for. This place was so much more than I thought. It’s a huge beautiful old home that used to belong to his wife’s family. It has plenty of Muir memorabilia including his “scribble” room, where he would sit at his desk and write or sketch. The paintings on the walls are copies of the originals, but mostly all of Yosemite. Don’t miss the attic, very clean and large. Here you can see the mammoth cistern that gave them running water at the turn of the century. Then climb up to see the views from the bell tower and ring the bell on the way down. There is no fee to enter and the locals know when to come by and get free fruit. You can take a self guided tour of what’s left of the grounds using your phone. There is even a giant redwood tree that John Muir brought to the property as a sapling. It’s a shame that it sits on a busy intersection now, but with a little imagination, you can see how peaceful it would have been to live and work there.

The best time to visit is March or April when the fruit trees in the small orchard next to the beautiful Victorian home are in bloom.

We had relatives visiting so we all visited the Muir National Park for an outing, took a docent tour. Very interesting, learned and saw a lot.We didn't know John Muir had this ranch and raised his daughters here. It's a large Victorian-style home, decorated in its original decor. A month later we hiked nearby Mt. Wanda, which Muir named after one of his daughters.

Unfortuantely, I didn't have enough time to see everything I wanted to see. The Park Rangers knew so much about John Muir, his family and friends as well as the sites to be visited at the Site. As a Sierra Club member I am indebted to John Muir. As someone who loves nature, John Muir has helped shape my views of natural beauties. I will be going back to to learn more and to visit Mt. Wanda and the John Muir family gravesite.
